It seems I'm having some teething troubles with my new Therm-App Pro. Is isn't showing the full resolution on the screen, although bizarrely it does record full 640x480 video.

I haven't been posting much about my new toy because I had a feeling there was something not quite right. Sure, it has a much better noise performance than the regular Therm-App but the resolution didn't seem to have increased and the image seemed off-centre, somehow. In particular, when I used the 6.8mm lens I was seeing pronounced vignetting (masking) of one corner of the image - and that was plain wrong: unless there is some gross mechanical misalignment or lens damage, vignetting should be more or less the same in each corner.

I set out to do some rigorous comparisons between the Therm-App 8.7Hz, my upgraded-to-25Hz camera, and the new Therm-App Pro. Mostly, the results showed that the two earlier cameras had the same field of view as the newer camera. That didn't seem right, because the Pro's sensor is physically larger than that of the others - it has the same pixel size, 17µm, but many more pixels, so the sensor is 640/388 wider and 480/288 taller than its brethren. This should result in a wider field of view, in much the same way as crop-sensor DSLRs have a focal length 'conversion factor' of about 1.5 or 1.6 compared to a full-frame 35mm camera.

After a full day of experiments I finally worked out that the app is only displaying a 384 x 288 window from the 640 x 480 sensor. Still images are also upscaled from that size when they're saved.

The key to finding out what was happening was that, by chance, when I was testing the Pro in two similar, but slightly different arrangements with the same lens and subject I accidentally recorded some video instead of still images. 'No problem', I thought, 'I can just take a still from the video, or maybe use Registax or similar to do some noise reduction'. Imaging my surprise when I discovered that the video was much wider angle than the stills!

To prove it one way or the other I set up a camera pointing at the screen of the phone running the Therm-App, set both recording, went into the field of view and waved my arms. When I played the videos back I could clearly see that the thermal recording had included a great deal that was missing from the onscreen display. And the vignetting was equal at each corner of the video, further indicating that everything was OK.

I have communicated these results to Opgal (Therm-App). I expect the cure will be a relatively simple update to the app: it's clear that full resolution video is coming out of the Therm-App Pro, but it just isn't being displayed properly.

Once this is all sorted out I'll start pointing the camera at things properly!

Belle Campground, Joshua Tree National Park.

My campsite here was mostly good. Secluded, cool rocks, got the morning sun, and even had my own Joshua tree, pitiful as it was.

The one negative was a big one, although it wasn't a fault of the site. When I camp now I'm checking out the weather forecast for my exact location nearly every day starting at least a couple of weeks before my arrival. It might be that it wasn't that easy in 2004, or I might just have expected "Southern California... warm", which would have been very wrong in this case. Well, at least as far as the nighttime was concerned.

I remember a ranger telling me my first morning there that the temperature had dropped to 28° the night before. I thought it must have been even colder in camp because my water jug (seen on the tarp) was frozen solid when I got up, and I was just about as cold myself. It was a long night. I stuck it out for one more night, which wasn't quite as cold, and then left Joshua Tree, forgoing the final two nights of my reservation.

Should have followed the Boy Scout motto. I've since tented in as cold or even colder temperatures without problem.

Join this year's Pro-Choice Presence!

May 13 2010

Every year church groups, religious clubs and Catholic school students gather to protest womens' reproductive freedom.

I was able to join a peaceful, Pro-Choice counter-protest. We were allowed to stand on the sidewalk while the 'March for Life' went by. A row of bike Police in flourescent lime jackets stood between we 36 - 45 Pro-Choicers and 8,000+ 'Pro-Life' marchers.

This video highlights one of the many reasons why I believe so much in reproductive freedom and justice.
