Another view of the Rio Coura valley, this time from the bottom. Although agriculture was the main activity in Paredes de Coura until the middle of the 20th century, the fields have gradually been abandoned due to rural exodus.

Vineyards near Criação Velha.
One or two vines only are precariously planted in minimal soil volumes contained in fractures of an old pahoehoe lava flow.
Overlying lava flows, jointed, weathered and broken up into subrounded boulders, provided the basalt blocks for the construction of protective walls (paredes, murinhos). All walls are assembled without mortar.
Heavier, higher walls delimit the vineyards from the outside, smaller walls subdivide the inside.
Short transverse walls (travesses) leave small openings (bocainas) to allow access from one square (curral) to the next.
As airflow through these permeable walls is being constricted, it condenses and deposits its moisture content, thus helping the vines.
The extensive overall vineyard is subdivided by access roads (canadas) into smaller parts (jarrões).
Crescent-shaped flow structures are still visible on the barren surface of the "ropy" old lava flow. At the time the first colonizers arrived 500 years ago, this landscape resembled a "misterio" (rough blocky old lava field) with only low shrubby vegetation.

The mountain was named according to three stone blocks with small dishes near the peak, which look like thrones.
Legend says, that the Kings of Bavaria, Austria and Bohemia discussed here the line of the state borders.
A view of the River Coura valley and many of the small villages of the Paredes de Coura municipality. In this area, the Autumn colors of the forests are usually caused by oaks (Quercus robur and Quercus pyrenaica).

Das Europa-Reservat Kühkopf-Knoblochsaue im Kreis Groß-Gerau ist das größte Naturschutzgebiet in Hessen.
Teile des 2.440 Hektar großen Gebiets wurden bei der Rheinregulierung 1828/1829 vom Hauptstrom getrennt.
Die besondere ökologische Bedeutung wurde bereits vor über 50 Jahren erkannt und das Gebiet am 20. März 1952 unter Naturschutz gestellt. Mittlerweile trägt es das UNESCO-Prädikat „Europareservat“ und ist durch die Fauna-Flora-Habitat-Richtlinie der Europäischen Union zusätzlich geschützt.
Die ausgedehnten Sumpfgebiete in der Auenlandschaft mit Gras-, Schilf- und Hartholzgewächsen bieten einen Rast- und Brutplatz für zahlreiche Vogelarten. Ein Dammbruch von 1983 wurde nicht behoben, die Landwirtschaft wurde aufgegeben und die Flächen sind regelmäßigen Überflutungen des Rheins ausgesetzt.
