Thousands of protesters marched through downtown Chicago on Sunday in one of the city's largest demonstrations in years, airing grievances about war, climate change and a wide range of other complaints as world leaders assembled for a NATO summit.
The protest, which for months had stirred worries about violence in the streets, drew together a broad assortment of participants, including peace activists joining with war veterans and people more focused on economic inequality.
Hundreds of protesters gathered late Sunday night near the Art Institute of Chicago as first lady Michelle Obama hosted a dinner for spouses of NATO leaders inside. At least 100 Chicago police officers in riot gear were also at the scene.

A crowd protests against the Israeli state outside the Opéra National de Paris, Nov. 18, 2012. Israel and Palestine-based Hamas have been exchanging rocket fire since Wednesday. It has killed 100 Palestinians, including 53 civilians, and wounded some 840 people, including 225 children, Gaza heath official Ashraf al-Kidra said.
On the Israeli side, three civilians have died from Palestinian rocket fire and dozens have been wounded. A rocket-defense system has intercepted hundreds of rockets bound for populated areas.
This white-painted bicycle was chained to a signpost in Midtown at a corner along Sixth Avenue (I can't remember the number of the side street). It looked like a memorial to a cyclist killed by a car, and it may have been, but there was also a sign placed right above it mentioning something about Rockefeller and the middle class; it seemed to be making some kind of socioeconomic statement.

Justin Anderson, of the Bahai faith, will be on a hunger strike at Bulding 1, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily: 121 SW Salmon Street, at the corner of Second Avenue. He told me that without food, he is only filled by the love of those who stop by or sit with him in support.

Two protesters debate with police about whether they're allowed to have the yellow and black panel they brought into the park. Police eventually decided they were allowed to keep it. Under the new park rules, large backpacks, sleeping bags, tents, and tarps are not allowed. Other large items appear to be a grey area for now.

For many years it was a busy shopping precinct, full of life. Today it is deserted. When the radical Israeli settler Baruch Goldstein shot dead 29 Palestinian worshippers at Hebron's Ibrahimi mosque in 1994, the Israeli army feared reprisals against three nearby Israeli settlements. It closed off the street to Palestinian vehicles and later Shuhada Street was blocked even for most Palestinian pedestrians.Most of the people who once lived here have left their homes. All the shops have closed, and Palestinians living in the area have to climb over roofs to reach their neighbours. In addition, they suffer violence and harrassment by settlers and soldiers, who often neglect to intervene to protect them from settler violence.

The event landed on the day Michigan's medical marijuana law went into effect. The law was passed by voters with 63 percent of the vote last November, and Michigan Department of Community Health offices will be open to accept applications. Medical marijuana patients will be able to go through a registration process and obtain a state ID card.

“The lead-up to Saturday’s protests against the TPPA shows the commitment of people across the country to send a message that the government can’t ignore”, said ItsOurFuture spokesperson Edward Miller.
A video shows young activists publicising Saturday’s nationwide protests with footage from Auckland, Wellington, Dunedin, Christchurch, and Nelson.
Action in the 22 centres starts at 10am in Raglan and many of the larger centre marches begin at 1pm, including Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.
“People have been incredibly creative”, Miller said. “In Christchurch a giant plain-packaged cigarette packet will be marching in the crowd, while Auckland will be led by an enormous Trojan Horse, locked in a tug-of-war between major commercial interests and activist communities.”
