Entrecasteaux is a village about 7km from here. We went there last week for a drive out and the imposing Château caught my attention. While looking for a bit of privacy (we were both 'caught short') we unintentionally ended up on this very quiet road which fortunately gave us a commanding view of the Château and its surrounds so it was out with the camera once I'd zipped up! :-))

The Château was originally built in the 11th century but rebuilt later in the 15th, 16th and 18th centuries. In 1974, after several decades of abandonment, the castle was restored by the British painter Hugh Ian Macgarvie-Munn who turned the Château into a museum. We're aiming to go and visit it properly in March when it reopens.

Tryfan in the Ogwen Valley after a decent dusting of snow overnight, shortly before sunrise this morning... By the time sunrise came, the clouds had properly rolled in and the snow was falling again. But I can think of worse places to spend an early morning

It can be tricky properly exposing black bird's feathers [and eyes] but adding to the difficulty is their love for the marsh at this refuge that faces the sun...so you have a backlit subject to boot. I love these birds and despite the lighting challenges, I just can't pass up a shot.

Exeter Cathedral, properly known as the Cathedral Church of Saint Peter in Exeter, is an Anglican cathedral, and the seat of the Bishop of Exeter, in the city of Exeter, Devon, in South West England. The present building was complete by about 1400 and has several notable features, including an early set of misericords, an astronomical clock and the longest uninterrupted medieval stone vaulted ceiling in the world.

So this crazy idea came to me that if I still have vacation days left by Christmas I'll buy a ticket to Prague and hermit away the holiday in a cozy inn in a romantic foreign city. If everything falls in place properly this might just be able to happen!

(Escalante Desert, Utah)

The problem with long days not quite properly planned is getting camp settled before dark, which tonight coincided with sundown. Eating in the dark is fine, but tent sites are better surveyed with daylight left. Accomplished, but food still on hold, I wander a ways out into the desert to enjoy the early evening. At this moment, nothing is willing to let go. In the distance the Straight Cliffs still get the prismatic bend of sunset, as do the scattered forms above, begging me to be quick before they turn to gray. The pinions closer in are gathering dusk while sand, rock and prairie grass still bake off accumulated energy. I think the last of the light must be carried on a wind that almost always rises with sunset, as if it’s all too much for a disappearing sun to take with its final wink. There are all kinds of canyons, slots, arches, slick rock domes and bowls, and artwork in the Escalante, but most of it is like this. A vastness that I never tire of letting my eyes follow, walking visually between sage and juniper, down through draws imagining how they curve around to the next bench, stopping to linger at random hoodoos with a thought to discover what else is hiding there. It’s a landscape that tilts crazily, sedimentary epochs uplifted buckled and seemingly sunk on end sometime back when continents crashed. Twice a day we participate in a balance between the light and the darkness, an evening of the day’s luminary extremes. I can close my eyes and pour the day’s decisions and exertions onto an imaginary scale against the weight of thoughts the night will hold. I most often realize I wasn’t paying attention, and the moment takes me by surprise, a leveling bubble tipping towards time. And I play the game of evening it out...a fool’s errand.

It produced one flower two months early, just in time for my new macro lens to arrive :-)

Now I need to learn to use it properly.

More properly known as Bearded Reedlings, but when I was growing up in the 1960's, leafing through my Observers Book of Birds and ticking off sightings on outdoor walks in my I-Spy book, these localised, rare and to me, exotic little beauties that I never imagined I'd see, were called Bearded Tits, so that is how I always refer to them.

Amazing to me that they bred at this site in 2012 and can be seen in Nottinghamshire. A real treat yesterday to watch them industriously feeding on the reed seeds for well over an hour, feet away and largely oblivious to our quiet, entranced, presence.

Thanks for viewing and thank you all for the faves and kind comments, all of which are very much appreciated.

A new location to me that I wanted to check out. Amazing views from there, looking over Epsom golf course to the city, which is 15 miles away. I tried lots of different spots to get the skyscrapers in Vauxhall on the left in properly but just not possible with the positioning of the trees.

A simple two shot focus stack, one for the golf course and one for the city. Deliberately wanted to leave the foreground trees left and right slightly soft to give more of a draw into the city.

Thanks very much for viewing. Have a great weekend!

This little fly was actually in the lid of a collecting jar during a invertebrate survey on Saturday. Its a tiny little thing and it was briefly examined then released. I think it is one of the Sciapus flies but it needs to be properly identified, as it may be a new recording here it seems.

Re-edited for 2022.

I came over a stile on the Llandegfedd reservoir circular trail and found myself confronted with ... another stile. With no fence around it. It was clearly newer than the one that I had just crossed, but utterly without purpose.

A Peony from Colleen's garden.

The fattest and most scrumptious of all flowers, a rare fusion of fluff and majesty, the peony is now coming into bloom. –Henry Mitchell, American writer (1923-93).

Peonies are outrageously beautiful in bloom, with lush foliage all summer long. These perennials may live longer than you do—some have been known to thrive for 100 years. The plants require little maintenance as long as they are planted properly and establish themselves; they do not respond well to transplanting. www.almanac.com/plant/peonies

So, is Flickr working properly again yet...?

We've yet to see a monarch, but I did spot this Red Milkweed Beetle (Tetraopes tetrophthalmus) on our milkweed flowers the other day in the front yard. The split eyes make it difficult to photograph, and from this angle, you only see one half of the eye...

It is one of my favorite times of the day.

The Sun has just appeared above the roofs of the building across the street, casting an intense light in which any reflection, properly out of focus, turns into beautiful bokeh.

Everyone knows to properly take care of your unicorn you must feed it snacks between every 2hour period.

Lack of snacks will render the unicorn immobile and unwilling to provide magical rainbow farts which will cause a lack of rainbow methane in the atmosphere. Crops will die and people will starve.

Be sure to feed your unicorn, murderer!

Before properly embarking on our tour around Thailand we decided to have some chill time at the beach and stayed for a few days at Cha Am, only about 3 hours from Bangkok. In the distance you can see Chopsticks Hill, which featured in my previous set from Hua Hin

Today was the first properly cold day of this winter - the chickens' water was frozen this morning, and everything was all white and frosty :-)

SL Prompt Project 2025

I took this photo over the summer, but I never got to properly introduce my FC LLRH, Parker :)

I did her faceup, so please be kind.

Last weekend after shooting Amtrak, I found a nice mix of properly-painted Providence & Worcester power sitting outside the Worcester shop. With only that one orange turd intruding on the scene, it was almost like better days.

Decent rain in Northwest Queensland has the rivers and creeks flowing properly for the first time in years. Spring Creek, Mount Isa, QLD.

The decision was made, the bags were packed. The supplies were gathered and the map was properly marked. But even if she’s made up her mind, it didn’t mean the choice to move on from any friends she’d made, was an easy one. This had been her home for almost three years now… but it was time. As her legs dangled down over the sheet ghettos below, her eyes strained to see past the city, beyond towards the tiny green dot that teased her on the horizon. A smile tugged on her lips as a hand reached to mess with Daisy’s ears. “Hope we packed your walkin’ shoes… got a nice adventure t’morrow.”

Seen on Hobsons Bay on Saturday. I was hoping they might come a little closer together to form the heart properly.

Properly enjoyed until the last second!

With a properly placed flatcar first up for going away shots, here rolling westward just west of London, Ontario this Canadian Pacific extra will slow, stop and take the siding at Lobo siding just ahead as a wonderful consist of GP9 - RS18 - FP7A 4036 heads for Windsor on December 30, 1976.

A CSXT/Pan Am Rigby yard crew is in the process of turning a loaded welded rail train to orient it properly for unloading. The train had arrived in Rigby after coming up on M426 from Worcester and would continue east on the rear of that manifest to Waterville the next morning. It is ultimately destined for the track upgrades going on between Northern Maine Junction and Mattawamkeag as CSXT rebuilds the old Maine Central mainline they purchased last year.

After pulling out of Rigby they ran a couple miles east up District 1 to CPF 197 where they pulled down the Yard 8 lead. Today that lead only extends about a mile to serve the Merrill Marine Terminal and the relatively new intermodal facility serving Eimskip. However, until the early 80s this Portland Terminal company line headed straight down the center of Commercial Street serving the wharfs and interchanging with the Grand Trunk (CN) at their India Street Terminal. Alas all that is gone now and Commercial Street has been transformed into a popular tourist and nightlife destination known as The Old Port with pubs, shops, and fine dining. The GT is gone too replaced by a trail and the Maine Narrow Gauge museum.

Having completed turning the train they are shoving east through the crossover from Main 2 to 1 at CPF 196 before heading back west from where they came with their merger pair of geeps in the form of MEC 514 and CSXT 2548 leading the way. The former is a GP40-2W blt. Apr. 1976 as CN 9655 and the latter is a GP38-2 blt. Nov. 1973 as SCL 548 and delivered in black and yellow.

The last time I photographed at this spot the historic brick Maine Central Railroad headquarters building was visible in the background. Thought it still stands up on St. John St. it is no longer visible here thanks to the building of the big new parking garage seen here. Even sadder, the garage led to the destruction the historic Portland Terminal Tower X that stood for more than a half century after Portland Union Station was lost to the wrecking ball. But everything changes and it won't be too far in the future that Guilford gray and orange and the classic searchlight signals both still serving here are also but memories...

Known properly as the Flavian Amphitheatre, this most famous of Roman landmarks takes its name from the giant statue of the emperor Nero that once stood near this location. Originally capable of seating some 50,000 spectators for animal fights and gladiatorial combats, the amphitheatre was a project started by the Emperor Vespasian in 72 and completed by his son Titus in the 80. The Colosseum when completed measured 48 m high, 188 m in length, and 156 m in width.

The sun properly came out for this walk showing off the autumn colours perfectly. The Druance is a tributary of the River Orne, one of the main rivers of Normandy and finally enters the English Channel near to Caen. I couldn't decide between this panorama of the valley and the next. Which do you think is better?

Reset the mind to restart properly

This is a composite. But the Milky Way in the picture is approximately in the position that the actual MW was at that time of night.

I took a shot of the scene during blue hour for the landscape,

then took about ten shots for the stars and processed them in Starry Landscape Stacker, then another 9 shots for the lightpainting of the caboose. All with the camera staying put on the tripod.

Unfortunately the MW did not show up properly in the shot due to the moon being quite bright already and the sun still contributing light to the sky during nautical twilight. So I took an image of the MW that I took about 4 years ago in early June and used it as a stand in.

I'm hoping to take the same shot again during the next new moon phase and just a little later in the evening.

I'll accept if you call this picture a "fake".
