Some call the genre of photography I am involved with "street photography" because much of it occurs on streets, and other public places. A more accurate name for my genre of photography would be "life as it happens", or the "human condition".
Meeting a stranger is something I usually enjoy immensely and having the opportunity to make a photograph of them is certainly a privilege. Sometimes I wind up in discussions that last a while and sometimes we only exchange a word or two. And at times there are no words spoken -- only the eyes and expression do the talking. As I carry my camera -- this wonderful, tiny time machine -- I am always trying to be an ambassador of hope, joy, opportunity, kindness, acceptance, and understanding. I have come to realize that every human being, despite their lot in life -- whether they are rich or poor, educated or uneducated, old or young, healthy or sick, famous or unknown -- all of them, all of us, need a moment of validation that verifies in our souls we are someone, and we are on this planet for a reason. More important than these moments in time I am freezing with this tiny time machine I carry around with me, are the simple validations, an exchange of hope, a reason to live, that I can give away freely with no fear of running out of inventory. And whenever I share a gift of hope with someone, I find a deposit has been made in my account, in my soul, that is better than in my bank account. For this is the reason we all exist on this planet.

CN’s executive train made a visit to the northland this week, its northbound trip departed Pokegama before sunrise but its return deadhead trip was met with a work block south of town so it spent the morning in the yard allowing an opportunity to snag a couple of roster type shots.
Unfortunately the Astra suffered a puncture earlier, requiring a new tyre and I noticed this while waiting outside the garage.
I'd guess it's been dumped since failing its MOT quite badly in January on some potentially rather expensive looking electronic issues. I can't see it facing a very bright future... A shame as it only has 52k on the clock.
An unusual colour for one of these, which I think quite suits it.

Chapter One - The Seventh Day.
Basically about the activities and relationships of the aristocracy and wealthy high society people in France. Published in 1749 ( Vol 2). I managed to buy this book on Ebay and thought that it was a good starting point for a still life. The image is very much about the calm before the storm – a period of time where the aristocracy and entrenched systems of privileges ruled supreme while the population was saddled with high taxes. To illustrate this a silver spoon is being used as a bookmark whilst the pear is symbolic of wealth and gluttony, especially a very large one! Politically controversial poems were circulating in Paris at this time- an interesting contrast to La Belle Assemblee. These tiny seeds of discontent may have been the very beginnings of the revolution that led to the storming of the Bastille some forty years later. I suppose the Internet and mobile phones have taken over such revolutionary duties………………………
so, i officially took early retirement from Sonoma State a year ago today -- and this seems like my slogan for the past year. feeling lost is not necessarily a bad thing -- but it's been surprisingly challenging, for me anyway, to figure out a sense of purpose or direction entirely on my own, without the overloaded schedule or crushing deadlines. i do not miss my old job at all (although i miss some of my lovely colleagues and students) -- but I'm also not really sure where i'm going from here...?
...yet also so thankful to be HERE, no better place to be lost in! plus it's a ridiculous privilege to be faced with such a challenge in the first place, so not complaining, not at all.
EDIT: and, it should be noted, i've got a long list of projects i feel like i really ought to be working on, yet often cannot muster the needed motivation/inspiration to actually get cracking. maybe one of these days! for now I've mostly been bobbing along like a cork in a pond, which can be deeply unsettling at times, but also really delightful at others...

Lake Superior shorelines (Treaty 60 Robinson Superior) is the traditional land territory and waterways of the Anishinaabe (Pic River Biigtigong Nishnaabeg, Pic Mobert Netmizaaggamig Nishnaabeg and Michipicoten First Nations). It is my incredible privilege and a gift to be a visitor here.
Bueno, pues ayer* en Alvedro tuvimos la visita de los dos Boeing 757 de Privilege Style, por la mañana haría su aparición el EC-HDS "Milagros Díaz" para realizar un vuelo charter a Madrid, y por la tarde vendría el de la foto, el EC-ISY "Cte. Jesús Guil" con el mismo vuelo charter pero en trayecto opuesto... Todo un lujo para los spotters que estábamos allí presentes.
La verdad que yo siempre pensé que estos aviones pertenecían a equipos de futbol, porque suelen salir bastante a menudo en la tele, y siempre con los logotipos de los equipos...
En la foto "Jesús Guil" se pone guapo ante los Spotters, para sail en posicional de vuelta a Madrid.
Dedicada a Sergio Vázquez, que sin el esta foto no hubiese sido posible.
