This was the view I was privileged to wake up to yesterday morning. We don't get this type of "alpine glow" very often. The snow has stuck around for three weeks and we got a dusting last night. Longest cold spell here for more than 30 years. It sure does make for some fantastic photo ops. We broke freezing yesterday but it is 6 F or -15 C this morning and windy. Brrrrr. Larger
The island of Île Saint-Joseph is located off the coast of French Guiana in South America and is part of the Îles du Salut group. The now uninhabited island has been used as a prison and lunatic asylum since the middle of the 19th century. Due to the high mortality rate of the inmates exiled here, the island was nicknamed the ‘Island of Calm’ or ‘Dry Guillotine’. Visitors to Saint-Joseph can see the overgrown ruins of the prison buildings and the cemetery of the Îles du Salut prison administration. The many convicts who died on the island as a result of the inhumane prison conditions were fed to the sharks.

For the first time since 2019 I was privileged to watch this protective Gator Mom with her brood of youngsters. I only counted six.
Mike and I are very lucky (privileged) to have spent our entire lives living in areas where nature is easily accessible. I believe that easy & safe access to natural areas/public lands should be a right that everyone has, not just a privilege.
I also think it’s important to take care of the outside. We see far too much litter and unofficial trails made by people. We need to protect our nature.

Through our desire to see and touch the risen Christ once again, we are privileged to encounter certain individuals among us who are farther along in their paths toward wholeness, in whom we see much, much more clearly the image of God in Christ. . . . So our penchant for telling stories of those people in whom Christ was born, lived, and died again, this perennial hagiographic impulse of Christianity, so to speak, is inevitably part and parcel of our faith in a risen, incarnate God.

While walking through the stone streets of Mdina, even in a hot July afternoon, you can admire it's beautiful serenity.
This is the Cathedral of Mdina (Il-Katidral Metropolitan ta' San Pawl), as such the most important religious centre in all of Malta. The current building is Baroque from 1696-1705, replacing an earlier Gothic one that was destroyed by an earthquake.
The political and social center of the island of Malta was until the end of the Middle Ages, in the center of the island, on the hills that dominate the central plain. Here, since Phoenician times, THE city of Malta was established, originally Melita, apparently. It continued like this throughout the long Roman occupation. With the upheavals of Islamic expansion, this city that had been expanding, was razed and uninhabited for quite a while. It was then inhabited by North African Arabs, who gave it a new name, Medina, since it was the only city in all of Malta. This continued even with the new first Norman, then Angevin and then Catalan rule of Malta. The city, locally called Mdina, or also Cittá Vecchia - Cittá Notabile, did not cede political primacy until the Order of the Hospital arrived in 1523 to establish the new capital in the Grand Port, in Birgu, interested in naval dominance as they were. Finally, Valletta took over until today.
But Mdina, with its extension outside the walls with another name (Rabat, meaning "neighborhood"). continues to be a cultural hub of Malta. And its privileged position is noticeable when you arrive, with fantastic views over the surroundings, and a noble and serene architecture, literally of stone masonry. They call it "the city of silence"
I had a day in the Lake District yesterday before the door is shut tomorrow, as I’m taking the car in for it’s service today it was my last chance, my last hoorah. More of that when my gear dries out and I get look at the photos. I’ve been so disappointed with my captures on these outings of late and I think part of it is looking at these photos while I’m still glowing from the adventure and they never live up to that glow. Anyway it’s #WaveWednesday last weeks offering Fury was my most popular photo on instagram, thank you for your appreciation. As I write this it’s still not looking good in the world, it looking like that awful man is going to get another 4 years. Why is it as humanity edges to destruction we are putting our faith in these populist chancers. They have horrible policies, and when disaster hits like the rona they don’t manager the problem as they are more worried about their image. Many see through this, and are horrified by ordinary people supporting these privileged egotists, which causes deep division and hatred and I had hoped this may be a turning point but I fear it won’t. If the virus and their management has not brought us to our senses I fear for the worst. After that side swipe and talking about populist chances here is my wave Side swipe.

Mario Botta (1943), the utopian
He is the most illustrious representative of the "Ticino School", together with Luigi Snozzi, Aurelio Galfetti and Livio Vacchini, all of whom have won international renown.
What Mario Botta shares with them is not a signature but "a privileged rapport with the geography of the places that determine their architectural oeuvre,"
He is referring to the Italian-speaking region of Switzerland, which is "already an architectural creation in its own right," he says. "Its planes of water constitute a horizontal base against which the verticality of its valleys and its mountains is superimposed."
Botta, who worked alongside Le Corbusier, is one of the founding fathers of the Academy of Architecture of Mendrisio, his home town. He has designed over 600 projects around the world, including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (1995).

This folks was a very interesting series I was privileged to witness the other day, came upon the gorgeous, young, proud, and very elegant Bald Eagle with a R ed Wing Black Bird landing on it's tail and harassing this poor guy that was minding his business and it was relentless and brazen in his attacks as you will see, and the Baldy not knowing really what to do or handle the situation.

Meersburg is a town in Germany, located on the shores of Lake Constance, in the federal state of Baden-Württemberg, it is a city of considerable tourist weight, being one of the most visited points of this great lake.
It has a marked medieval character, like many of the cities in that area, and it is a beautiful and tourist city privilegedly elevated above the lake. This makes your view of it all, with the Swiss shore in front, the Alps behind it, and the city of Constance (Konstanz, in German) on the closer side, worth a visit on its own.
Any visitor will soon discover that another of the economic protagonists of the city is wine production, since its vineyards fill the slopes in an orderly and respectful way and its wineries, taverns and wine warehouses constantly remind us of this through German words related to It: Wein (wine), Keller (cellar), Winzer (viticulturist), etc.

Picture taken in 2024 with an Ihagee Patent Duplex 720, manufactured in 1925; Goerz Dogmar f4.5 / 135mm lens; Zebra Dry Plate in 9x12 format. My grandfather had an almost identical camera.
As I said in the title (in Catalan): "this photography could have 125 years, and you won't notice any difference". That's for two reasons: the Grande Chartreuse stands identical as in the XVIII Century... and dry plates where in use since the 1870's.
Located in a secluded and quiet valley of the French Alps, within the massif of the same name and north of Grenoble, the abbey of Grand Chartreuse has a lot of fame, both religiously and for the famous liquor it produces. It was founded by St. Bruno in 1084, though in the current site only in 1132. However, you can never visit the inside, only up to the perimeter walls. Even so, the visit is worth it for its privileged natural environment.
The Grande Chartreuse is the origin of the entire Carthusian order, and where the "General Capitol" meets every two years. The prior of Grande Chartreuse is at the same time the head of the entire order.
The Carthusian monasteries have a unique architectural structure, namely that the monks (and nuns) do not sleep in a dormitory or cells, but most sleep (and live in solitude) in small chalets with their own completely isolated workshop and courtyard of the outside world. In fact, the Carthusians live all week in silence and solitude, and only meet for mass and Sunday to eat together and have a few hours of meeting and even chatting. I say all this from my most complete agnosticism/atheism, But even so, I have a certain fascination for this lifestyle so far removed from the usual and burdened life we lead.
Also, there are monks who do live in community and who do the jobs to be able to maintain the almost total isolation from the others: kitchen, maintenance, gardens, etc...
Oh, and finally, to say that despite the apparent peace and unaltered silence of the Grand Chartreuse, it has suffered several fires since the Middle Ages that required major reconstructions (many of the buildings are from the 17th century) and on top of that two forced evictions : from 1790 to 1816 and from 1903 to 1940.

This is a small mountain lake in central Utah. I was privileged to shoot this June with Royce Bair @roycebairphoto and Robert McKendrick @naturalwildimage. About this time the wildfiresmoke was moving into Utah and the area we planned to shoot down in the lowlands was very compromised. We decided to try a high mountain lake in hopes we’d be above the smoke. To our delight the area was clear enough to get some very nice exposures. Thanks to Royce and Robert! 🙏 This is a stacked panorama at 16mm vertically, f/2.8, 30 sec, ISO 12,800. If you want to know why I used ISO 12,800, well I cannot tell you because I don’t know, lol. Mistake actually. When I got home I was surprised at the ISO, 😂. With enough stacked images the noise is not a significant issue though. Have a great weekend!
Enjoying the sunset from this watchtower is a moving experience, one of the best gifts that nature has bestowed upon us. The ruins of the Old Riópar Castle dominate the valley, at its feet lies the old medieval town, with its narrow and labyrinthine streets. Many legends surround this town that had its origin in the Bronze Age. It is even said that perhaps Hannibal's war elephants, on their way to Sagunto and Italy, passed through this strategic watchtower. A wonderful sunset from this legendary villa.

Don’t call me patriotic. I can’t support a country who was founded by slave owners and continues to guarantee the safety of the privileged few. I can’t support a country who profits off of imprisoning humans, often for crimes they didn’t commit, and perpetuating modern day slavery. I cannot support a country who puts children in cages and looks the other way when their immigrant parents are deported or murdered. I cannot support a country who has a dictator commit treason time and time again and never holds him accountable. Apparently, these colors do in fact run when it comes to defending justice when a so called leader continues to commit deplorable acts. I cannot support a country that defends confederate statues and cares more about cheap pewter than the blood and breath of its citizens. I will not support a country that allows billionaires to keep receiving profitable tax breaks and get richer while the poor starve in the street and have no access to healthcare during a pandemic while laughably still referring itself as a “first world“ country. I will not support a country who allows murderers with badges to continue to receive more of the wealth of tax collection than educational and mental health facilities. I will not support a country that willfully causes climate damage and chaos across the world and has continued to disrupt democracies in other countries since well before the day I was born.
I will not be raising and waving an American flag any time soon as it is the emptiest of gestures. Let freedom ring? If you think you are free, you are not. This country is the home of the brave and land of the free for a very limited few. Your brother is not free. Your sister is not free. If you think you are happy, you are not. Your brother and sister cannot even breathe. If you think you are one of the safe ones, they are coming for you next. If you have not been outraged since the day you learned to read about the history of America, you have not only not been paying attention but you may not have a conscience.
So don’t call me Patriotic. Don’t make me sing the national anthem. Don’t make me wave a flag. I am not free. You are not free and I am definitely not patriotic.
*******************************************
I am very patriotic. I have listened to the diverse voices of the people in this country, who we are lucky to have and I have decided to fight for those humans and their right to live freely and peacefully. I support these humans, their art, their music, their stories being heard. It is not radical to want human rights for everyone and to work towards that possibility. On July 4th or the White Independence Day, it would have been very easy for me to stay home in air conditioning but I decided to attend my 6th Black Lives Matter rally as a reminder that a country is only truly “great” until all of its people are treated like its adored children-loved, respected and cared for. After all, isn’t this the space where grace was shed and there is brotherhood from sea to shining sea? I could have watched Netflix and chilled but I decided that if someone is being mistreated in my country, I have to rise up again and continue to shout my objection.
If I wasn’t patriotic, I wouldn’t believe there was a chance for this country to be saved and redeemed. For what is a country if not for the human beings that reside in it? Is a country its purple mountains, its gorges, its fruited plains, its canyons, and oceans? Well, yes, but that is the topography of a country. I stand up for nature, too. But, even more important are the humans that make life worth living, whose experiences are worth learning, whose lives are worth protecting. I am so very patriotic, probably the most patriotic person you will ever meet in your life because I have seen and learned about a lot of bad things and the worst that people are capable of and yet I still believe at the end of the day in the possibility of the best of us. I have also seen Americans who art kind, intelligent, and talented. And, I’m still going to fight for Americans even if it’s 90 degrees and the middle of a pandemic. If I didn’t believe America was worth saving, I’d just go back to bed. Protesting is patriotic because it suggests that I believe people have the ability to listen. Dissent IS patriotic because it suggests that I believe people have the ability to change.
It’s up to you, too.
**If anyone is aware of the artist of the above street art please let me know. It didn't have a signature that I could see and it was found this weekend/Saturday in the downtown area where I was protesting.**
