The Castle
Since ancient times, man has searched for sites on mountaintops to construct fortresses from which land and territory can be controlled. In Cardona the geographic position of the castle is ideal. It defended access to the salt quarry and it provides a privileged view of the Cardener River’s valleys. Cardona Castle sits on a mountaintop and overlooks the Cardener River’s main basin. It was home to the lords of Cardona from the 11th to 15th centuries. The area is divided into two halves; the lords’ quarters and the area of the Canonical San Vicenç Church. The Minyona Tower, the Ducal Courtyard, the castle’s bastions and the great view over the salt basin are well worth a visit.
Cardona Castle is an excellent example of a military fortification as it exemplifies the evolution of military arts from the Middle Ages up to present-day. The castle was home to one of the country’s most prominent noble dynasties, and the defence of the salt quarry meant that its fortification was impregnable. During the War of Spanish Succession (1711-1714), it proved itself to be a remarkable fortification as it was the last fortress to surrender to Felip V.
As for the Canonical Sant Vicenç Church, it is a Unitarian work dating back to the 11th century. It was consecrated between the years 1029 and 1040. It is a magnificent example of Romanesque architecture. There is a basilica with three naves completed by a transept that has three adjoining semicircular apses. The central altarpiece is presided by a wide presbytery that is covered by a semicircular barrel vault. Under the presbytery there is a crypt that takes up the entire presbyterial space and the central apse. There are also some notable tombs and pantheons, in particular those belonging to Duke Ferran I and Count Joan Ramon Folc I.
Salt Mountain
Cardona’s Salt Mountain Cultural Park is located at an old mine called Mina Nieves. The park provides visitors with an opportunity to see Cardona’s saline outcrops and its outstanding natural resources and mineral heritage, which makes this area a truly unique place in the world. Geology, mineralogy, botany and history come together here in a place where man has exploited rock salt since Neolithic times until the industrial age.
Visitors are welcome at the Mina Nieves, which was one of the most important potash salt mines in Europe until 1990. Here visitors can behold a natural wonder, namely the Salt Mountain which is a diapir situated in the Vall Salina, the salt basin. During the tour, visitors can go to the museographic area and see two mining shafts (called Alberto and Maria Teresa) and have a look at machinery that was used in one of the shafts. Throughout the tour you will travel in a special vehicle that will take you down an 86-metre slope into the salt basin. Once you get to the Vall Salina, you will be able to appreciate and admire the incredible salt formation; la Muntanya de Sal, the Salt Mountain. At this point, visitors will be provided with mining helmets and begin their tour inside the mountain. You will be taken through 500m of galleries where you can view spectacular stalactites and stalagmites as well as various salt seams of sodium, potassium and magnesium.

I was privileged to be a guest at a friend's wedding at the end of last year. my camera was invited as well, but i was not the big chief of picturetakingness. I could just relax.
Congrats to Riek and Iza ;)
At the foot of the apse side walls are two famous mosaic panels, completed in 547. On viewer left (but privileged right side from perspective of Christ in apse) is a mosaic depicting the East Roman Emperor Justinian I, clad in Tyrian purple with a golden halo, standing next to court officials, generals Belisarius and Narses, Bishop Maximian, palatinae guards and deacons. The halo around his head gives him the same aspect as Christ in the dome of the apse, but is part of the tradition of rendering the imperial family with haloes described by Ernst Kantorowicz in The King's Two Bodies. Justinian himself stands in the middle, with soldiers on his right and clergy on his left, emphasizing that Justinian is the leader of both church and state of his empire. The later insertion of Bishop Maximian's name above his head suggests that the mosaic may have been modified in 547, replacing the representation of the prior bishop with that of Maximian's.
The gold background of the mosaic perhaps shows that Justinian and his entourage are inside the church. The figures are placed in a V shape; Justinian is placed in the front and in the middle to show his importance with Bishop Maximian on his left and lesser individuals being placed behind them. This placement can be seen through the overlapping feet of the individuals present in the mosaic.
On the opposite wall, the more elaborate panel shows Empress Theodora solemn and formal, with a golden halo, crown and jewels, and a group of court women as well as eunuchs. The Empress holds the Eucharistic vessel for the Precious Blood, and her panel differs from that of Justinian in having a more complex background, with a fountain, cupola, and lavish hangings. They are adorned with intricately patterned textiles, possibly luxurious silks imported from the Sassanian Persian Empire. One scholar has argued that Theodora was depicted after her death in 548, but that theory has not been widely accepted due to other evidence that the mosaics were completed by 547 when the church was consecrated. This is the only certain image of the Empress Theodora, and stands in contrast to her depiction in some of the political rhetoric of the era.

Another shot clogging up my hard drive. Taken on the astonishing sunrise I was privileged to witness from Seaham beach earlier in the year.
A couple of weeks ago, we were privileged to be able to provide the lighting for the NFL owners party during the week of the Superbowl in Tampa. On the way to meet the crew and begin our load in, I just had to stop and look behind me as this scene was unfolding in the Florida sky. Below are a few images that I captured of the room, details, and show. Enjoy :)

The Northern Lights have always fascinated me, and I feel so privileged that I had a second opportunity to photograph them on this trip. The aurora was blasting across the night sky on many occasions, sometimes obscured by cloud cover... but on clear nights the dancing sky was beautiful to watch. This is one frame that I've edited out of a time-lapse sequence.
This was shot with a fisheye lens, and the horizon line was corrected using various tools in Photoshop (mostly Warp and Liquify). I enjoy playing with the colours and details in photographs like this, bringing out the blues in the night sky without affecting the greens, all the while trying to bring out the subtle purple tones mixed in between.
These displays can be somewhat surreal to people who don't live in this region, or ordinary occurrences that are taken for granted by those that see them frequently. Even to those people who see these dancing lights as commonplace, these photos can still capture a certain "magic" that the human eye doesn't perceive.
Part of that has to do with perspective, and a 180 degree view from a fisheye lens is helpful. In my case, I had to work carefully with my lens as it was misbehaving and the aperture blades would get stuck. It's in for repairs now, but I had to find a solution in the field - shooting wide open at F/2.8 solved the problem, which in turn allows me to shoot at a faster frame-rate and freeze the dancing lights in place. F/2.8 is usually not a common aperture for landscape photographers, but fisheye lenses have an inherently greater depth of field at any given aperture.
I've only just begun digging though images that I've photographed in the past month, but I can already tell you that my travels were well worth it. :)
I was very privileged to have been asked to take some photos for the latest edition of Adore Magazine by Suemomo. I knew straight away Bella would be my model. Here are my 5 favourites.

I was lucky and privileged to see one of the two Bald Eagles that hang out at one of my sister regional parks. He just sat there for awhile, tried out another tree for another while, and then he left. So did I, after I thanked him very much.
These fox cubs (sometimes four of them & their mother) came out into the field nearly every evening when we stayed in Kent. I have to say it was one of the highlights of my life to be able to sit quietly & watch them. I felt so privileged!!!
It's hard work - very, being a geography and geology teacher and a house parent... But I do love it, I feel extremely privileged to hold the position I do, and to meet the people I meet. Some days I'm lucky enough to call places like this my classroom...
I felt privileged to catch this moment when a stag decided to swim the lake to confront another stag. When he first stepped into the water it didn't look that deep, but his feet were definitely not touching bottom once he got out to the middle.
Inside the Mathematics Institute at Oxford. We were privileged to be given a tour of this extraordinary building. Very Escher like in it's communications corridors - except they all go somewhere! Full of light which is channelled to the different floors via glass crystal shaped structures which give fabulous reflections. It is an amazing structure. What a place for some of the best brains to flourish!!!
The 22 y/o Supremely confident (and not a little arrogant) extremely competitive, ultra- privileged Lance Reventllow wanted to race. With Mommy's deep pockets, he simply hired the best of the best in LA at the time (such legends as hot rodders Warren Olson, Dick Troutman, Tom Barnes and Chuck Daigh. ) and they whipped together the best looking and best performing racer in the US.
His full name was Lawrence Graf von Haugwitz-Hardenberg-Reventlow, but he went by Lance. The son of Woolworth heiress Barbara Hutton and one of her seven husbands, Count Kurt von Haugwitz-Hardenberg-Reventlow, Lance was twice married to actresses: Jill St. John and ex-Mouseketeer, Cheryl Holdridge.
After a rocky start, they went on to clean house in American racing, several times beating the big Ferraris, the culmination coming at the 1958 Riverside Grand Prix, when small block Chevy engine genius, and gifted driver Daigh beat Phill Hill who was driving the big Ferrari 412 MI.
And it is gorgeous to boot. This is Chassis 003 and is right hand drive to keep the driver on the inside of curves in our generally counter-clock wise race tracks.
Very privileged indeed to be taken to see this rare beauty whilst on holidays. I managed to see them on three separate occasions, a real treat.
We were privileged to once again see these Leopards.
Kabosso and her cub { Judy named Koko as he has not been named in Kenya} were once again seen on the move and quickly surrounded by jeeps. It was dusk but we got some lovely views
Golden boy who sired the cub was also seen on the move going in and out of the bush and ravine . When this happens the guides anticipate where they may bee seen and head over to hopefully get a good sighting spot. We were hemmed by other jeeps and needed to wait until they moved off.
We choose to sit and wait and were rewarded when Golden boy come out of the bush towards us. He walked around the jeep picked up and sent some p- mail before once again going into the bush.
I was privileged to see and photograph this Goshawk in the wild. I spent around 30mins watching this bird go about its business. Having this image of it plucking a small bird was the highlight for me...
I was privileged to be taken on a guided tour of the wildlife and old ruins of the Cairngorm National Park by Steve yesterday.
The camera soon started to fill with (rather poor) images of White Tailed Eagle, Perigrine Falcon, numerous Buzzards, Lapwings, Geese, Oystercatchers, Partridge and Stags; along with shots of bothies, mills, abandoned farmhouses and castles.
The photography ended (twice) with a sunset shoot at Corgarff Castle.
Thanks for the Grand Tour Steve :-)
Nankeen kestrels mating, Callum Brae, ACT, September, 2011.
I was privileged to be able to visit this site regularly in the spring of 2011, and photographically document the entire breeding and rearing process of this pair.
By this day, 21st September, I had learnt enough about their calls and habits to anticipate this event. The female would fly to a suitable branch and then call the male. He would fly over and land on her back.
They produced three chicks, one of which was weak and did not survive more than a couple of days after leaving the nest.
The diet consisted mainly of spiders (brought by Mum) and mice (brought by Dad).
I openly admit to blurring the leafy/twiggy background in order to let the viewer fully appreciate the beauty of these magnificent birds.

I was privileged to attend trials on the Magny-Cours ring. It was my first time on a race ring, and I must say I had a blast, despite the cold and rainy weather. Hope you will enjoy the pictures.
Located in the center of Seville, near the Cathedral and right at the entrance to the Santa Cruz neighborhood.
One of the liveliest bars in Seville both for its privileged location and for its tradition and with the advantage that from its terrace near the Giralda we can enjoy the typically Sevillian atmosphere.

These birds are pretty difficult to approach. They are very spooky but how beautiful! We do not have them on Vancouver Island so I was extremely happy and privileged to photograph them last Summer while travelling in Saskatchewan.
I was privileged to watch this Merlin, a jay-sized falcon also known as a "pigeon hawk", for awhile. It was, I think, single-handedly trying to rid the marsh of dragonflies. Picked 'em apart, one piece at a time, head first...
A Landmark Repurposed celebrates the historic building that the Frist Art Museum is privileged to occupy—Nashville’s former main post office.
Commemorating the Frist’s 20th anniversary, this reimagined exhibition with updated design and expanded narrative highlights the building’s role as a civic institution, from its creation as the city’s main post office in 1934 to its reopening as an art museum on April 8, 2001. Through archival images, architectural drawings, “Then and Now” photographs, news clippings, and original planning documents, guests will learn about the building’s distinctive architectural styles, as well as how historical events affected the construction and function of the post office.
I have been truly privileged over the years to have close contact with spinner dolphins in the wild and on their terms. Each encounter is unique and wonderful. i am grateful for being able to live a life I could never have imagined.
Welcome to Saint Basil Parish, located in the heart of central Brantford just off the main street of Brant Ave. Saint Basil's has been located on Palace St since 1842 and the current church building was completed in 1875 after almost ten years of construction. Designed in the English Gothic Revival Style, Saint Basil's is privileged to be one of the most beautiful Catholic churches in the area with her sweeping vaulted ceilings and the beautiful stained glass windows that were installed in 1937. Saint Basil's is also home to a massive pipe organ built in Woodstock, Ontario by The Warren Organ Co and installed in 1909 in a special design to accommodate the wonderful Rose Window on the south wall.
Baltimore Orioles Return: “Explored Image”: Each year we are privileged to have a plentiful supply of Orioles at our woodland home. Shortly after returning this year they disappeared as females began nest building. Their nest is a tightly woven pouch located on the end of a branch, hanging down on the underside. Trees such as cottonwoods, maples, willows or apple are regularly selected, with the nest usually located (23 to 30 ft) above the ground. The female lays three to seven eggs, with the norm being around four. The eggs are pale gray to bluish white. While nesting the adults will disappear for 2-3 weeks from feeders preferring protein of insects over seeds or fruit. Today the adults and their young returned to our feeders for cut oranges and grape jelly again. We go through over 16 oz of grape jelly per day keeping them and ourselves happy all summer. Get your feeders out......and keep plenty of "Grape Jelly" on hand. They will come.....if you are consistent.
Barn Owl, Norfolk.
I was privileged yesterday morning to not only see but get images of 4 different Barn Owls. I went home with over 100 shots which usually only ever happens when photographing Kingfishers. This is Barn Owl number 3 having a shake down after hunting in wet vegetation this morning. .
We are privileged to have with us a couple from Calgary who arrived today and because we are in and out, I will not be on line for most of a week. I am sorry about that but really going to enjoy the time with our friends. Tomorrow we go to Cape Tribulation. I won't post for another week.
*** Some folk have made me a Contact in their list in the past week, and I have not yet responded. Sorry about that but it will have to wait for a week longer to add you. Please bear with me.
This photo is of Cape Tribulation and taken from the headland overlooking the pandanus pines growing in the tough basalt cliff face. It is looking out to the Coral Sea where the Great Barrier Reef is found.
Have a happy Flickering while I am not online. Please send me an email if you want and I will respond when I am on next.
