The English Defence League on a protest march in Blackpool on the 28th May 2011.
This photograph was taken as the protesters left the starting point on the promenade at Blackpool outside Yates's. The official word from the police is that they were not expecting trouble but never the less, there was a massive police presence.
Reports were that there was only 10 arrests through the day, put I personally witnessed 5 of them outside Yates's and a further arrest later on in the afternoon on Lythem Road, not far from Witherspoons.
Alcohol was blamed for the majority of the arrests (drunk & disorderly) which brings into question the wisdom to allow the official meeting point for a protest group that has a history of violent encounters with the people that are against the EDL ethos, to be a Pub, not only that, to allow the pub to serve them alcohol at 10am?
Hundreds of University of Alberta students and staff marched to the Alberta Legislature to protest cuts to the Advanced Education budget.
queer-interventionalism at it's best - one of the only times i saw a cop crack a smile. what does it take?!?
A lot of the people at the protest spend the entire day in Harvard Square, though the actual protest begins in the evening. It is cold, windy and while it is raising awareness I do not know how much it is accomplishing beyond that yet.
I'm told that sometimes, friends pick up their children and bring them to the protest in the afternoon and the kids get to spend the rest of the day until 8pm in the square. So amongst the solemn chants, and the cars honking for Free Tibet, there are little kids voices playing tag. It isn't uncommon to see people holding banners in one hand and toys in the other and hear people asking around for their kids.

While everyone will have their own opinions on the purpose of the protest it was good to see democracy at its best; a peaceful protest.

On 21st October 2011, English PEN took part in a global 'Poetry Protest'. Campaigners around the world read poems by Burma's imprisoned poets. In London, at the Burmese Embassy in Mayfair, acclaimed poet Ruth Padel led the readings with Burmese artist Htein Lin, former political prisoner Zaw Zaw Aung, and Salil Tripathi, Chair of English PEN's Writers in Prison Committee.

This was a random portrait I shot of a protestor during the 'Occupy the Octagon' event. I unfortunately forgot this man's name but he had a wonderful mask on and didn't seem at all to mind waiting while I set up my 4x5 camera.
The image was shot on a Horseman LE monorail camera. The film was Tmax 100 developed in Ilford LC29 and scanned in Photoshop CS3.

Tamil protesters have been demonstrating for several weeks on the green outside Parliament in London against the continuing violence in Sri Lanka. On several occasions they have blocked nearby streets. At 10.30 on the 11th May about 500 demonstrators occupied nearby streets, soon after midday the demonstrators numbered about 1500. The Police were still trying to clear all the streets late in the evening.
Parliament's Gates were closed for much of the day to prevent protesters getting access.

I was stunned, overwhelmed, and astonished by the protest at Shahbag. Within minutes I was engulfed by the spirit, energy, and excitement of the crowd there, immediately drawn in the public's desire to get "proper" justice. The environment was phenomenal--there were people from all backgrounds, ages, and religions--and the air was electric with the slogans, optimism, and hopefulness of the crowd.
The country has finally united against an enemy that has burdened it with corruption and hatred even before it was born.

On November 5th, 2008, Proposition 8 was passed by California voters by a margin of 52.5% vs 47.5%. Following the passing of the proposition, many California counties have stopped issuing marriage licenses to same sex couples. As a result wide-spread protests have been documented across the state - San Francisco experiencing one of the largest on November 7th, 2008 as protesters took to the street.
