One of a series of adverts issued by BIP during the mid-1950s to show the possibilities of design using their plastics. This is quite a fascinating 'product' - a design for a constructional toy forming a plant. I wonder if it ever went onto production by any company or if it just remained a development?
I designed and constructed this chair in 10 weeks during the spring quarter of 2009 in my industrial design studio at the University of Cincinnati. I did everything from sketching the form to bending the wood.
It took me a long time but I think I finally figured out how to use the studio lights well. I was really happy with how these pictures turned out.

'Abloom' addresses the decline of honeybees and other key pollinators in an urban setting. It provides an artificial nectar based ink in the form of art work around the city in order to raise awareness within the public as well as stopping pollinators from starving.

A set of six glass, pyrex/JAJ, cups with plastic base and handles. These are really colorful items from the late 60's or early 70's.
The two orange ones have Pyrex marks on the glass and the plastic. The other four, which are pretty much identical (the two orange ones have a hole in the base of the plastic) but are marked JAJ. All made in England.
The burgundy color seems the odd one out. I did pick these from a basket full. The others either did not match or were discolored.
A very neat Specto-Royal cine projector.
I don't really know why but I keep picking up projectors at auctions. I don't bid high and these are not sought after - at least not at our local auction rooms!
Today I bid on a 1929 Kodak projector and won. I won't pick it up 'til Monday.

I actually have quite a liking for this clevery conceived corporate identity that was commissioned by the brewery group Watney Mann Ltd in 1966 from the Design Research Unit. At the time Watney Mann were, like many other major brewers, busy acquiring many smaller regional concerns, and the subject of a corporate identity for the design of disparate elements such as advertising, publicity, packaging and architecture was being considered by many such companies.
Watney Mann went to one of the greats - the Design Research Unit who at the time were probably at the peak of their powers - in the early to mid 1960s they, for example, undertook the rebranding of British Rail and did the design specification for London Transport's new Victoria line Underground. This project is credited to one of their founding partner's, Milner Gray, but also nicely credits other involved. Watney Mann, instead of sweeping away their regional subsidiaries and brands, realised that they had considerable local loyalties that could be retained and exploited. The clever trick was to present them in within a single 'look' across the whole group. The identity was also capable of a degree of adaptation, such as for differing styles of public house or property architecture, so as to be more sympathetic to a particular age or style of pub. The look was also carried across bottle labels, pump clips and vehicles. The graphic design and style was also suitably robust enough to speak to previous brewery styles without being too retro - a clever trick.
All in all it reminds me of the work we did at London Underground some years ago on design specifications for different thematic groups of stations - by company, architect or age so as to look sympathetic to each 'type' yet part of the Underground system and 'look'. Watney Mann staged an exhibition of their new look at the London Design Centre along with the Council of Industrial Design who were keen to showcase the approach. The exhibition design itself is a gem - even down to that street facade of public houses to show how the 'look' could be applied and much use of the various now long lost local brewery names.

As part of the required course knowledge pupils need to be able to outline the process involved in taking a square wooden blank and preparing it for turning between centres. These pictures depict that process chronologically.
Stage 1 * Preparation of wooden blank. Cut to size. Sand square. Mark across diagonals. Centre punch the centre point. Use spring dividers to mark circumference. Repeat on other end.
Stage 2 * Plane off corners down to circumference line. This takes cross section from square to octagon. This reduces force on cutting toll in initial prep of blank. Mount between fork [driven] centre and dead [or live ] centre at tailstock end. Apply grease a dead centre end. apply force from tailstock end to force fork into material at driven end. Adjust toolstock height to suit. Check for clearance.
Stage 3 * Roughout using scraper to diameter. Use combination of gouges and skew chisels to add beads and other decorative detailing as required. Ensure spindle speed is appropriate for material and cross section under consideration. Obey all safety instructions.

Community Kinetics began as a project that would explore the meaning of ‘sustainable development’ throughout land reform in rural Scotland, and in doing so became a support group and service to help residents along this path. What the project addresses specifically within this issue is
the mentality and engagement of those who really have the power to change Scotland’s rural landscape - local residents themselves! In this time of prosperous change, I believe that design can play a key role in supporting communities who will soon function autonomously. For the Machrihanish Airbase owners I have designed a live, constantly-updating community manifesto that gathers input from residents via workshops, pub quizzes and public displays. From the manifesto’s updates the volunteering members, responsible for making decisions for the area, can become better informed and connected to new groups of residents.
