Arlesey Town 2-0 Hitchin Town
Hitchin must wait another year for that overdue F A Cup run after going down to a 2-0 defeat on a wet and miserable evening to local rivals Arlesey. Just like Saturday the game was a clash of styles with Hitchin playing an attractive passing style while Arlesey were more direct relying on a strong defence and breaking quickly. Hitchin started on the front foot as Arlesey struggled to get possession. Callum Donnelly, Michael King and Robbie Burns each shot wide in the first 20 minutes while Rogan McGeorge headed over the bar from a Jamal Lowe cross before James Hatch shot wide from Arlesey's first attack.
As the half developed Arlesey came in to the game much more with Tahj Bell saving well from Hatch and Kim
Forsythe but Hitchin still created chances with Burns, Lowe and King all coming close. But the inability to turn possession in to goals is becoming costly and on 36 minutes Arlesey took the lead when Bell spilled a corner and Hatch scored from close range.
The second half was strangely flat with Hitchin never really building up any momentum. Chances still came but Ryan Frater and his other defenders proved very resolute with Nathan Abbey having an assured performance. Gary Wharton replaced Burns and his pace was an extra threat with Abbey making a good save from his shot just a minute after coming on. McGeorge also came close before Hatch landed the killer blow from close range with his second goal after72 minutes. Hitchin never gave up but Arlesey worked exceptionally hard to close down any sign of danger. King shot over the bar and Wharton was just wide before Donnelly brought the best save of the game from Abbey who tipped his lob over the bar. Sam Barker replaced Michael Noone and Simon Martin came on for Nick Burtenshaw late on but it was not to be Hitchin's night. There were late bookings for Jordan Ivey-Ward and McGeorge but referee Dave Bushell was impressive throughout.
So a disappointing evening but the quality of Hitchin's passing has been consistent throughout the early weeks of the season despite several injury problems causing disruption to the team. If only Hitchin can find a way to start taking the numerous chances being created this could be a season toremember.
