Every so often one experiences a lapse in concentration and puts his trust in a system that appears to be too good to be true. To accompany Life in the UK / Balance of Probabilities, Zeynep Ozler and Melih Ozsoz from the Economic Development Foundation (IKV) in Turkey shared their research on the VISA Hotline Project alongside Tony Venables from the European Citizen Action Service (ECAS), Brussels.
Raising awareness of the VISA issue as a major barrier to the fundamental right of free movement of Turkish citizens, the speakers highlighted the human experience within this pertinently political issue.
I had a two hour presentation/meeting to attend today. I figured since it was after lunch, there was high probability that I would get drowsy during this time, so I decided to get something from Uwajimaya to chew on. I was gonna get some nuts, but then these chips caught my eye and so I decided to get them. I had never heard of "Cheddar Beer" chips. It was almost meeting time, so I didn't have much time to think about it. All the Kettle Chips flavors I had tried before were good, cheddar is good, and beer is good. Sounds like a winning combination right? In fact, the bag itself says it's "a match made in heaven."
Well... let me tell you, it's not a match made in heaven. I think this is what Leonidas meant in 300 when he said, "tonight we dine in hell!" Actually, it's not that bad, but I definitely wouldn't recommend it. I think the creators must have had some cheddar chips while getting drunk off beer and thought it tasted really good. The problem is, when you're drunk, anything tastes good! Except for, maybe these chips.

With the vast options that are available in the field of product designing I faced quite a challenge in deciding the topic for my thesis. I, also, wanted to make a conscious effort in selecting a topic that I could pursue professionally after my degree.
My first objective was to try something, which is relatively under-explored in Pakistan and steer clear from the run-of-the-mill ideas.
A “futuristic” theme seemed perfect because it has just that edge that I wanted in my work. Immensely experimental and completely new, it has provided me the challenge to test my creative skills as well as balancing practicality with some fun.
I have always been a technology fanatic, keeping up with the latest gadgetry, watching sci-fi films, and reading up on a lot of fiction. I also have considerable experience in filmmaking, having assisted and directed several AD Films, Art Direction, Documentaries, Short-plays, and Music videos. These experiences have enhanced my interest and given me insight in this topic and therefore I think that I will be able to do justice to it. I am also keen on continuing this work afterwards.

Fig. 80 (p. 217) - Buffon is remembered for a probability experiment known as Buffon’s Needle. The problem was first stated in 1777. The story goes that Buffon calculated pi by trowing some French stick loaves over his shoulder onto a tiled floor and counted the number of times the loaves covered the lines between the tiles.
A more practical form involves the dropping of a random number of needles (or toothpicks) on a lined sheet of paper and determining the probability of the needle crosses one of the lines on the page. The lengths of the needles/toothpicks and the distance between the lines play a role in the theoretical discussion of this matter (SCHROEDER, 1974), but the outcome will always approximate pi. Pi can be calculated from the needle drops by multiplying the number of drops by two and divide the outcome by the number of hits: 2 (total drops) / (number of hits) = pi (approximately).
Two parallel lines indicate a tri-fold world, which is invaded by a multitude (the French loaves or pins). The probability of crossing a line (visibility) is a value derived from a cyclic environment (pi). It is relevant in the history of division thinking, because it bridged a gap between the linear (Third) and the circular (Fourth Quadrant) vision.

Based on probability alone Self-portrait with nose tube was unlikely to win the Archibald Prize. Awarded 103 times, Reg would have had more chance of winning it if he was a woman than if he'd entered a self-portrait. Although we are post-COVID, when this scene developed, the COVID-era and lockdown generated plenty of opportunities for painters to be their own subjects. I know of one fine example where the painter and the sitter put together a fine self-portrait, only to be rejected, given a "highly commended", and became an entry on the list of women who paint self-portraits and don't win the prize.
You might know Reg Mombassa as Chris O'Doherty, the New Zealand born artist, graphic designer, musician and cameo actor from his work on album covers and prints on Mambo clothing. As challenging as this piece is I am taken by its lustre — somewhere between waxy and opalescent — honesty and vulnerability. It's a brave work, and at roughly 40x30cm, it draws you in before you really see it. Reg was recovering from some pretty serious surgery when he made a record of the occasion, which in turn became his portrait.
I was moved by this piece, and so I have posted it here. True, it didn't win. That's not the point. I think the panel has made another error in judgement. I won't tell you why I think that, and you might think I have erred. But that's how art works, even if the panel — subject to different forces — fails to agree with me.

The Probability Engine: Permafrost and the Last Piece of Antarctic Ice (2024) draws inspiration from studies predicting that a 1.5°C increase in global warming could trigger several global tipping points. This series of artworks envisions a machine allowing audiences to explore potential futures of climate disasters and justice. Three sculptures, 3D printed from recycled materials, form the core of this work. Additionally, an augmented reality app depicts the effects of permafrost loss and explores potential solutions. Among the envisioned futures is the melting of boreal permafrost, covering much of Yukon, the Northwest Territories, and parts of northern Manitoba, Ontario, and Quebec. Scientists fear abrupt permafrost thawing, releasing huge amounts of currently frozen methane into the atmosphere. The project highlights tipping points and their consequences, such as Antarctic ice melting leading to sea-level rise. Collaborating with scientific publications, micha cárdenas and her team have created an immersive installation, making the realities of frozen landscapes and our interdependence tangible, particularly for those of us living in southern regions. The poems in the app make connections between genocide in Gaza, climate change and decolonization.

I think that AI image generation is similar in many ways to photography. The camera itself handles all the fine details, but the photographer is in charge of curating the types of images that will be created.
Ultimately, it is all about maximizing the probability that something good will be created.
This is very similar to AI image generation, in terms of the skills involved and what the human does vs. what the machine does.
You can't compare AI image generation to the process of actually making these images from scratch with 3D software or paint/pencils, where the human controls every detail.
However, I think the process really is very similar to that of photography, as I made the case for above. I think that DALL-E 3 is by far the most powerful AI image generation tool currently available.

The Whole Lightning Bolt
Pointing a camera where a bolt had just hit has a good probability that a repeat performance is in order. It took me a second to zoom into where I thought the last strike was based on the residual image left on my retina . So I moved the camera, got it all set up just in time Flash…1,2,3,4 BOOOOM…. So not quite a mile just over the hill we call “Dobie” (don’t ask me why it’s called that).
It’s not too often I get a really large (OK, huge) bolt like this completely on the frame without cropping down a larger image. This is a full frame non-cropped image though. I couldn’t have centered it better if I knew ahead of time where it was going to be. Well I still had that ghost image from that last flash lol.
There was a whole series of storms that moved through this evening. Each had it’s own character and lighting into sunset. I worked each and every one till the lightning and lighting subsided. There were some amazing captures from this timeline . I spent over 3 hours with this storm train. That is 1000 to 1500 image stuff. This will take a while to sort it all out. I had two cameras on lightning trigger and others free handed. I can run up to three cameras but it get’s to resemble a rats nest on my truck window.

Forum was exploring practices of organising and supporting residency programmes, examining their role as hubs for inter-local and inter-cultural exchange. It gathered cultural professionals and artists from different fields of contemporary art, as well as decision-makers and experts. It provided an opportunity to discuss and critically reflect on current practices and support models, to learn from each other and to share ideas on how residency programmes can be improved in order to resonate better with current and future cultural and social dynamics. Forum aimed to contribute to the development of cultural policies that would provide an adequate support for such programmes in Croatia and other European countries that share similar challenges. Programme of the Forum consisted of working sessions, panel discussions, conversations and presentations.
