Carol Mooney, a Navy Oceanographic mathjematician, hands a flyer to a Washington Daily News employee September 30, 1969 protesting sexual discrimination in classified ads published in the newspaper.

The three remaining Washington, D.C. daily newspapers—The Post, The Star and the Daily News—all segregated classified ads by sex advertising “Help Men,” “Help Women,” and “Help Men and Women.”

The practice remained a target a women’s advocacy groups attempting to halt discrimination in employment until June 1971 when the D.C. human relations commission reached an agreement with the three newspapers to end the practice.

The Swedish Democrats held a political rally in Handen today. As per usual there was also a street protest by a few left wing parties, including the Socialist Justice Party. Fifteen police vehicles and fifty police officers surrounded Poseidon's Square during the rally. I decided to stay and document the event.

June 22, 1996. A dozen members of a self-anointed and unwelcome KKK group came to Ann Arbor to hold a thumb-in-your-eye rally at City Hall. A protest group, the National Women's Rights Organizations Coalition (NWROC) formed to oppose them. After the rage had been mounting for awhile, this simpleminded redneck wandered up, wearing a Confederate-flag T-shirt and drinking a bottle of Lipton tea. The crowd tore off after him, he fell, and the mob pounced, striking for blood. Keshia Thomas, horrified, threw herself over him to stave off the angry blows. Moments earlier, Thomas, 18, had been in the NWROC group, shouting at the KKK. It was a heroic and passionate moment in a crazy afternoon, well captured in these photographs.

In a story in People Magazine, Thomas was quoted as saying, "You don't beat a man up because he doesn't believe the same things you do. He's still somebody's child."

European Central Bank Protests. Getting ready for 10,000 protesters.

So this was one of three protests that was going on during my walk three blocks to pick up lunch. At one point two of the protests met on the street and one had to wait for the other to turn before they could continue.

They are very interesting to watch (and hear from the office where I work) as they use firecrackers and drums to make as much noise as possible to draw attention to their cause. I am not sure what this one was protesting, but it is a daily occurence on this street.

The protest took place outside the drive up entrance to Swissotel on East Wacker Drive in downtown Chicago. Heartland Alliance was holding its big annual gala dinner there.

The protesters say that Heartland is profiting off the incarceration of immigrant children. They say that these places are nothing but detention camps that are "ill equipped to handle the needs of immigrant children".These facilities are staffed by non-professionals. Anxiety and thoughts of suicide run high among the children. There are widespread allegations of physical and sexual abuse.

They say that Heartland Alliance is "in cahoots with big money". By the government proclaiming that certain people are illegal private industry - meaning places like Heartland - are making a profit off incarcerating these children.

For its part, Heartland, on its website, invites interested people to "Join us to protect the rights and dignity of immigrants and asylum seekers, and that Heartland "strongly oppose the actions of the current administration".

August 22, 2011. Protesters organized by "Anonymous" marched against the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) in downtown SF, causing the train stations to shut down temporarily. The protestors went up and down Market Street, followed closely by police in riot gear. 45 people were eventually arrested.

Reasons for the protest: shooting by Bart police and the subsequent shut-off of cell-phone use on August 11th (by Bart to avoid coordination efforts within the stations).
