UWO Graphic arts students present their final self directed projects for critique in the art department in the Arts and Communications building. Tuesday, December 11, 2018.
our school has a whole series of concerts they're doing this spring. i've worked up these concepts relatively quickly (a couple of hours, each). but they need more...more something.
the music director is fine with the Parablelooza art as it is, but it still feels like it's missing something.
i'm thinking the Willy Wonka just needs more color (color the letters, add some gobstoppers or something).
I'm at a complete loss for what to add to Spring Concert.

The upper one is a single-pass carving. The lower one is two pass, once rowwise then once columnwise.
The Gcode for these was created using an svg file found on wikipedia.
* rendered the SVG (using firefox, even)
* pulled it into The Gimp and selected by color the figure.
* 'feathered' the selection by 20 pixels
* flood-filled the selection with black onto a new layer.
* merged that layer down with a white layer
* inverted the result (so it is a sort of glowing white version of the figure on a back background)
* pulled that image as a jpeg into the ENC Axis image2gcode program, which made the gcode
* cut it with a .16inch ballnose bit.
(please ignore the flaw on the second carving...I messed up homing the X axis the first time around... oops.)

For the second consecutive year, The Pointe residents have corresponded with several elementary classes as part of our Pen Pal Program. At the end of the school year, a group of residents visit the school and meet the children they have been sending letters to. The children were just as excited as the residents to finally meet. One class read stories to the residents and another gave a presentation on jaguars. The program is one of our most successful and popular among our residents and they are already looking forward to school starting in the fall. Not sure the kids feel the same about that though!
