RAINWATER PROJECT MANAGEMENT

1.0 Introduction

Proper project cycle management is required to promote indigenous rainwater harvesting technology in the ASALs of Kenya Often times, this project cycle is catalyzed by the government, NGOs or external donors by funding demonstration projects. In this article I discuss the key success factors in such community water project management. The project cycle described is based on 5 phases that will be outlined below.

2.0 Project identification phase

Two main things happen during the project identification phase:-

•Need identification

•Stakeholder identification

2.1 The project need

The need for a community water project is identified by a project champion. A project champion can come from the community or from outside the community. The role of the project champion is to originate the project vision.

The project vision has the following 4 components:-

•Where are we now? How serious is the problem of water scarcity is the area?

•Where could we be if we had water? What things could we do if we had water?

•How could we solve the water problem? What facility could we install? How could we finance it?

•How can we ensure we succeed? What are the main risks and issues to be tackled? How can we overcome the risks and get the project going?

2.2 The project stakeholders

The project champion soon realizes that she/he cannot do the project alone. The project champion then seeks to involve the project stakeholders by doing the following things:-

a)Identifying the key stakeholders

In a community water project, these are likely to be the water project end-users, potential labourers, potential project administrators, the relevant government ministries, material suppliers, grant makers and collaborating partners like NGOs.

In particular the project champ should identify representatives of these stakeholders groups and convince them to push the idea together through a formal structure called the project management board (PMB).

b)Once the PMB has been agreed upon, the authority to start the project can be formalized in a document called a project charter.

c)The PMB should meet to discuss how to implement the project. This top-level plan can be formalized in a project execution plan.

d)The PMB may also agree on external consultants who can be used to do project design or supervise the construction. The sum total of all external agents and experts to be used on the project is called the project control board.

e)The project management board should also agree on the project manager who will manage the project on a day to day basis. The project board can then monitor and evaluate the performance of the project manager and report to the project stakeholders. This forms the project M & E plan.

f)The work the consultants will perform and the procedures they will use should be formalized in the project control procedure.

3.0 The project planning phase

The project planning phase is done by the project management board. The project board has to agree on the following 7 issues:-

•Why do we require a rainwater harvesting system?

•What should the system be able to do?

•How well should the system function?

•Who will be served by the system?

•Where will we source the funds to build and operate the system?

•Which methods will be used to assess the success or failure of the system?

•When will the activities agreed upon be done?

4.0 The project execution phase

The project manager is responsible for ensuring the project is implemented as planned or nearly so. The main issues the project manager looks at are:-

(i)Project time management

(ii)Project human resource management

(iii)Project cost management

iv) Project procurement management

5.0 Project closure phase

5.1 The project communication plan

The various project phases must be brought to a conclusion. Three things must be examined at the end of each phase or stage:

•The achievements of the project are assessed. What was achieved as planned? What was planned, but was never achieved? What was achieved but had not been planned?

•What lessons can be learnt from this project experience?

•How do we intend to use the lessons we learnt in future?

5.2 The project information distribution plan

The lessons learnt are distributed to the identified project stakeholders.

5.3 Project contract closure

The project is then formally closed down.

Today I was thinking how to motivate myself in this 365 project: reading photography blogs and websites, watching photographs on flikr and 500px, etc. Then, I found an article talking about ways to find inspiration and it talked about the automatic filters of our cameras. I decided to start playing with them for the next days.

This is the "Toy camera" effect.

I like the colours and the mood it produces. But my camera, a fuji xt1, doesn't let me control the ISO or the focus when playing with them, that's a bit annoying for me. They are also limited to JPG, but I don't care about RAW in this case.

The next days I'll show you the other "Advanced filters", some of them are really cool! You'll see.

Have you ever just closed your eyes and tried to see the real beauty around you. Like the sun on your face, the breeze through your hair or the song of the birds, the smell of the flowers, the laughter of a child, the softness of a kind word? Or did it take you somewhere further? Our Project Quilting Challenge this week was to be inspired by an amazing woman Annie Young. She's a painter, but not any painter she is blind. So, I read her blog, watched her videos and I had to put myself in her world. I asked myself "does it really matter if the bedspread matches the curtains, or if there is crown molding around the walls, or what color I'll wear today?" Unseen Beauty, This is what I named my project this week. I named it that because the MOST BEAUTIFUL of all things can't been seen at all. Many spend too much time worry about all the little things (they are just things) in their life that don't really even matter when we should be focusing on the most important things, that aren't things at all. I wrote a little ditty to go with my piece this week Unseen Beauty!

Like rain to the flowers,

Is love to our souls.

Sow seeds of kindness,

and a beautiful garden you'll

grow!

At lunchtime I went for a walk to explore my new work neighbourhood. I found part of Thorndon with interesting architecture.

Project Quilting's first challenge in Season 10 is "Hope springs eternal". I thought of the Hope Diamond. This is, I realise, a loose interpretation of a diamond, but it ties in with me wanting to make a foundation-pieced string block as I have a huge pile of scrap strips which I've been hoarding for too long.

So I made four, in multi-faceted colours which I thought would work well together. And after I'd stitched the binding on I realised that my PQMysteryQAL (from the previous week) was done in this same exact colourway, including the low-volume background and yellow binding.

The quilting is a little experimental, trying out a simple Zentangle design seen recently. It probably seems a little dark (it's a variegated brown) but I was dying to try out a new quilting thread (Signature 40wt cotton, colour is Taupe -- it's lovely to work with).

And all the while I was sewing this week, I was Hoping my LQS won't be closing down. And so, there's Hope stitched all through this piece.

obviously cheated a bit.... but i have been wanting to work this one (and too busy, ok lazy, to shoot this week.) So shoot me!

Today was an awesome day. I got to hung out with some awesome friends and we started a sewing project!

See, I'm a huge video game nerd, always have been. I never used to admit it because back in the day it was uncool to be a nerd, and yes, I cosplayed.

Since its been ten years since I last made a pleated skirt my friend and I decided that we should do practice skirts before making the actual skirts for our cosplay. If things work out, I'll be doing a cosplay as Yukiko from Persona 4 for PAX East. :)

This is the practice skirt, well, partly done at least, with Yukiko's fan.

This is a continuation of the current project of an Image a day.

This will take a year to complete. It will be a "Colour Project"....numbered 731 to 1100 and it will begin on September 1st 2022..

I will also include an additional 4 Sets that will last a month each.

First will be Vines and Vineyards in November.2022.

Second is Forests ,,Water, ,Trees and Leaves in February 2023.

Third "Light Eating Objects" in May 2023.

Forth will be another B&W . August 2023.

On top of all that every month will feature a small set of 4 pics with different themes.

As you can see I shall be a busy Bunny!.

Hope you like the stuff!!!!!!!.

Project Engineer Melvin Damoudt briefs District Engineer Col. Ed Chamberlayne on the status of the Training Barracks Upgrade Program (TBUP) for building 8609 on Fort Meade, Maryland, on Aug. 24. TBUP is an Army-wide project to modernize the living areas for Soldiers. The project is 45 percent complete, and it includes complete exterior and interior renovations with electrical, plumbing and living space upgrades in support of Soldiers attending training on the installation. (U.S. Army photo by Alfredo Barraza)

For this project I used the following mediums: Photography, Illustrator, Drawing, and Photoshop. To start off I created the flowers by hand using color pencils and uploaded them to Photoshop and made modifications to them. Along with that I uploaded a colorless sketch of leaves that I made. The chameleon was done within Illustrator. The leaves were found around Milwaukee and also were some pictures that my roommate took at a garden show which I asked for permission to use. The hand within the photo is my hand. To start off I believe a chameleon is a signifier of color it adapts to its environment based on mood, temperature, and or surroundings. I wanted to make the chameleon blend in to its environment which is green while making it different thus why it was done in Illustrator to signify that it’s not supposed to be part of the environment. Next I wanted to make some color pop out within the environment that looked different so I colored in flowers and then modified it a bit within Photoshop to give it a little more character and also stay with the theme of collaboration. For the bottom I added my hand along with a blank sketch to represent construction of the piece along with curiosity of what is to come. Along with that I added drop shadows to most of the things presented to give more of stance that it is popping out and actually there.

When it came to the 4 themes I incorporated collaboration by the use of different mediums (digital and physical) with follows they were drawn then modified (erased/morphed/color changed) within Photoshop. Curiosity would be incorporated with the idea that there is an animal within in the scene that sort of blends in the environment. Community with the sake that its incorporating different mediums the hand can be a signifier of community. Contrast by the use of drop shadow and stokes to distinguish each medium and object. Discovery by the environment that is portrayed within the Illustration, there is a lot to discover within a jungle.

Never got to finish some of my reviews (mostly my fault) but I didn't want to leave these pictures unreleased.

So here is the image gallery from the Project Mc2 Wave 3 Bryden review that never happened. Enjoy.

Project 366-1 (2010) February 11, 2010 42/365

I got to the buttonhole row on my sweater project and the directions said, "make your favorite buttonhole". I've never made one I liked very well, so I went to www.knittinghelp.com. Under "Advanced Techniques" I found the "One-Row Buttonhole" with written directions and a video to watch. I did it, although my first try was too small. Finally, I made 6 buttonholes and they are excellent! What a resource the web can be!

President Mahinda Rajapaksa inspected the ongoing work at Morana Reservoir and Irrigation Project in Nagadeepa, Mahiyanganaya yesterday (Sep. 10). The President during his visit inquired officials about the work schedule and provided instructions to complete the construction work on schedule, before the end of 2015. This project was initiated to address the drinking water scarcity and issue of water supply for farming in the Uva Province. The project is expected provide direct benefits to over 1200 families in the area.

Part of a 366 day project

"Just where I am January" all photos in January are taken just where I am, work, home, out shopping no special trips to take a photo.

I'm thinking of putting a few temporary streaks of colour in my hair. I was going to do it in the winter, to brighten up the days. But I might do it for my holiday/birthday trip next week. But it seems all the one-day spray-in ones are fairly pastel.

There was a gorgeous metallic purple one that claims to be temporary but it is a shampoo that lasts for 8 weeks. I don't want my whole head that colour and I'm not sure how it will take on my white hair. It was only $5. I guess I could buy it and try to carefully do only a small bit of my hair.

One of our Extreme Projects brings us to India to see how our engineers took on the largest modernisation project ever to be carried out on a live network. This network was operated by Vodafone, serving over 10 million customers across some of the most densely populated cities in the world- Delhi, Kolkata, Punjab and Mumbai. The network was struggling with poor reception, maxed out capacity and no future roadmaps for 3G support. The mission was to swap over 10500 sites within 13 months across four different regions. Thanks to global presence and local knowledge, here's how we did it.

This is High Street, part of Watling Street.

Watling Street is the name given to an ancient trackway in England and Wales that was first used by the Celts mainly between the modern cities of Canterbury and St Albans. The Romans later paved the route, part of which is identified on the Antonine Itinerary as Iter III: "Item a Londinio ad portum Dubris" - from London to the port of Dover. The name derives from the Anglo-Saxon Wæcelinga Stræt, which has come to be understood as the A2 road from Dover to London, and then the A5 road from London to Wroxeter. Originally the word "street" simply meant a paved road (Latin: "via strata"), and did not have the modern association with populated areas. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Watling_Street

the Roman road from London to Kent coast. Countless travellers have passed this way since Roman times, because it remained the main highway to the Continent until the 20th Century. The High Street formed part of the A2 trunk route up to 1980.

Rochester was an important centre even before the Romans settled here soon after 43A.D. Their encampment developed into a walled town called Durobrivae, which means 'The stronghold by the bridge.' Long stretches of the remaining medieval city wall follow the line of these earliest Roman defences. One part visible from the High Street has survived to its full height, complete with battlements, because it once formed part of the 19th century building - now demolished - which housed Sir Joseph Williamson's Mathematical School.
