UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund, jointly with UNICEF, lead the largest global programme to accelerate the abandonment of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). In line with Zero Tolerance Day for FGM on 6 February 2017, UNFPA lead a mission to Kenya's Narok County to document UNFPA’s active participation to encourage the abandonment of the practice. Female Genital Mutilation, FGM, involves altering or injuring the female genitalia for non-medical reasons. It negatively impacts a girl’s psychological, emotional and physical well-being, education, health and gender equality rights, and is internationally recognized as a human rights violation. Maasai culture, often praised and used as a tourist attraction, encourages FGM which is views as the key to success in all aspects of life. Many Maasai families cannot afford to give their children formal schooling, so to protect their daughters from lives of poverty, they choose to marry them off at a young age. Because Maasai girls are traditionally considered children until they are circumcised, it is seen as imperative for a Maasai girl to undergo the circumcision rite before she is married making FGM a precursor to child marriage. This strongly ingrained cultural belief propels families to go to great lengths to complete the circumcision. Both FGM and child marriage negatively impact long-term poverty reduction and development outcomes. In collaboration with World Vision Kenya as an implementing partner UNFPA identify Narok County in Maasailand as one of eight targeted counties in Kenya where UNFPA-supported interventions are transforming and saving lives of women and girls in the county.

7 December 2010 - At a ceremony marking the launch of the programme in Osire, Namibian athletics star and IOC member Frankie Fredericks said, “Our work here is to provide hope to the young people of this settlement. If they are given more opportunities to dream, they will have more reasons to pursue them and make them a reality. Sport may not always seem as significant as other forms of aid, but it can have a considerable positive impact on lives.” © UNHCR

ESCP Europe Business School launched its new Bachelor in Management (BSc) programme at its London campus with a special welcome for both students and families.
The Class of 2018 - 47 undergraduates from 16 nationalities - gathered with parents and siblings to hear from the Dean, Prof. Dr. Frank Bournois, who shared the School’s vision and philosophy, and heralded the start of the programme at the School’s London Campus.
Over three years, Bachelor students at ESCP Europe will travel to three of the School’s European campuses. After spending their first year in London, they will move to either Madrid or Turin. Finally, the full class will reunite for a final year at the Berlin campus.
The Dean of Academic Affairs, Prof. Dr. Andreas Kaplan, a graduate of the School himself and originator of the programme, impressed upon the group that this was the beginning of a unique journey for them – and one for which they had been very carefully selected.
Prof. Dr. Simon Mercado, Director of ESCP Europe’s London campus, welcomed the students to London and into a wider community of learners at the city’s campus. This includes about 500 students studying Master programmes in Business Management, European Business, Energy Management, Creativity Marketing and Business Administration (MBA).
Finally, Peter Globokar, Managing Director of Mooreland Partners and an alumnus of the School, was introduced as the Mentor for the BSc. He attributed his success with Mooreland, an international technology-focused M&A and fundraising advisory, to the entrepreneurial spirit and international experience he gained at ESCP Europe.
As the welcome speeches ended, the guests were officially welcomed to London in the most British way possible: an afternoon cream tea.

Page from the theatre programme for a production of "Sybil" at the Hippodrome Theatre, Keighley, staged by Keighley Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society in February 1937. This page includes portraits of dramatic poses made by the cast, taken by Keighley-based professional photographer W. Bruce Johnston, and details of the Grand Dance to be held in the Municipal Hall on Tuesday 23rd February 1937.
Keighley Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society's production of "Sybil" played at the Hippodrome Theatre in Keighley for six nights (and a Saturday matinee) from Monday 15th February 1937. The military comic opera was written by Max Brody and Franz Martos, with music by Victor Jacobi and lyrics by Harry Graham and Harry B. Smith. The KAODS production was produced by H. Flockton Foster, with musical director R. Lewis Scargill.
The story is set in pre-Revolutionary Russia. Sybil Renaud (played by Rhoda Heap), a talented vocalist is touring Russia accompanied by impressario Monsieur Charles Poire (W. Lupton Brooks). Lieutenant Paul Petrov of the Imperial Guard (Arthur Day) falls in love with Sybil and deserts his post to be with Sybil as she travels to Bomsk. The Governor of Bomsk (Ernest Marsden) is preparing the town for a visit by the Grand Duke and Duchess Constantine. Sybil is mistaken for the Duchess, an error she plays along with in order to prevent Lieutenant Petrov being punished as a deserter. The Grand Duke (Eric B. Broster) arrives and plays along with the conceit, but when the Grand Duchess (Edith Clarke) finds out what is happening she is less than impressed. The confusion continues until Sybil confesses all and everyone lives happily ever after. As the programme put it: "Add to the above the many smart officers and ladies, in brilliant uniforms and gorgeous costumes, really tuneful music, and delightful scenic effects and dances, and you have in 'Sybil' a general ensemble that will please the eye and, we trust, entrance the senses of those who witness it."
The show also starred Margaret Best, Alan Petty, John Mitchell, Clifford Heap, Fred Gillott, Albert E. Shepherd and Harry Moore.
The 48-page programme was designed and printed by The Keighley Printers Ltd. of High Street, Keighley. It measures approximately 185mm by 250mm. The programme was part of an anonymous donation given in 2022.
