After a tour of Schönbrunn, the summer palace of the Habsburgs, guests can experience an entertaining Apfelstrudel show, demonstrating how to make the amazing Viennese dessert yourself. These ladies were the ringmasters of the kitchen and made it all look so easy, not to mention their entertaining personalities! Sadly, some jokes were only in the English or German explanations, but luckily most of us understood both.
The Manatee County Island Branch Library is pleased to announce a series of exciting science programs during the month of February. “Here, There, Everywhere” combines library-produced and sponsored programs along with exhibits that were developed by the Chandra X-Ray Center at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, and supported by NASA.
In addition to the exhibits, the following four programs will take place during the month:
•ASTRONAUTS AND SPACE TRAVEL (children’s storytime) Tuesday, February 4th @ 10:00 AM
•BATS AT THE LIBRARY! (all ages) Saturday, February 15th @ 10:00 AM
•MOON AND STARS (children’s storytime) Tuesday, February 18th @ 10:00 AM
•CONSERVATION PROPERTIES (all ages) presented by the Manatee County Natural Resources Dept Thursday, February 27th @ 2:00 PM
Seating is free and will be available on a first come, first serve basis. No advance registration is required for any of the programs/events.

From wikipedia: Bloom (sometimes referred to as light bloom) is a computer graphics effect used in computer games and high dynamic range rendering (HDR) to reproduce an imaging artifact of real-world cameras. The effect produces fringes (or feathers) of light around very bright objects in an image.
This image shows my implementation of the bloom effect. Although you have to admit the bloom is too excessive in the image, but who cares? It looks cool, doesn't it?
The resulting real time image is post-processed through a GLSL shader, after which it is shown. I did it in a very simple way, I blurred the image, then multiplied the result with the original.
Carmelita Jeter returns to Cal State Dominguez Hills to speak at the Professor for a Day program. Carmelita gave a great lecture to a very lucky group of students.

Tomorrow's leaders must think and act as global citizens in order to address the challenges facing humanity. Broadly defined, global citizens are people who are consciously prepared to live and work in the complex interdependent society of the 21st century and contribute to improving the common global welfare of our planet and its inhabitants. The program aims to engage participating students as global citizens, helping them develop the knowledge, skills, values, and commitment to:
Understand the nature of globalization, including its positive and negative impacts around the world, and realize how it is transforming human society;
Appreciate the diversity of humanity in all of its manifestations, from local to global, and interact with different groups of people to address common concerns;
Recognize the critical global challenges that are compromising humanity's future and see how their complexity and interconnections make solutions increasingly difficult; and
Collaborate with different sets of stakeholders, by thinking globally and acting locally, to resolve these critical challenges and build a more equitable and sustainable world.
The session format includes lectures and discussions with an international faculty as well as formal and informal work in small groups. Topics addressed in plenary lectures and discussions include globalization and global responsibility; the social, economic, and political aspects of migration; the historical legacy of the Holocaust, human rights, humanitarian intervention; sustainable development; and the implications of the United States' influence around the world.
Participants will consider how these issues relate to their current situations and future personal, educational, and professional plans. They will also have the opportunity to develop projects and activities related to the session topic that can be implemented at their colleges and universities, in their local communities, and beyond.

The Medical Scholars Pipeline Program was created at the inception of the Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine as part of the school's core mission to create and support a diverse and inclusive learning community. The Pipeline Program shows the school's strong belief that the future physicians of this country need to reflect the growing diversity of our surrounding community and our country at large. This May, ITC senior Aphone Shin and PSLA at Fowler senior Zinad Abed will be heading to Albany to attend the Students Inside Albany program. They will be among 60 students from across the state who will get a first hand education about their state government. They'll be invited to tour the state Capitol, shadow Senators and Assembly members, participate in lectures and more! The trip is supported by the League of Women Voters of NYS and the League of Women Voters of the Syracuse Metro Area! Congratulations to both students!
