World Chambers Congress Day 2: Business Programme

Page from the theatre programme for a production of "Katinka" at the Hippodrome Theatre, Keighley, staged by Keighley Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society in February 1930. This page includes the cast list.

Act I opens at the villa of Boris Strogoff (played by Alfred Cockcroft) on the Black Sea. Ivan Dimitri (Hartley Bolton) has returned from Paris and is surprised to learn that the beautiful Katinka (Dorothy Ackroyd) has received none of his letters or presents and instead intends to marry Boris. Wealthy American Thaddeus T. Hopper (Ernest Marsden) is requisitioned by Ivan to help him steal Katinka away. This he does by pretending Katinka is his wife and fleeing to a hotel in Anzuli in Persia.

Act II is set in a street in Persia, where Hopper encounters his real wife, Helen (Peggy Eaton), who is staying at a different hotel. Amid complications aplenty, Katinka ends up enlisted in a troupe of Circassian dancing girls, recruited by Parisian cabaret manager Monsieur Knopf (Arthur B. Hird).

The final act takes place in the Parisienne Cafe where a showdown between Boris, Katinka's mother Tatiana (Margaret Reilly), Boris' first wife Olga (Edith Stubbs), and the Hoppers is satisfyingly resolved, leaving Ivan and Katinka to renew their vows.

Also in the cast were Phyllis Turner, Frank Hudson, Alec Best, John Crabtree, Verney Shuttleworth and Nora B. Spencer. The show also included a cabaret appearance from the New Rhythm Orchestra, and a party of choir boys from St. Peter's church featured in the second act.

The 52-page programme was printed by The Keighley Printers Ltd. of High Street, Keighley. The programme was part of an anonymous donation made in 2022.

Programme cover, Gilbert & Sullivan's "The Mikado." Sept 1969. I used to love sitting through the rehearsals, as the chorus learned their parts. It sent shivers up your spine, and then to watch it acted out. From about the age of 11, I became chief curtain operator, a job I loved (see an earlier comment) Before then I used to crouch in the little gantry, stage right on the stage and watch every performance. Joy !

Forum was exploring practices of organising and supporting residency programmes, examining their role as hubs for inter-local and inter-cultural exchange. It gathered cultural professionals and artists from different fields of contemporary art, as well as decision-makers and experts. It provided an opportunity to discuss and critically reflect on current practices and support models, to learn from each other and to share ideas on how residency programmes can be improved in order to resonate better with current and future cultural and social dynamics. Forum aimed to contribute to the development of cultural policies that would provide an adequate support for such programmes in Croatia and other European countries that share similar challenges. Programme of the Forum consisted of working sessions, panel discussions, conversations and presentations.
