Taken at the Rolling Hills Zoo and Museum just outside of Salina, Kansas. I find the chimpanzee's expression mesmerizing as he is seen gazing off into the distance.

This image was taken in challenging conditions--low lighting and the subject far away! The image detail suffers because of shooting at ISO 12,800 and at 316mm focal length. I dramatically reduced the noise in the image, but overall fidelity and detail cannot be recovered from nothing.

Status: Works, mostly. All of the slow shutter speeds (1/30th and slower) stick open. Focus lever is very stiff and likely miscalibrated. Otherwise, it works just fine.

Sounds like a manga superhero, looks like a typical Japanese rangefinder from the early 1960's. The lens is a Pronar 45mm f/1.8 mated to a Citizen-MVE shutter.

Clearly, at this working distance and focal length, f/6.3 doesn't give enough depth of field.

Chernivtsi, Ukraine.

On 13th - 14th of January 2018 in Vashkivtsi and on 15th of January 2018 in Chernivtsi took place Malanka Festival - costume carnival with fabulous procession.

Original name of the event is "Pereberia" which means changing clothes. The main participants are Malanka, Cossack, Buk Shandr, Ukrainian girl, bears, gypsies, grandfather and grandmother - disguised men and boys. Each year new characters appears that often reflected the most important events of the past year and shows them in new vision. Celebration in this format has been going on for more than 100 years.

Malanka Festival begins on January 13, 2018 about 20:00. Participants of the festival walk to the streets of Vashkivtsi and gather in groups, go from house to house and congratulate with Malanka. The roads pass decorated cars with loud music.

At sunrise the carnival moves to the roads of the city to meet visitors. Until the evening through Vashkivtsi village it is not easy to pass through - mummers "catch" cars, buses, even bicyclists and literally force them to take part in the festivital. Generously guests are sprinkled with wheat, wanting a rich and happy year.

Mandatory attribute of the celebration is bathing of participants of Malanka in a small river Teplichka. During bathing participants are cleansed of the evil spirit. Ignore the bathing procedure is prohibited.

Every year thousands of people from many parts of Ukraine and even from far abroad come to Vashkivtsi and number of fans of this carnival becomes more and more. Therefore citizens of Vashkivtsi are preparing for this day for a whole year: write scripts, prepare masks, sew festive clothes. Certainly one should visit this holiday of Ukrainian national traditions at least once in a lifetime.

Hutsulian wedding in Bukovina.

Chernivtsi, Ukraine.

A long time ago, before giving the bride to the reliable hands of her future husband, she would have been dressed in a strict appropriate manner.

How long does it take? For example, Hutsuls(Carpathian Mountain natives) could spend three hours dressing the bride. Sure you will say that modern brides may take as much time with their preparations, with all those hairstyles and manicures. But understand that Hutsuls are not accustomed to elaborate cosmetic use, as they prefer a more natural look.

When dressing their brides, Hutsuls would beautify her with colorful embroidered shirts, a wide woven belt, hankerchieves, a sheepskin coat, an embroidered necklace, and special shoes – red sandals. The bride's hair would be beautifully braided and decorated with different flowers, ribbons and various small, red trinkets in which coins and cloves of garlic are hidden inside as a preventative measure against bad energies. The bride's mother would also put a wreath on the head of her daughter, in which the bride cannot take off until the end of a wedding. This is performed as a blessing of good luck for the couple's future.

Nowadays, the wreath is often replaced with bread given from the godparents. The bread will be decorated with a little wreath on top. It is customary for the bride to kiss the bread while kneeling.
