CNR PRINCE GEORGE in Vancouver, B.C. Built in 1947 and sailed the Vancouver to Alaska Route until 1974.

Nov 11, 1972

Premier Christy Clark and MLA Shirley Bond talked with residents during a visit to the Prince George Chateau seniors' home.

The steamship 'Prince George' was built in the late 1940's by Yarrows shipyard in Victoria, B.C., Canada for Canadian National Steamships, a subsidiary of Canadian National Railway Co. She was purpose-built for the Vancouver, B.C. to Alaska run, typically following a Vancouver - Ocean Falls - Prince Rupert - Ketchikan - Sitka - Juneau - Skagway - Wrangell - Vancouver itinerary. In the 1950's the service ran all year, but only in the summer from the 1960's onwards. The ship's Alaska career ended once larger and more economical ships were introduced by several international cruise corporations.

The photo is from a 1951 cruise booklet, showing the ship in its original form.

The City of Prince George's origins can be traced to a fur trading post founded in 1807 by Simon Fraser on traditional Lheidli T'enneh territory. The agricultural settlement around the trading post - named Fort George - began in the early 1900s when the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway (later CN Rail) entered the region. The first train came into Prince George in 1914 and changed the town forever. The city’s name was also voted on to be either Prince George or Fort George and Prince George won overwhelmingly (153 to 13).

The Prince George Hotel was the first business to open on George St., in 1914, and was originally a bar run by a man named E.E. Phair. It was closed down when British Columbia underwent Prohibition in 1916, but was transformed into a hotel by J. H. Johnson in 1919. This rainbow/sunset combo was made more vibrant and dazzling contrast to the dark cloud cover. People were stopping in the street to stare at it. The pictures really don't do it justice.

Premier Christy Clark announced plans to create a new provincial park in the northern region of the province.

Willow River Bridge is located on Upper Fraser Road, approximately 37 km north east of Prince George. The current single lane structure will be replaced with a modern two-lane bridge.

The original Willow River Bridge was built in 1957 and consisted of a wide single lane timber bridge. In March 2002 due to damage, the bridge was replaced with a temporary steel Acrow bridge that was intended to be replaced with a two-lane, permanent structure. This project will replace the temporary single lane bridge with a modern two-lane one, as well as realign 580 m of Upper Fraser Road and reconstruct 100 m of Arnett Road. These improvements will provide increased safety and mobility for residents and the traveling public.

During construction, the current Willow River Bridge will be used as a detour to ensure safe and effective traffic movement.

Canadian National Steamships (owned by Canadian National Railway Co.) operated cruises from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada from the 1950's to Alaska on a route Vancouver - Ocean Falls - Prince Rupert - Ketchikan - Sitka - Juneau - Skagway - Wrangell - Vancouver.

A family member of ours took one of those cruises, in July 1951, and this is a scan of the cover of a booklet published in 1951 about those cruises. The booklet cover's inset is a photo of the cruise ship 'SS Prince George' which was the only vessel used for the CNS cruises. (see link photo below)

The comet is now moving through the stars of Andromeda as it gradually fades. In a few days, it will be passing M31, the Great Nebula in Andromeda, our closest neighbour galaxy (not counting the Magellanic Clouds). Hopefully the skies will be clear because this pair will be a stunning sight. Mar 27, 2013.

Canfor in the middle looking East.

Upper Marlboro is a town in and the county seat of Prince George's County, Maryland in the United States. The population within the town limits was 631 at the 2010 U.S. Census, although Greater Upper Marlboro is many times larger.

Upper Marlboro is the county seat of Prince George's County, a large urban and suburban area of some 850,000 people adjacent to Washington, D.C. U.S. Route 301 and Maryland Route 4 intersect at the edge of town. The northern terminus of the Stephanie Roper Highway (Maryland Route 4) is in Upper Marlboro at the intersection of Pennsylvania Avenue and Water Street. Major features of the town include the courthouse, jail, county office building, board of education, and a lake with walking path. Just to the south of town is the Prince George's Equestrian Center which is the location of the annual county fair, a major annual antiques show and The Show Place Arena on the former Marlboro racetrack grounds. This arena is used for events such as hockey games, circuses, rodeos, conventions, trade shows, and graduation ceremonies of many regional high schools, as well as daily overflow parking for county governmental employees, jurors, and visitors.

Although the surrounding area has many rural, pastoral features, including horse farms, housing developments are increasingly prevalent. However, except for supermarkets, an Amish market, car dealers, and a Home Depot, all outside the town limits, the town and surrounding area have only minimal shopping; therefore, residents must travel to Bowie, Clinton, Brandywine, Waldorf, or Forestville to find department stores. Upper Marlboro is convenient to employees commuting to locations along Maryland Route 4 or US Route 301, such as Andrews Air Force Base and the U.S. Census Bureau.

The area of Upper Marlboro was first settled around 1695. It was named after John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough, an ancestor of Winston Churchill. The land, which was to become the town, was part of several estates known as Grove Landing, Meadows, and Darnall's Chance, owned by the Brooke, Beall, and Darnall families, respectively.
