Minneapolis MN - August 2008

On the eve of the RNC, The Liberty Parade, a celebration of liberty and the freedom of expression, wove its way through the streets of downtown Minneapolis. The peaceful parade (organized by several local arts, liberal, and conservative groups) ended at Loring Park with a live concert and several speakers.

Counter-protest to the far right targeting asylum seeker accommodation in Rotherham

The far right has crawled out from under its stone and is targeting asylum seeker accommodation; a police van was set on fire in Liverpool by these extremists last week.

Around 50 far-right extremists targeted a hotel which is being used to house asylum seekers in Rotherham today; they were countered by 100’s of anti-fascist protesters. The day was peaceful and the anti-fascist protest was well organised and good humoured. A heavy police presence kept the far right confined to a roundabout well away from the hostel, though a handful managed to get close; police kept the two groups apart.

Protest the Hero is a Canadian progressive metal band from Whitby, Ontario.[3] Originally named Happy Go Lucky,[4] the band changed their name to Protest the Hero shortly before releasing their debut EP, Search for the Truth, in 2002. In 2005, the band released their first full-length album Kezia on the indie label Underground Operations.

On January 23, 2006, the band signed with Vagrant Records for Kezia's American release on April 4, 2006. Their second full-length album, Fortress was released by Underground Operations in Canada and by Vagrant Records worldwide on January 29, 2008.[5] The band released their third studio album, Scurrilous, on March 22, 2011.

Expressing frustrations with record labels, in January of 2013 the band announced that they would crowdfund their fourth full-length album.[6] The Indiegogo campaign was a runaway success, and the independently-released Volition debuted on October 29, 2013, distributed with the help of Razor & Tie.

This afternoon I decided to go out and take some photos. Just as I was about to ride out of the city, I looked behind me and saw a large group of people protesting about something. I decided to abandon my initial project for the day and follow the group instead.

From the pamphlets being distributed by the protesters, and word of mouth, I determined that this was essentially a protest about an eviction. There is a house in the centre of Leiden that, for the past 40 years, has been occupied by squatters. During the 40 years they have been there, the building became somewhat of a cultural centre. Just recently, the local Council decided to evict them: and today they peacefully expressed their objection to the Council's proposal.

I started following the protest from the intersection of the Hooigracht and Nieuwe Rijn, and followed them down Nieuwe Rijn to the Herengracht. From the Herengracht, they turned left along Oude Rijn and into the Haarlemmerstraat. From the Haarlemmerstraat, they travelled up to the Prinsessekade and onto the Breestraat. While travelling down the Breestraat, they stopped and made a point outside the Town Hall, before making their way back to Hooglandse Kerkgracht and the building in question.

This gentlemen led the protest through the city. Dressed in a bright green safety vest, wearing aviator sunglasses and a warm hat, and blowing a whistle, he could not be lost in the crowd!

Needless to say, I'm glad that I charged my camera and decided to head out... otherwise I would have missed this completely!

Comments are, of course, welcomed!

Anti government supporters are trying to occupy / invade ministries around Bangkok and Nonthaburi in order to stop the government functioning. This is the second time the protestors have been to the ministry in question, this time being a weekend the crowds were much bigger.
