The Gaol was erected in 1826 under the direction of Captain James Butler who taken over as commandant of the penal settlement the previous year. Butler had adopted the ideas of Jeremy Bentham, the English philosopher and social reformer. In the area of prison reform Bentham advocated abolishing the practice of flogging and argued instead for the use of sensory deprivation in silence and darkness as a means of discipline. The notion was that under these conditions the miscreants would be caused to reflect and realise the errors of their ways. Following these theories, Butler constructed the gaol on Sarah Island to be, in his words, a reformatory. The cells were approximately three feet wide, seven feet long and eight and a half feet high; and they were completely dark except when warders were observing a prisoner through a system of shutters. For convicts who had broken the rules, Butler saw this as a more humane form of discipline than flogging with the cat-o'-nine-tails. However, the practice was eventually discredited because the sensory deprivation drove many men insane.

No one is free in the shadow of a prison. Picked this up sometime out near Botany Bay well before Covid-19 pandemic prohibited bus travel.

Not seen it before. Note the reference to DonDale detention centre in Northern Territory.

“I was born Cybill Verded Fox on August 8th, 1971. My mother was an educator and my grandmother was the housekeeper for Hank Williams’ mother. I came from a people who had a strong desire to have something, to make something out of ourselves. My mother, she taught me from a very young age that the American dream was real, and she would say “Cybill, you can make it—if you try.” And so, here I was, a young girl from the urban city and I was determined—to try.

Sacramento has a beautiful 15 story mural of Johnny Cash. It towers over the surrounding buildings and as you can see it definitely has a commanding presence in the sky. This mural honors the 50th anniversary of “At Folsom Prison.” Cash was a strong advocate for prison reform and better inmate treatment. This beautiful work of art was done by artist Shepard Fairey, who by the way did the iconic “Hope” poster from the 2008 Presidential campaign of Barack Obama (forever my President)

We started the walk on Freedom Trail in Boston Common from Park Street church.

Designed by Peter Banner, the 217 ft. steeple of Park Street Church was once the first landmark travelers saw when approaching Boston. The church was the tallest building in the United States from 1810 to 1846.

Celebrating its Bicentennial in 2009, Park Street Church’s lofty architecture reflects an even loftier mission of human rights and social justice.

Prison reform began in this church, women’s suffrage was strongly supported here, and some of the first and most impassioned protests against slavery were delivered inside these hallowed walls.

Park Street Church became known for supporting Abolitionist causes, hosting an anti-slavery lecture series as early as 1823. As part of the lecture series, a young William Lloyd Garrison delivered his first major public Abolitionist speech on July 4, 1829.

Located on the Freedom Trail, the Park Street Church is one of the most historically significant buildings in the story of the Abolition's history of the nation.
