The facility was originally designed for 1,300 inmates, but now houses 2,237 men. Assemblyman David Weprin, Chair of the Assembly Committee on Corrections, Religious Leaders, Union Representatives, Elected Officials and Major Advocacy Coalition addressed the assembled audience in a rally on February 26th 2017; at the steps of New York City Hall, to stand together in opposition to Governor Cuomo's proposed cuts to visits in New York State maximum-security prisons and demand that this proposal does not come to pass.

Prison reform advocates and activist groups gathered outside the New York Governor offices in Manhattan to urge Governor Cuomo, the New York State Legislature, and the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS) to close Attica immediately and permanently.
