On another face of the butte, for all its grandeur, this lone rock is the one thing that stands out. It's the protagonist of this scene.
Pinocchio, is a fictional character and the protagonist of the children's novel The Adventures of Pinocchio (1883) by Italian writer Carlo Collodi.
Carved by a woodcarver named Geppetto in a village near Lucca, he was created as a wooden puppet but dreamed of becoming a real boy.
He lies often. Pinocchio is a cultural icon.
As one of the most reimagined characters in children's literature, his story has been adapted into other media, notably the 1940 Disney film Pinocchio.

For my sunrise in Óbidos I chose a composition where its imposing castle was the main protagonist. This medieval structure is still connected to the walls of the town. At the time of the Muslim invasion (8th to 11th century) a castle already existed in this location, but it was in the 12th century with the Christian reconquest of Portugal when the fortress was expanded and became even more important. The current structure is due to the expansion carried out by King Dom Dinis a century later. In the 50s of the 20th century, the castle was quite deteriorated after years of abandonment, which is why the Portuguese government decided to restore it and turn it into a luxurious hotel (these hotel establishments in historical buildings are known in Portuguese with the name of "Pousada").
The esplanade in front of the castle is occupied during many times of the year by different structures that are used for the interesting festivals that take place in Óbidos, but which are a problem if you want to photograph the city without annoying additions. During our visit I checked in advance that there was no festival, in addition to finding my composition the day before this sunrise. The lighting of the castle and the walls was quite uneven, with strong orange light on the left side, even more intense white light on the right side and the walls where I was partially without any light (so I had to illuminate them with my own flashlight). In the post processing I have balanced all those light sources, and this time I have decided to keep the sky completely covered by clouds without texture to focus all the attention on the castle, and give all importance to this sentinel, which for centuries protected its occupants during the dark nights of past times.

Para mi amanecer en Óbidos reservé una composición donde su imponente castillo fuera el principal protagonista. Esta estructura medieval está todavía conectada con las murallas de la villa. En época de la invasión musulmana (siglos VIII al XI) ya existía en esta localización un castillo, pero fue ya en el siglo XII con la reconquista cristiana de Portugal cuando la fortaleza se amplió y adquirió aún más importancia. La actual estructura se debe a la ampliación realizada por el rey Dom Dinis un siglo más tarde. En la década de los años 50 del siglo XX, el castillo se encontraba bastante deteriorado tras años de abandono, razón por la cual el gobierno portugués decidió restaurarlo y convertirlo en un lujoso hotel (estos establecimientos hoteleros en edificios históricos se conocen en portugués con el nombre de "Pousada").
La explanada frente al castillo se ve ocupada durante muchas épocas del año por diferentes estructuras que se utilizan para los interesantes festivales que tienen lugar en Óbidos, pero que son un problema si se quiere fotografiar la ciudad sin añadidos molestos. Durante nuestra visita me aseguré que no hubiera ningún festival, además de comprobar mi composición el día anterior a este amanecer. La iluminación del castillo y las murallas era bastante desigual, con fuerte luz anaranjada en el lado izquierdo, aún más intensa luz blanca en la parte derecha y las murallas donde me encontraba parcialmente sin luz alguna (por lo que tuve que iluminarlas con mi propia linterna). En el procesado he equilibrado todas esas fuentes de luz, y en esta ocasión he decidido conservar el cielo totalmente cubierto por nubes sin textura para concentrar toda la atención en el castillo, y darle toda la importancia a este centinela, que durante siglos protegió a sus ocupantes durante las oscuras noches de tiempos pasados.

The Théâtre Marigny is located on the Avenue des Champs Élysées in the direct neighbourhood of the garden of the Élysée Palace in the 8th arrondissement. The theatre was the location for the final fight in which Cary Grant rescues Audrey Hepburn from the villain Walter Matthau.

Das Théâtre Marigny liegt an der Avenue des Champs Élysées in direkter Nachbarschaft zum Garten des Élysée-Palastes im 8. Arrondissement. Das Theater war der Drehort des Schlusskampfes, in dem Cary Grant Audrey Hepburn vor dem Bösewicht Walter Matthau rettet.

What is Dada?

The two made photographs I have uploaded today belong together inextricably. Their themes are connected. In the previous one I discussed the novelist Willa Cather's protagonist Professor Godfrey St Peter, and linked this to the idea that Western civilisation was in decline (Oswald Spengler).
Anyone observant of current trends around the world cannot miss the significance of what is happening to our cultures. There is so much going on at so many levels, and on so many fronts that it is dizzying in its perspective. I'll just mention two major trends:
(1) Cancel Culture: Whereas our Western democracies have always prided themselves on the basic freedoms (speech, religion, the right of assembly), it appears now that what you say, believe and with whom you associate determines whether you are "in" or "out". Fall foul of the tech giants these days and it's social media purgatory for you. The same people who exclaim we need more "difference" in society are the same ones calling for social and moral conformity. This is a sign of the times. A Thomas Jefferson Statue is torn down in NYC. But they'll donate to the Taliban!

(2) Rioting and the destruction of Statues: There's nothing particularly new here. Art has always been attacked as a surrogate for certain people and their beliefs (think of how the Puritans smashed their way through the cathedrals of England). But it is particularly chilling to witness the attempts to erase history though the destruction of works of art. This is a sign of the times.
Now if art is itself involved in what Marshall Berman once called, "creative destruction", then we have to pay attention because it usually means that a civilisation is about to change religions. Art history has a term for this, "Iconoclasm" - literally, the destruction of ikons.
The Face is about to be Defaced.
So you can see why these two images I've posted today must go together.

Their anarchistic approach to sacred cows provided an opportunity for people in an already declining West to find a fresh start (see my previous discussion about Oswald Spengler). But the trick is knowing something about where you want to take that new society and making sure that no single person is left behind. It is one thing to deface the old face of the world, but quite another to make something beautiful again.
D.H. Lawrence (another writer who had imbibed Spengler), said of his 1928 novel, "Lady Chatterley's Lover": "Vitally, the human race is dying. It is like a great uprooted tree, with its roots in the air. We must plant ourselves again in the universe." But Homo Sapiens has always been Homo Religiosis. From the dawn of time (human history), human beings have been drawn to the numinous. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Numinous This is exactly what Jung was pointing to in his dispute with Freud. Jesus said that "Man cannot live by bread alone." And the Buddha called into question the very reality of material life itself with his concept of anatta (literally "no self" or complete impermanence).
So when our culture begins defacing its art, we need to ask what sort of religion is replacing the old. That is what these two images invite you to contemplate. This is why I speak out.

Here are 5 of my prequel trilogy protagonists I've made in the past year or so. It's almost been a year since I made my TPM figures, but I only made Qui-Gon then. For Attack of the Clones I made Padme, and then for Revenge of the Sith I made Anakin, Obi-Wan, and Mace Windu.
I plan on posting a similar picture with my villains later this week. In the meantime, let me know which of these you like best! Thanks guys :)
Ankaramena (Madagascar) - Cette photo me semble intéressante parce que les protagonistes ne sont pas souriants. Ce qui est rare dans ce pays.
Je m'étais écarté seul du lieu de vente des bovins pour me perdre dans le marché aux légumes. En revenant vers mon véhicule, sur la seule route carrossable du village, j'ai croisé ces jeunes gens aux regards peu engageants. Il faut préciser que les vazas (étrangers blancs) ne s’arrêtent jamais dans ce coin de brousse. Comme ces jeunes ne semblaient pas ravis de me voir ici, j'ai déclenché mon appareil alors qu'il était à la hauteur de ma poitrine. Sans viser, en marchand -pas trop vite-, en prenant la précaution de mettre le zoom sur la position grand-angle tout en choisissant une ouverture suffisamment petite pour rattraper un éventuel défaut mise au point. Coup de chance, l'autofocus a fait le point sur l'épaule du personnage central (en jaune avec son chapeau) et mon cadre était correcte. Déclencher en marchant et sans viser, je commence à maîtriser la technique, même si ce n'est pas une science exacte. On est dans le registre de la roulette russe… aux conséquences moins fatales.
Si j'ai "volé" cette photo, ce n'est pas que je craignais des représailles, mais pour qu'ils ne me demandent pas de l'argent. Cette sollicitation perpétuelle commençait à me fatiguer à ce stade de mon voyage.
Cette photo me permet de corriger une idée largement répandue. Madagascar a la réputation d’être un pays dangereux. Personnellement, en cinq longs séjours depuis 2016, je n'ai jamais ressenti le moindre sentiment d’insécurité. Il n’est cependant pas question de tomber dans un angélisme béat. Si ce pays à cette réputation, c’est qu’il y a une part de réalité. Cependant, toutes les histoires d'agressions qui mon été rapportées démontrent combien les touristes qui en ont été victimes ont été imprudents. Dans un pays réputé pour sa pauvreté, on n'exhibe pas son argent et autres richesses en public. On évite de sortir seul la nuit dans les nombreux endroits où il n'y a pas d'éclairage public, particulièrement dans la capitale où là, effectivement, vous avez une chance sur deux de faire de mauvaises rencontres. Moi quand je sors la nuit, je ne me déplace jamais seul et je prends un taxi, comme le recommande l'ambassade de France. Sauf à Fort-Dauphin, réputée pour être une ville tranquille avec un taux de criminalité proche de zéro. Pour être honnête, vous avez statistiquement moins de chance d'être agressé à Madagascar qu'à Paris.

I had wandered away alone from the place where the cattle were sold to get lost in the vegetable market. On my way back to my vehicle, on the only motorable road in the village, I came across these young people with unprepossessing looks. It should be noted that the vazas (white foreigners) never stop in this corner of the bush. As these young people did not seem happy to see me here, I triggered my camera while it was at the height of my chest.
Without aiming, taking the precaution of putting the zoom on the wide-angle position while choosing an aperture small enough to compensate for any possible focus fault. Luckily, the autofocus focused on the shoulder of the central character (in yellow with his hat) and my frame was correct.
To trigger while walking and without aiming, I'm starting to master the technique, even if it's not an exact science.We are in the register of Russian roulette, with less fatal consequences. If I "stole" this photo, it's not because I feared reprisals, but so that they wouldn't ask me for money.This perpetual solicitation was beginning to tire me at this point in my travel.
This photo gives me the opportunity to correct a widely held idea. Madagascar is said to be a very dangerous country. Personally, in five long stays, I have never felt the slightest feeling of insecurity. However, there is no question of falling into angelism. If this country has this reputation, it is because there must be some reality. However, all the stories of assaults that have been reported to me demonstrate how reckless the tourists who were victims were.
In a country known for its poverty, people do not display their money and other wealth in public. We avoid going out alone at night in the many places where there is no public lighting, particularly in the capital where, in fact, you have a one in two chance of meeting bad people. When I go out at night, I never go alone and I always take a taxi, as recommended by the French embassy. Except in Fort-Dauphin, renowned for being the quietest city in the country with a crime rate close to zero. To be honest, you are statistically less likely to be attacked in Madagascar than in Paris.

There are several monuments and sites dislocate in Turin, protagonists of strange esoteric legends. One of these is certainly the door of Palazzo Trucchi di Levaldigi, better known as the Devil's Door. This building now houses the headquarters of the Banca Nazionale del Lavoro and, given the reputation of its door, it is also known as the Devil's Palace.
The door was sculpted in 1675 by a Paris manufactory at the request of Giovanni Battista Trucchi di Levaldigi, count and finance general of Carlo Emanuele II. The door, very beautiful, is richly carved and adorned with flowers, fruit, animals and cupids. The most interesting thing, which has contributed to the name it bears today, is the central knocker which depicts the devil who scrutinizes the visitors knocking on the door. The final part, the one you take with your hand to knock, is made up of two snakes whose heads come together at the central point. Another legend dates back to 1790, when the Palace belonged to Marianna Carolina of Savoy. Legend has it that during an important and sumptuous carnival party, one of the dancers who performed to entertain guests fell to the ground and was stabbed to death. The culprit was never found, much less the murder weapon. On the very night of the murder, a real storm of wind and rain broke out on the city, culminating in blinding lightning, thunderous thunder and shattered glass. A cold wind blew inside the building and turned off all the lights, the guests ran away screaming. A short time later a ghost was sighted roaming the rooms of the building, that of the dancer cruelly killed on the night of the party
Still on the history of the building it is said that, in 1600, it was the seat of the Fabbrica dei Tarocchi. A curious coincidence that perhaps fueled the aura of mystery and the story of black magic that accumulates in this building according to esotericists. The tarot card that is associated with the Devil is 15, which was the street number of the building in 1600. Today the public service bus that passes through that area is, needless to say, number 15.
