Crows are such an innovative, intelligent bird. It's fascinating to observe their behaviours. This one was watching the goings-on at the Farmer's Market in Prince George.

I've been watching a few Red-necked Grebe nests from the road on a local lake surrounded by a campground. I finally got my first glimpses of "the next generation", so I launched the kayak this morning and had a great time just watching. This shot shows the male (I'm assuming - it's definitely the bigger of the parents) still sitting on the nest (and presumably another egg?) with some company. The little one was already very capable of swimming on his own.
Unfortunately Mother Nature cut things a little short with some brief bouts of hail and torrential rain, but I'm sure I'll be out again soon in better light and better weather...

I’ve never seen the cutbanks so green. Back in the day, I fractured my wrist running down the cutbacks at full tilt. I had to ride my bike all the way home. (It was a long way back). That week, I had to do a test on the parallel bars in gym class. I got 7 out of 10—it was brutal. When I went to school the next day with a cast, my teacher asked if I had done the test with a fractured wrist. I said, yes. He was impressed. I had one of the better marks in class. For some reason, people didn’t do well on the parallel bars. I think it must have been a lack of upper body strength. Too much video games, I guess…hahaha.

Spring is coming fast - it's amazing what a difference a week makes. Over the past week most of the local lakes have gone from iced over to wide open and new migrating water fowl are arriving daily.

An image from a special encounter last night. I stopped at local marsh area to do some birding around dusk. There were a pair of Virginia Rails calling back and forth across the road, so I cranked up the ISO and dug in hoping to get some good looks of the birds (not usually an easy thing...). I could hear one of the birds moving through the foliage, approaching the edge of the road, so I quickly moved my set-up to the opposite side of the road, hoping the bird would emerge from the vegetation and give me some good images. After peaking out from the foliage, the bird immediately started across the road at a pretty good clip only allowing me a couple sharp frames before he closed the distance enough to be inside the minimum focal distance of my lens (not so good on an old 800mm lens @ ~20ft). The bird then, naturally, slowed right down and casually walked by ~8ft away, giving me a few scornful looks then ducking back into the marsh grass. Even if I could focus, I had much to much lens - I should have mounted the 200-500mm instead. Live and learn...

Toiling away into the night, CN 7506 works hard at the north end of CN's former BC Rail yard in Prince George, BC. The rail yard typically hosts 2 yard jobs at a time with a third running late into the night. Operating as a remote controlled unit, 7506 spews smoke and oil as it shoves a cut of cars into the yard at full throttle.

How many farms have went under in the last hundred years due to government red tape? How much farmland is now owned by corporations and billionaires? What about corporations like Monsanto and Bayer? The best grasslands in British Columbia are owned by an American billionaire. British Columbia doesn’t have much grassland. I am hoping to go camping in one of the grasslands next week.

Naming
The river is named after Simon Fraser, who led an expedition in 1808 on behalf of the North West Company from the site of present-day Prince George almost to the mouth of the river.
