I think most people see sailboats and think of a relaxing endeavour, soaking up the sunshine as the soft winds blow, the vessels like immense swans gliding along the water blissfully.
Perhaps that’s actually the case for most folks out on their boats, however, my experience with sailing was quite different. I was only ever on a sailboat a handful of times but each of those were with Barnacle Bill. Bill (his real name) was my father and he bought a sailboat shortly after I was married so sailing wasn’t something with which I grew up. That meant I hadn’t been properly trained to be a sailor and neither had Norm.
Our first time out Dad issued the rules and we were more than willing to learn and abide. Yet as the outing progressed Bill’s barking grew more and more intense.
“Don’t sit there!”
“Grab that line!”
(What line? What do you want me to do with it?)
And so it went.
There seemed to be a very real possibility that we were going to be keelhauled or, at the very least, made to walk the plank. If you ever saw the ‘Friends’ episode where Rachel was trying to teach Joey how to sail you’ll have a clear idea of what I’m trying to describe.
I do know that his high anxiety was his concern for everyone’s safety and thus was quite forgivable but truth be told ever since those experiences I have been quite content to simply get the occasional photograph of a sailboat. :-)
Definition Of A Sailboat: A hole in the water into which you pour money.

This habitat enhancement project could be called a wrap at this point. The pond is up and running properly and the birds are enjoying the areas that were built for them. The pond lilies and bog plants are thriving and the mosquito fish are doing well and making more. It's time to add the rest of the (native) fish.
Once the construction zone around the pond is cleared and re-worked I shall take a photograph of the whole pond. As for size, it holds about 3,500 gallons of water and is approximately 24' x 12' with areas of depth ranging from 1' to 3'. The bog area is about 7' round and 1.5' deep, it is filled with tiny gravel and plants to filter the pond naturally.

While in keeping with the parade of menhaden in midair, this baitfish is more floating than flying in the beak of a juvenile Tricolored Heron on Horsepen Bayou. Atypically, the fish is not yet positioned properly to go down the gullet, but regardless, there is no escape. Number five in the "Birds Eating Menhaden" series.
So lately I've been trying out new painting techniques that I learned from Warhammer Tv so yeah, also learning to use washes properly.
Ich bin wieder da! Beide Augen wurden operiert. Allerdings dauert es noch etwas bis ich wieder "richtig" sehen kann. Deshalb werden in der ersten Zeit eher unregelmäßig Fotos hochgeladen.
I'm back! Both eyes were operated on. However, it still takes some time until I can see "properly" again. Therefore, photos are uploaded rather irregularly in the beginning.
brought to me yesterday evening by my Timmy :-) He always let her run for a moment in the living room and then caught her again. I was able to catch her with a glass and of course she was quickly snapped before I let her out in front of the house :-) Hopefully I didn't hurt her tail with the glass.
I locked Timmy in the living room for this time. He then looked disappointed that I didn't properly appreciate his gift. He had probably thought that we could chase the mouse together in the living room ;-)

It is with great delight that I post this picture after thinking that I had lost everything due to a hard drive crash (photos are on a different drive so I knew the originals were safe). While I thought I had everything backed up, my back program wasn't working properly.
My brother worked his magic and after freezing the hard-drive, then keeping it on ice, after about 6 hours, we were able to copy the corrupted C-drive across to the new one, via a laptop, then a portable HD then back to my computer for almost complete recovery. Have had to reinstall everything, but so far so good.
There is a lesson in that for all of us!!

Well I did get a pretty cool present from my daughters and their significant others for Christmas. It is the Star Adventurer tracking mount for taking night photos of the sky.
So I spent the past few days reading up on how to use the unit, make sure it was calibrated and then aligning it properly with the north star so that long exposures can be taken of night sky elements.
Finally had a clear night to try out the alignment with Polaris which turned out pretty cool. Then mounted my 300 mm lens on the Canon 7D Mark II to try it out taking some photos of Pleiades, a formation of baby stars in the sky.
Given there were some thin clouds and moisture haze in the sky as well as a near quarter moon adding light that would be better off not there, and taking this from my yard in Baltimore County which is not even close to a 'dark' sky ... it was some cool practice to see that I was able to get the unit aligned correctly so that 1 to 3 minute exposures could be done. It was able to even pick up some of the gas there around the stars even under the partial moon and city lights impacting the sky.
This capture here was at ISO 800 and just over 70 seconds, and at f/8 to get some star bursts.
Given I have enjoyed viewing this stellar object through a telescope many years before ... the amount of light being picked up here by the longer exposure is so much better than what the eye can see through the scope.
Looking forward to using it under much darker sky conditions ...
This is dedicated to my friend, Phil.
Although we haven't properly spoken in a few years, our friendship remains to be one which has made a lasting impression. We first met during our time at university; he studied Music Technology, as I read Music Therapy. As one can imagine, our common interests were straight-away set in all things musical!
We have since gone our separate ways. While this family stayed put, Phil and his growing family travelled to Cambodia, to work for 'Wycliffe', translating the Bible into one of the many local dialects. One day, our families will meet again, and it will be a wonderful occasion.
Of the many things I grew to appreciate (such as drinking port, eating cheese and smoking cigars), I really enjoyed our experience of creating music together. We'd spend (and waste) countless hours, what with him on his nylon-strung guitar and I on the piano, playing (and singing) whatever came to mind. They were good times indeed...
So, part of his studies involved the recording and production of music, and it was in those three years that Phil wrote many of his songs. Over the many months, he introduced me to them. You can imagine my delight when he then asked me to play the piano for his album, 'Little Boats' (please feel free to go and listen to the tracks; headphones required!).
I often listen to these songs, and in so doing, instantly transport my mind back to those moments...
The snowdrops that have been growing since Christmas - getting bigger and bigger, are now open!! I really must split the clump and move them around the garden!

WIT: Got three forks, put them on a white background, and used a maglight to make the shadows.
Oh, I didn't read the brief properly, so should not have included the forks. Oops!
When used properly, pastry forks are meant to help cut into cake with the wider tine, eliminating the need for a knife. (It’s also particularly helpful with fish, where the notch can be used to help remove pieces of skin and delicate bones from your meal.)
T is for tines - the teeth of forks!

I'll explore Grantham properly one day, it's only about 20 minutes up the road. This photo was taken after I'd explored what's left of the Grantham canal.
No obvious architectural merit to anything in this scene alas. From the limited amount I've seen, Grantham seems to be one of those places which is given over to cars, with no obvious benefit to anyone or anything. But maybe I will be amazed by it all when I get the chance to look round properly.

Step outside your Western comfort zone, visit the Médina of Fes with its twisting, sloping, narrow streets, if you can properly call them that. There are countless and repetitive merchant stalls, donkeys, carts, and impossible crowds, and shopping opportunities, such as the shoes in this leather shop.

Horseshoe Bend is a horseshoe-shaped meander of the Colorado River located near the town of Page, Arizona, in the United States.
Horseshoe Bend is located 5 miles (8.0 km) downstream from the Glen Canyon Dam and Lake Powell within Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, about 4 miles (6.4 km) southwest of Page.
It is accessible via hiking a 1.5-mile (2.4 km) round trip from U.S. Route 89, but an access road also reaches the geological structure, as it is part of a state park. Horseshoe Bend can be viewed from the steep cliff above.
The overlook is 4,200 feet (1,300 m) above sea level, and the Colorado River is at 3,200 feet (980 m) above sea level, making it a 1,000-foot (300 m) drop.
The rock walls of Horseshoe Bend contain a variety of minerals, among which are hematite, platinum and garnet.
(Now, to understand this place, you have to be here, I always wanted to walk by the river side, but it would be at another time and in other circumstances, of which I have very little record in photos. I was working in these areas when I was in the United States Armed Forces.)
Life can be so hectic from time to time that you nearly forget to breathe properly
When life bites you in your butt you need some hideouts where you can land again
Being stressed out is unhealthy for your body and mind
We all have different ways to apporach this, and if you don't think you have a way it's smart to think a bit and wonder

If the guys in this boat didn't find it I at least found it just by being in the moment

The old town of Matillas,
Speaking properly we should talk about Matillas (the old one) and La Estación (the new one). Let's start with the original: located in the valley of Henares, next to the Roman road to Zaragoza, it was founded and baptized in the repopulation of the XII-XIII centuries, giving it such name for the existing vegetation. It was integrated into the Common Lands of Atienza until the fourteenth century, when it passed to the Lord of Jadraque. Its people lived on cereal (wheat, barley and rye) and sheep.
In this term, due to its location, important battles were fought in the War of Succession (18th century), Carlistas (XIX) and Civil War (In) (1936-39) that left their trail. When the quarries were launched in 1904, the industry and the railway arrived that caused the ruin of the old town and the birth of a new one, next to the factory and station (La Estación). (Source: Blog of La Vereda de Puebla )

I had wanted to visit Coney Island for a number of years, but the slight difficulty of getting there meant it was not very high on my priority list until now.
The island is certainly a lot bigger than I thought and it may take more than one visit to properly explore it. It reminds me a little of Pulau Ubin but a more cleaner and easier route to travel around by bicycle.
Some experimentation was done in post processing of this shot so things might look a little different from usual shot of photos.
Portora Royal School, more properly called Enniskillen Royal School, traces its foundation to a decree by James I of England (James VI of Scotland) that was issued in 1608. His wish was that 'there shall be a free school at least in each county, appointed for the education of youth in learning and religion.' It had been intended that such a school should be built in the county town. At the time of the proclamation County Fermanagh had no town to which the description 'county' could be applied, in fact it could be said that the county had no settlements to which the description 'town' could be applied.
The famous, and some would say infamous, Oscar Fingal O’Flaherty Wills Wilde was a boarder; he attended the school during the period 1864 to 1872, subsequently to attend TCD and then Magdalen at Oxford.

I was so pleased to see that the puffins were still at their nesting site as they will be leaving soon to go out to sea for the winter. We met people just a few days after we were there and they didn't see any puffins. Timing is everything! I had an absolutely amazing evening with them when they flew much closer. Actually, they flew in just as we were arriving so 5 more minutes and I could have set up properly. After they started wandering around, no one moved so they would not be disturbed. This is not like some of the close-ups I got but that is for another day... The background is the distant ocean. Taken at Elliston, Newfoundland.
Thank you for your visit and comments. They are very much appreciated.

Another shot of the Chicago "Bean", more properly known as "Cloud Gate". This is the sculpture in Millennium Park in downtown Chicago that draws thousands of people, tourists and locals alike every day to stare into the curvy, reflective surfaces and try to see where they show up.
I took this photo this past Saturday on what is hopefully one of Chicago's last snowy weekends of this winter. I loved how the snow covered the top of the Bean, adding to its already fascinating beauty.
Being black all throughout its body, the crow is one of the birds that are most challenging to expose properly.
Exeter Cathedral,
properly known as the Cathedral Church of Saint Peter in Exeter, is an Anglican cathedral, and the seat of the Bishop of Exeter, in the city of Exeter, Devon, in South West England.
The present building was complete by about 1400 and has several notable features, including an early set of misericords, an astronomical clock and the longest uninterrupted medieval stone vaulted ceiling in the world.

I spent al little time at Little Zigzag Creek this morning, before the temperature hit 100º. There was occasional cloud cover interspersed with brillient sunlight mingling with the trees. It was a good day to be on the slopes of Mount Hood.
I have been having trouble printing pictures lately. I have to lighten them up quite a but from how they first look, despite having calibrated my printer, and, I thought, my monitor, (although I had to do it based on how my prints look. Well, I finally got my ColorMunki working properly. It turns out that my computer does not like special characters in the file names of the icc profiles. I removed the underscore in the name, and it worked flawlessly. Not I can print with wild abandon.
