An old "Magic Lantern"
This one has been converted to run with a "modern" projector bulb and gives excellent results with the old slides.

Presenters often don't know which keys to press to get their screen onto the projector. The projectors in Te Papa are great because they have this help screen which covers a wide range of common laptops.

Snoozeland is a collaborative installation that combines video, animation, found footage, audio, and sculpture. A main video projection in "front" displays the product of the fantastical internal workings of the sleeping mind, and in the "back" and all around is a diorama of a workshop of dreams staffed by plush and ceramic creatures and old and new projection technology, to keep the hallucinations going.
Viewable from Queen Street and on the CAMH grounds, this outdoor lightbox bursts with phantasmagoric whimsy, a nod to the chaos of how we actually process memories, the illusions and disillusions that we use to build our identity, and the unpredictable rollercoaster of dreams. Partly inspired by snoezelen rooms*, Snoozeland offers a bright oasis on the grounds of a hospital and a respite from the approaching winter.
The exhibition will be on view for the month of November and an animation component will be presented at the TIFF Bell Lightbox prior to screenings at Rendevous with Madness Film Festival.

WELL! I've just got back from France! I don't think I've ever walked as much in my life!!! It was so wonderful, the sun was glorious and besides the MASSES of tourists and people asking for money/cigarettes it was our own little adventure!

A few days ago I had my first band shooting with Open Water Collective. A friend of mine, Emily, asked me if I could do something that was a little different from usual band photos. Often you’re outside with the band, in abandoned places, fields, skate parks or similar where the band is posing. But they had a very particular idea in mind: having waves projected onto them infront of a big screen.
Fortunately I do own a projector and a sufficiently large screen...

Some of the mechanics of the projector used by the Kolb Brothers in their studio at the Grand Canyon. They used this projector from 1915 to the 1960s to show their famous movie, "Through the Grand Canyon from Wyoming to Mexico."

InFocus X2. Connected to the EyeHome and DVD player. The main fain died in it a while back and the projector shut off about 15 minutes after turning it on. I ended up putting in an 80MM PC case fan run off a power brick.
It occurred to me that I ought to look if my one and only Leitz lens could be put to some use other than its intended one. Alas, it became quite clear that the answer is no. With no focusing or aperture there is not a lot that can be done. Of course I don't give up easily and I did manage to get an image by floating it in front of the Oly 45mm (the wee little orchid is the result).
On a different note. I had not looked closely at my slide projector for some time and frankly I am in awe. It is over 40 years old and it works as it did when I bought it. In its first 3 decades it did have constant use and I only needed to replace the bulb once. It is made like a tank - weighing 7.5kg.
Not many things are made to this standard nowadays.
This large bulb from an old Kodak Pageant film projector was connected to a variac to control filament brightness. An LED flashlight was used to illuminate the various parts of the bulb while it was on.
