A garden should make you feel you've entered privileged space -- a place not just set apart but reverberant -- and it seems to me that, to achieve this, the gardener must put some kind of twist on the existing landscape, turn its prose into something nearer poetry.
-- Michael Pollan
Obviously a garden is not the wilderness but an assembly of shapes, most of them living, that owes some share of its composition, it’s appearance, to human design and effort, human conventions and convenience, and the human pursuit of that elusive, indefinable harmony that we call beauty. It has a life of its own, an intricate, willful, secret life, as any gardener knows. It is only the humans in it who think of it as a garden. But a garden is a relationship, which is one of the countless reasons why it is never finished.

I consider myself quite privileged that I had the opportunity - on more than one occasion - to witness UP 6936 operating on special trains on the UP. This even includes a couple occasions I saw it run on the Moffat. While I am glad that it is going to be maintained at the Railroading Heritage of Midwest America museum in Silvas, IL, I am sad that it will no longer roam free on throughout UP's system.

In Spring 2018, I was privileged to enjoy precious moments as this loving pair of American Avocets did the deal. I wrote before what a beautiful act it was as she teased him, he showed off, they did some beak interaction, finally he mounted her, then they sealed the deal with some more beak crossing. I was completely fascinated, a little embarrassed I'd watched their private moment, but I did whisper "thank you" for their allowing me to share.
Did I mention it was cold and rainy there on that morning, from the "car blind", Bear River Bird Refuge, UT.

"I don't think old photographers retire .... they just go out of focus" - Lord Lichfield
Photographer Lord Lichfield dies
Friday, 11 November 2005
Royal photographer Lord Lichfield has died at the age of 66 after suffering a major stroke.
The Queen was among the first to pay tribute to Lord Lichfield, saying she was "deeply saddened" at the news.
Lord Lichfield was the Queen's first cousin once removed and was the official photographer at the wedding of the Prince of Wales to Diana.
He was being treated in the stroke unit at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford after falling ill.
The renowned photographer had been staying in the area with friends when he suffered a stroke. He died at 0400 GMT on Friday.
A Buckingham Palace spokeswoman said: "It's a private matter. The Queen is deeply saddened and will be sending private condolences."
Lord Lichfield - who inherited the earldom of Lichfield in Staffordshire from his grandfather - has often been asked by the royals to take their official portraits.
He photographed the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh for her Golden Jubilee in 2002.
In July 1981, he took the official wedding photographs for the Prince of Wales and Lady Diana Spencer.
"He wasn't complicated, he wasn't pretentious, he wasn't an intellectual, he just loved making beautiful images" - Geordie Greig, Tatler editor.
Tatler editor Geordie Greig said Lord Lichfield was an "old-fashioned gentleman" whose best work had been his shots of the wedding.
"The royal wedding was spectacularly memorable, he got the intimacy of the Royal Family, he got that fairytale magic.
"There was a sort of almost Hollywood magic dust spread throughout that shoot and the world enjoyed it.
"He wasn't complicated, he wasn't pretentious, he wasn't an intellectual, he just loved making beautiful images."
Former royal press secretary Dickie Arbiter said Lord Lichfield had been very close to the Royal Family and was noted for the easy way he handled them during shoots, using a whistle to marshal guests at the wedding of Charles and Diana.
"One year, we were shooting a Christmas card at Windsor Castle it was all over in about 15 minutes, he was almost a one-shot man, he would get it perfect the first time."
Baroness Thatcher, whose recent 80th birthday photos were taken by Lord Lichfield, said: "Patrick Lichfield was not only one of the most talented and professional of photographers, he was also an absolute delight to sit for.
"Always courteous and considerate, he had a rare skill which is now sadly gone."
Friend and photographer Terry O'Neill said Lord Lichfield's style was always spontaneous.
"He did go for the moment. He was instinctive. It was part of his nature."
He remembered that the aristocrat liked to be viewed as "one of the chaps".
In a career spanning 40 years, Lord Lichfield worked for Vogue and photographed many stars, including Sixties singer Marsha Hunt, Michael Caine and Joanna Lumley.
As well as editorial photography, he worked on advertising commissions across several industries, including fashion, tobacco and pharmaceuticals.
He was recently commissioned by the British Tourist Authority, and was involved in Hot Shots, a television series for Discovery Real Time in which amateur photographers are taught by professionals.
Interviewed in October by the BBC News website, he told reporter Caroline Briggs: "Remember that the person you are photographing is 50% of the portrait and you are the other 50%.
"You need the model as much as he or she needs you. If they don't want to help you, it will be a very dull picture."
Lord Lichfield's long-term partner was Lady Annunziata Asquith, and he had had three children with ex-wife Lady Leonora Grosvenor - a son, Tom, and two daughters, Rose and Eloise.
Lord Lichfield : BBC News Website Obituary
Friday, 11 November 2005
Lord Lichfield stretched beyond his privileged upbringing to become a world-renowned photographer.
He first used a camera at the age of seven, taking pictures of his family, pets and scenes at his beloved home, the stately Shugborough Hall in Staffordshire.
He attended Harrow School, and took his first pictures of the Queen as he played cricket against Eton.
While his upbringing was aristocratic, Lichfield's great passion for photography carried him far beyond any blue-blooded barriers, and through an extremely successful 40-year career.
The son of Viscount Anson and Princess Anne of Denmark, Patrick Lichfield - the 5th Earl of Lichfield - was the Queen's first cousin once removed.
He made his break into photography in 1962, after leaving the Grenadier Guards.
Starting out as a photographer's assistant on £3 a week, he made the most of his showbusiness and aristocratic connections, snapping everybody from Mick and Bianca Jagger on their wedding day to the Duke and Duchess of Windsor in exile.
Lichfield's memory of the latter encounter was of deliberately falling off his chair to force smiles out of his straight-faced subjects. The result got him a contract with Vogue magazine.
He also worked for a range of other newspapers and magazines, including Life.
One of his most iconic images, which he recently recreated, was the naked pose of the singer Marsha Hunt, complete with a huge afro hairdo for the musical Hair.
Another was Swinging London, which featured Roman Polanski, David Hockney and Lady Antonia Fraser. Other famous subjects included Michael Caine, Joanna Lumley and a host of 1960s glitterati.
His long career was celebrated two years ago with an exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery, and he was awarded fellowships of both the British Institute of Professional Photographers and the Royal Photographic Society.
Most recently, he took a special set of pictures of Baroness Thatcher to mark her 80th birthday.
His position and profession came together most famously in July 1981, when he took the official wedding photographs of the Prince and Princess of Wales, before sitting down to the wedding feast with hundreds of other royals.
From his studio in north Kensington, Lichfield became renowned the world over for his skill with the lens, and personally admired for his straightforward manner.
Although he was one the official photographers of the Queen's Golden Jubilee, he liked being addressed as plain Patrick Lichfield and was at his happiest poring over shots in his studio.
A self-professed "spiv" and admirer of feminine beauty, one of Lichfield's favourite commissions was the famous Unipart calendar, shot in glamorous locations all over the world with an emphasis on stunning models.
Lichfield admitted to having relationships with many of his pretty subjects but, away from the camera, he found companionship in his own well-bred circle.
He was married for 11 years to Lady Leonora Grosvenor, sister of the Duke of Westminster, with whom he had three children.
His most recent partner was the biographer, Lady Annunziata Asquith.
Like the late Princess Margaret, he often took refuge on the Caribbean island of Mustique. It was at his holiday home there in 1992 that he suffered a very bad fall, from which he had difficulty recovering.
Despite this, he continued to work throughout his life, becoming a champion of the digital revolution, and attending to the photography that he described as his "calling".
As he got older, Lord Lichfield reflected on his legacy, wondering what he would leave behind.
Acknowledging his pedigree, he was delighted that Shugborough was smaller but better managed. But he always added: "There are the pictures."

Due to the privileged position of Terranova di Pollino compared to all the excursion itineraries in the Pollino National Park, all outdoor enthusiasts are able to satisfy their passions.
Whether you choose to proceed on foot, with the appropriate trekking gear, or mountain biking, breathtaking scenery is guaranteed in the Casa del Conte area, starting from the urban center of Terranova, along a steep road around 1000 meters.
The effort that accompanies these paths is rewarded by unparalleled emotions, such as the one you feel when you reach Timpa Falconare, an imposing rock that dominates the whole surrounding valley and offers enthusiasts the possibility of facing mountaineering ascents on its high walls up to 300 meters.
Another point of naturalistic interest is the Lago della Duglia, right at the foot of the Serra di Crispo. Once here you can admire enchanting forests of beech and silver fir, the latter can reach and, in some cases, exceed 30 meters in height, in the Iannace Plan.
At this point, half an hour walk, we find ourselves right in front of the great "door" of Pollino. Natural beauties and surprises for the soul do not cease to chase for those who decide to fix the start of their excursion in Terranova di Pollino, this time encroaching in Calabria, towards the Timpa San Lorenzo, near which opens the chasm of the Gorges del Raganello, a spectacular canyon along which you can practice rafting and canyoning.
The so-called Ponte del Diavolo is also very spectacular, overlooking a precipice.
We were privileged to witness this pair of Bald Eagles engage in courtship / coupling behaviors for the better part of an hour. She landed on the branch, he circled. Then he landed next to her and they sat together, looked at one another and at their surroundings. Then he took off and circled and flew off over the lake for about 5-10 minutes. When he returned, he landed to her right, as above. As he was coming in to land, she began to bow down and then as he actually landed, she raised her left wing as he screeched at her. This went on for about 15-30 seconds. Then they began to screech together for another 15-30 seconds. It was fascinating to watch and photograph. We watched this pair last year at the same nesting site but never got to see this intricate interaction! I should say, I believe it's the same pair as we were just 100 yards from the nest and no other eagles were sited all afternoon. Wonderful day and awesome learning experience!
History of the Cathedral
The Duomo, besides being an artistic monument, is a privileged place of prayer. The Cathedral is strongly linked to memory and to the Magisterium of the Bishops who have succeeded to the Throne of St. Ambrose and to the history of the millions of faithful who collect their thoughts there each year to celebrate the Sacred Mysteries.
The Cathedral is the Mother Church of the Diocese, which has a symbolic exemplary function both with regard to the life of religion in the city, and with regard to diocesan activity. Liturgical activity is the true essence of the Cathedral: the Duomo is the heart of liturgical tradition which, referring to the figure of St. Ambrose, is an expression of the tangible form with which the apostolic tradition is deeply rooted and has developed over the centuries in the Church of Milan. In the Duomo, daily liturgical worship is practiced in many different forms: not only celebrations of the Eucharist, but also, because of the constant presence of the Metropolitan Chapter, the Liturgy of the Hours, as preparation for and prolongation of the Eucharist.
Particular attention is paid to Eucharistic Adoration, the Liturgy of the Word, celebration of the Sacrament of Reconciliation and to the most genuine and sincere forms of “popular piety”, such as reciting of the Rosary and, during Lent, the practice of the Stations of the Cross. Liturgical worship by the faithful is the essence of the Cathedral which, in all of its expressions, above all through the countless works of art that it has preserved for centuries, is required to live and give testimony in the very heart of the city to faithfulness to Christ's Gospel.

We were privileged to have a close view of this exquisitely coloured bird showing us the full glory of its plumage.
Contrary to what we imagined, Terceira does not have many lighthouses, nor are they imposing, even in privileged locations.
According to our small research, there were relevant lighthouses on the island, namely those of Angra and Praia da Vitória. However, they were destroyed in the great earthquakes, and the need to rebuild similar structures no longer existed due to technological advances. The Serreta lighthouse was also damaged by seismic activity, and today a small lighthouse stands in its place.
This Contendas Lighthouse, near the small town of São Sebastião, is an exception. With its traditional appearance in a beautiful area with vast landscapes, it enchanted us, as was expected.
*
Terranova occupies a privileged position with respect to all the hiking trails to the heart of the Pollino National Park . As soon as you leave the city center, the road that climbs around 1000 meters towards the town of Casa del Conte offers almost immediately breathtaking scenery.
Overcoming, in fact, the ancient barrier on the current course of the Sarmento in which in geological times, due to natural causes, obtained that fissure in the limestone rock that constitutes the gorge called the Garavina (through which the waters of the small glacial lake flowed the whose background is now occupied by the houses of the district called Paraturo , part of the village of Casa del Conte), you can admire this natural spectacle that is only the first taste of the scenarios offered by the most hidden places of the Park.
Northern Hawk Owl ( Chouette épervière ) balances on a tiny branch!!! I was privileged to get to spend some time with a BEAUTIFUL Northern Hawk Owl yesterday...heard from a friend of mine that there was one being seen within a few hours drive of my home in Eastern Ontario...I wasn't going to pass up the opportunity to see one of these rare visitors to my latitude. Its interesting to watch them perch , often on the tiniest branch where I could see it swaying in the wind..the largest of the sexes weigh only about 12 ounces ( maybe 340 grams). These owls dont often come this far south , they mostly live and breed much farther north than southern Quebec or Ontario. We found it without too much difficulty and spent a few hours photographing it as it flew and perched at different tree branches around whats become its territory...It was an exciting day to spend with this beautiful small owl|!!!!

The most perfectly structured supercell I've been privileged to witness so far. Southwest Oklahoma - March 18, 2012. The image was stitched from 5 or 6 individual photos.
More photos and chase account here: www.perezmedia.net/ceruleanarc/001512.html
This panorama of an isolated supercell in southwest Oklahoma shows some of the fascinating structures these storms possess. Warm, moist, unstable air is lofting upward into the storm, forming a dark, flat structure: the rain-free base. That buoyant air is carried away from the rain-free base by strong winds higher in the atmosphere. This allows the updraft and precipitation to remain separate and permits the storm to strengthen and sustain itself. The main body of falling precipitation, composed of rain and hail, falling downwind of the updraft is called the forward flank downdraft and appears as the dark sky looming above the northbound road along the right side of the image.
The interaction of varying temperatures, moisture content, and converging/entrained airflow can lead to a sculpted, layered appearance around the updraft column that's called stacked plate structure. Winds that turn and increase in speed with height create shear that leads to rotation in the storm's updraft. A separate column of sinking air called the rear flank downdraft (RFD) can be seen carving a ragged hole filled with hail and rain, surrounded by tattered clouds, in the middle of the rain-free base. Intrusion of RFD into the storm updraft is often seen prior to the formation of a tornado. A short time later, this storm dropped several brief tornadoes near Reed and Willow, Oklahoma.
We were privileged to see loads of these beautiful creatures on hol in Istria recently.

"The river to the ocean goes
A fortune for the undertow
None of this is going my way
There is nothing left to throw
Of Ginger, lemon, indigo
Coriander stem and rose of hay
Strength and courage overrides
The privileged and weary eyes
Of river poet search naiveté
Pick up here and chase the ride
The river empties to the tide
All of this is coming your way"

The Fortress of the Castle, is located on a privileged area of the city and the birthplace of it. The purpose of said edifications was to avoid attacks of local Indian tribes and possibly pirates coming along with the Dutch and French historical invasions of the Brazilian Coast. So this rustic and colonial constructions are dated back to the XXVII century in the early days of the city of Belém. This is where basically the city originated and from there expanded to its present firm ground, far away from the Bay and River.

I felt privileged to help with Audubon's citizen scientist study of Bluebirds and climate change. I hiked to a location where Bluebird nesting boxes were installed and documented with photos and video. This will hopefully help with requests for more boxes to be installed. Currently there are 3 boxes but one of the boxes was occupied by a House Wren. They also compete with Violet Green Swallows who try to expel them and take over the boxes. This pair were highly successful in keeping their box and raising young, although I'm not sure how many.
Great Spotted Woodpecker / dendrocopos major. Calke Park, Derbyshire. 30/11/16.
I was privileged to have two GSW's interacting with each other close to where I was concealed in Calke Park. They showed up a couple of times landing within six feet of me. I don't know if they were a pair or whether one was a parent bird who was still being pestered by a youngster born in the Spring.
The bird shown was the neatest and cleanest of the two and lacked a red nape spot. This denotes it as a female. Whenever there was an altercation, it was she who backed down and flew off a short distance with lots of loud calling.
I was privileged to attend the EBT's Fall Spectacular, in 2011. Of all the trips and journeys, this event probably ranks as the most enjoyable I've attended. There was something magical about this place, it just took you back in time.

Jonathan Hunt House
A ceremonial house
In the First Peoples Gallery in the Royal British Columbia Museum, you are privileged to enter the house of Chief Kwakwabalasami, the late Jonathan Hunt, a Kwakwaka‘wakw chief who was born and lived his life in the community of Tsaxis (Fort Rupert) on the northeast coast of Vancouver Island. The house is both a museum installation and a real ceremonial house. In the potlatch system, the Chief formally presents, to an invited audience, crest images, songs, names, and other prerogatives to which he claims inherited rights. The audience’s recognition of the Chief’s claim is its legal validation. Jonathan Hunt potlatched twice for this house, once at Victoria and once at Alert Bay, and spent thousands of dollars in the appropriate manner to confirm his right to display the house and its images. An arrangement between Jonathan Hunt, his descendants and the Royal BC Museum allows the Museum to exhibit the house permanently, while cultural ownership of the house and its images remains in the Hunt family.

Peyrieras Madagascar Exotic Reserve
I was privileged to see a comet moth and cocoon at the reserve, because the adult moth is very short lived. This image was photographed in the shade of a tree on the reserve. The tattered wings and the general condition of the moth show it doesn’t have much longer to live. The adult moth does not feed once it's out of the cocoon.
The comet moth (Argema mittrei) or Madagascan moon moth is an African moth, native to the rain forests of Madagascar. The male has a wingspan of twenty centimeters and a tail span of fifteen centimeters, making it one of the world's largest silk moths. The female lays from 120-170 eggs, and after hatching the larvae feed on Eugenia and Weinmannia leaves for approximately two months before pupating. The cocoon has numerous holes to keep the pupa from drowning in the daily rains of its natural habitat. The adult moth cannot feed and only lives for 4 to 5 days. Endangered in the wild due to habitat loss. - Wikipedia
In 2018 I was privileged to travel to Northern Cyprus. We Found the Oasis online and placed a reservation for our room. The location is stunningly beautiful!
As the sunset, and the waves crashed onto shore, a storm was brewing that would grow so intense It kept us up all night and at one point we thought we would perish. Our cottage was creaking, shutters slamming against the old stone building, and glass breaking somewhere outside. The howling winds, thunder claps, and downpours were not the typical storms I'd endured elsewhere. Needless to say we made it and the next day was pristine as if nothing had ever happened.
We were surprise and privileged to have a family of 5 Jays visit our North Milton Keynes garden. They are a member of the Corvid groups of birds and feed on seeds and acorns in the autumn as well as small mammals and (unfortunately!) chicks.
If you're privileged to spend a little time with these charmers, they can provide endless smiles. One of the parents is far left with two of the burrowing owl siblings.
So privileged to be able to see this Wedge-tailed Eagle chick, such a cute little white ball of fluff. I was very happy with how this image came out as it is a big crop (12% of the original frame) and shot from maximum zoom (EFL 960mm) so as to maintain distance from the nest.
Lunga, Treshnish Isles, Scotland
On our 2015 visit to Mull we were privileged to spend seven hours on Lunga. When the public boats departed after two hours we were able to move around quite freely photographing Puffins, Guillemots, Razorbills and these very relaxed Shags. It's just a shame about the ID rings, but I felt the bird was too beautiful not to post it. This image is not cropped and was shot with a 300mm lens on a full frame camera.

I am privileged to live within a few hundred yards of this nature reserve, but have still walked past this sign, and the lichens on the nearby stone, many many times without seeing. Here are some grabbed shots on my morning walk the other day. I plan to look again when the wind dies down and the rain stops for half an hour.

Most beautiful lake in Russia. The colour of the lake is real.
I feel privileged to be able to see it.
Together with Lake Teletskoye, Belukha Mountain and the Ukok Plateau it forms a natural UNESCO World Heritage Site entitled "Golden Mountains of Altai".
The lake is surrounded by alpine meadows and peaks over 3,000 metres high. It is situated at the height of 1,790 metres above mean sea level, stretching for 4.67 kilometres ( from north to south. The lake area is 3 square kilometres . It is up to 54.8 meters deep.

From the earliest times, the religious and political rulers of pre-Columbian societies began to decorate their bodies. In this way, they demonstrated their status, their privileged position and their sacred origin. But
These adornments did not serve as a "disguise", but allowed the person who wore them to take on a different body and personality. These elements transformed the dignitaries spiritually and physically.
Every animal or bird that I have been privileged to photograph over the last few years has eventually shown me their propensity for danger.
Like their human counterparts, some have very little tolerance for potential danger while others seem to thrive at living on the edge as they display little fear of humans.
Pheasants are birds that quickly run for the shelter of brush when they feel exposed to danger. If they calculate the distance to safety may be too far to comfortably run, they will often give off a familiar cry and explode from the ground to fly and put as much distance as they safely can before landing in more brush.
This beauty with a Joseph’s Coat gave me one more quick look before disappearing into the brush.

我們攝影家做的是一個上天恩准且有時是令人快樂的工作。我們得以看到這大千世界的無限絢爛。而我們的義務則是把我們所看到的傳達給其他人。
We are in a privileged and sometimes happy position. We see a great deal of the world. Our obligation is to pass it on to others.

Whilst travelling the River Schelde I was privileged to observe the sunrise behind one of the power stations that line the shores between Turnezan and Antwerp. The emissions from the cooling towers are not as alarming as they appear. The gases are drenched in water spray which removes nearly all of the harmful gases so what we are observing is predominantly steam. I am not sure of the chemical contents of the numerous contrails left by planes travelling to and from Schipol airport in nearby Amsterdam.
