The frightful protector is the figure on the right. It is a description that might also be applied to China! Opposition to the Chinese occupation of Tibet and their ongoing campaign to make the Tibetans fully part of China, is still going strong more than fifty years after the Chinese invasion. That opposition tends to be centred on the monasteries, which is why the Chinese keep such tight control of what goes on in the monasteries.
As recently as 2008 there was a report that "12 monks of Dingri Shelkar Choedhe Monastery had been arrested for opposing the “Patriotic re-education” campaign."
Apparently the Chinese security forces raided the monastery at night. This followed an attempt by the Chinese authorities re-launch and reinvigorated the “Patriotic re-education” campaign. A Chinese “work team” visit to Shelkar Gompa, to conduct the “Patriotic re-education” campaign, resulted in a bitter and heated argument between the monks and the Chinese “work team”. A member of the monastery's management committee stood up and told the Chinese that he could not denounce the Dalai Lama, as required under the campaign. Another eleven monks then stood up in support, adamantly opposing the campaign in unison.
But you don't often opposed the Chinese and get away with it. After the incident, entry to the monastery was closed and the monks were prevented from leaving the monastery. Cell phones were confiscated in an attempt at preventing reports of the incident from reaching to the outside world.
Yesterday, Sunday 29 September, saw Greater Manchester Police working to allow two major protests to take place while ensuring the rest of the city could carry on as normal.
The protests were timed to coincide with the Conservative Party Conference which is currently taking place in the city.
