She was a beauty--a gold 45 goddess for sure! A Gold 45 Goddess exalts the archetypal form of Athena--the Greek Goddess of wisdom, warfare, strategy, heroic endeavour, handicrafts and reason. A Gold 45 Goddess guards the beauty of dx4/dt=ic and embodies 45SURF's motto "Virtus, Honoris, et Actio Pro Veritas, Amor, et Bellus, (Strength, Honor, and Action for Truth, Love, and Beauty," and she stands ready to inspire and guide you along your epic, heroic journey into art and mythology. It is Athena who descends to call Telemachus to Adventure in the first book of Homer's Odyssey--to man up, find news of his true father Odysseus, and rid his home of the false suitors, and too, it is Athena who descends in the first book of Homer's Iliad, to calm the Rage of Achilles who is about to draw his sword so as to slay his commander who just seized Achilles' prize, thusly robbing Achilles of his Honor--the higher prize Achilles fought for. Meet "Pretty Bird" a beautiful red Northern Cardinal; I photographed yesterday late pm after the rain finally subsided, right outside of Orlando Wetlands entrance.
It was pretty dark out right after the rain, and the sky was an undesirable stark gray--not particularly attractive for any photo op. But, I wanted to keep my ISO low, and keeping a narrow aperture of f10. You ask why narrow aperture and not wide?
Okay, I'll share my thought for those interested. I'm photographing birds/wildlife, not people. So, clarity and details are a must. Since the natural light was lacking, I chose to use my Nikon SB-700 in combo with low ISO, and keeping my narrow aperture of f10, all in manual mode; which is how I shoot. And here's my two cents about why I added the Flash, which by the way, I'm not fond of using in general-- I prefer natural light. To that, it's my opinion Northern Cardinal Birds need to be in the right light to depict the details in their beautiful red plumage, or it just doesn't seem to do justice to the bird. I can't tell you how many times I've photographed Cardinals. Countless times and when I arrive at my home, I'll look at my shots at 100% only to dump the photo altogether. If it's not a clear shot showing details I don't even want to keep the image. So, considering my lighting conditions, I feel this photo turned out just fine.
Now, let me give you a back history of my connection to the Northern Cardinal species. Two years ago, we lived in a rear-load garage home that faced a beautiful conservation area and lake, which was almost exclusive just to us. We didn't have neighbors right smack next to us. We were the only house on that block, and that was fantastic. Our yard was abundant with several bird species, including several Cardinal bird families. In fact, if you take a look at my Flickr photostream you'll find many Cardinal shots from two years ago. We had two separate Cardinal families on each side of the house nesting in our trees. We had feeders as you can image, but I often camouflaged it with lovely greenery I gathered from the same woody area behind our home. Lucky enough, we had an entire family of Cardinals, parents and chicks visit our feeders daily.
Interestingly the Cardinals figured out the times I added food to the feeders, and often would stop by around those times to visit with me. We had lots of Red-winged black birds that would come in flocks to clean out the feeders, or at least it seemed that way because I had to go out there often to replace food. So, remember how I mentioned my garage was rear facing? Well, I didn't have a blind-hideout like most wildlife photographers do, but I had a "beach tent" that came in just as handy. I kept my garage opened all day, and set up that baby right on the edge of it, facing straight to the feeders. And yep, you know it, I got to sneak a few great shots with that beach tent setup. As time passed, the Cardinal as well as other bird species became comfortable having me around and often, the birds would come inside the garage looking for food if it was all gone. Particularly the Juvenile Cardinals would do this with me, and so I began the nickname of "Pretty Bird." After all, they have a beautiful, striking red-colored plumage.
Pretty Bird it was! When they came to feed I would say "hi pretty bird, how's my Pretty Bird doing today?" I know, it sounds crazy, but when you're getting a cute visitor like that on a daily basis, you end up loving the company too. That led to my calling song, and it went like this... "pretty bird, pretty bird, pretty bird, where's my pretty bird?" and I swear the Cardinals would come to my house from where ever they were. My husband didn't believe me, so one day I called the birds by my singing sound "pretty bird, pretty bird, pretty bird, where's my pretty bird" and they would come asap. I kid you not! So, he was "no way" they do that for you?Next thing you know my husband was coming home from work to find "pretty bird" inside the garage calling out for me. As I mentioned, I used to leave my garage door open all day just so I could go out and shoot the breeze, or fish out by the lake with my little boys.
True story, the Cardinals used to come to my song "Pretty bird, pretty bird, pretty bird, where's my pretty bird?" To end my long story here, my boys now call every Northern Cardinal they see "Pretty Bird." Naturally, I do the same too. Here's to another beautiful Northern Cardinal, also known as Pretty Bird by yours truly.
