UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund, jointly with UNICEF, lead the largest global programme to accelerate the abandonment of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). In line with Zero Tolerance Day for FGM on 6 February 2017, UNFPA lead a mission to Kenya's Narok County to document UNFPA’s active participation to encourage the abandonment of the practice. Female Genital Mutilation, FGM, involves altering or injuring the female genitalia for non-medical reasons. It negatively impacts a girl’s psychological, emotional and physical well-being, education, health and gender equality rights, and is internationally recognized as a human rights violation. Maasai culture, often praised and used as a tourist attraction, encourages FGM which is views as the key to success in all aspects of life. Many Maasai families cannot afford to give their children formal schooling, so to protect their daughters from lives of poverty, they choose to marry them off at a young age. Because Maasai girls are traditionally considered children until they are circumcised, it is seen as imperative for a Maasai girl to undergo the circumcision rite before she is married making FGM a precursor to child marriage. This strongly ingrained cultural belief propels families to go to great lengths to complete the circumcision. Both FGM and child marriage negatively impact long-term poverty reduction and development outcomes. In collaboration with World Vision Kenya as an implementing partner UNFPA identify Narok County in Maasailand as one of eight targeted counties in Kenya where UNFPA-supported interventions are transforming and saving lives of women and girls in the county.
Each year staff and young people from across our projects come together for the BIG DAY OUT - a sports day with good food and lots of fun.
This year's winners were the START Programme.
As part of an educational programme run by SNH, 2 schools in the area surrounding Loch Leven NNR were given the ova of Brown Trout to rear and watch grow in their classrooms. This day saw the release of the trout which had just become unfed fry. In June, we will return to this burn to carry out electrofishing which will allow the children to see how much their trout have grown.

War as Theatre
It was not only state propaganda that from the very first days of the war ensured that the people were informed about what was going on at the front. What often seemed more important were the rumours going round and what came from unofficial sources. Attempts were made to read between the lines, pouncing on anything that might provide information about what was happening at the front and abroad. Since for the most part the newspapers only contained official war reports and comments based on them, the demand grew for other sources. What the people wanted was a deeper and broader knowledge and above all illustrations of the reports. However, the communication of what was happening at the front had its particular features, with information, disinformation and propaganda going hand-in-hand, such as the construction of a large war theatre in Vienna's Prater. Commercial aspects also played a role.
Forum was exploring practices of organising and supporting residency programmes, examining their role as hubs for inter-local and inter-cultural exchange. It gathered cultural professionals and artists from different fields of contemporary art, as well as decision-makers and experts. It provided an opportunity to discuss and critically reflect on current practices and support models, to learn from each other and to share ideas on how residency programmes can be improved in order to resonate better with current and future cultural and social dynamics. Forum aimed to contribute to the development of cultural policies that would provide an adequate support for such programmes in Croatia and other European countries that share similar challenges. Programme of the Forum consisted of working sessions, panel discussions, conversations and presentations.
