Annual protest in Hebron for the reopening of Shuhada Street (aparthied street). Shuhada Street lies at the centre of the ancient city of Hebron. For many years it was a busy shopping precinct, full of life. Today it is deserted. When the radical Israeli settler Baruch Goldstein shot dead 29 Palestinian worshippers at Hebron's Ibrahimi mosque in 1994, the Israeli army feared reprisals against three nearby Israeli settlements. It closed off the street to Palestinian vehicles and later Shuhada Street was blocked even for most Palestinian pedestrians.Most of the people who once lived here have left their homes. All the shops have closed, and Palestinians living in the area have to climb over roofs to reach their neighbours. In addition, they suffer violence and harrassment by settlers and soldiers, who often neglect to intervene to protect them from settler violence.

The whole scene started winding down around Maghrib time, as those who chose to move towards the embassy went back to the peaceful protests that were being held at the main Square (in front of the Umar Makram masjid).

A Organização das Nações Unidas (ONU) descreveu a situação no norte do Sri Lanka como um "banho de sangue" depois da divulgação de informações de muitas mortes entre civis durante o final de semana.
No domingo, um médico que trabalha na zona de guerra afirmou à BBC que pelo menos 378 pessoas foram mortas vítimas de bombardeios lançados pelo exército do Sri Lanka.
O porta-voz da ONU na capital Colombo, Gordon Weiss, afirmou que mais de 100 crianças morreram durante a "matança de civis em larga escala".
"A matança de civis em larga escala durante o final de semana, incluindo a morte de 100 crianças, mostra que o cenário de banho de sangue se transformou em realidade", afirmou.
Feridos e corpos
O médico que está na zona de guerra disse à BBC no domingo que, além dos 378 mortos, outras 1.122 pessoas ficaram feridas nos bombardeios. E mais corpos estão nas praias e perto das estradas da região.
Segundo o médico, armamentos pesados parecem ter sido disparados do território controlado pelo governo contra uma área ocupada principalmente por civis, mas controlada pelo grupo rebelde separatista Tigres de Libertação da Pátria Tâmil (LTTE, na sigla em inglês).
O exército negou que tenha bombardeado a chamada "zona segura" para civis e acrescentou que os rebeldes foram os autores dos disparos.
Os rebeldes e o exército do Sri Lanka acusam-se mutuamente de atrocidades cometidas na guerra civil, que se agravou no mês passado.Não é possível verificar as acusações, pois jornalistas estão proibidos de entrar na região.
A ONU, por sua vez, estima que cerca de 50 mil civis estão presos em uma faixa de 3 km² de terra, devido ao conflito.
O porta-voz da ONU Gordon Weiss afirmou que os dois lados, governo e rebeldes, são responsáveis pelo bem-estar de civis em áreas de seu controle, de acordo com as leis internacionais de guerra e leis internacionais humanitárias.
"Isto é exatamente o que o secretário-geral (Ban Ki-moon) tem falado. Na semana passada ele afirmou que o mundo está observando. E a razão de o mundo estar observando é que, a não ser que os Tigres Tâmeis deixem estas pessoas saírem ou se houver contenção, então é inevitável que vejamos o tipo de acontecimento que vimos durante o final de semana", afirmou.
Um porta-voz militar do grupo rebelde Tigres de Libertação da Pátria Tâmil, conhecido como Ilanthirayan, teria sido gravemente ferido durante os confrontos, segundo o site TamilNet, que apoia os rebeldes.
Segundo o Ministério da Defesa do Sri Lanka, o porta-voz ferido também era parte importante dos quadros militares do grupo rebelde.
O ministério afirmou que o segundo na escala de comando do braço marítimo do grupo separatista rebelde, identificado apenas como Cheliyan, foi morto na semana passada.
