This gallery depicts a series of futuristic pictures by the French painter Jean-Marc Côté and other artists issued in 1899, 1900, 1901 and 1910. Originally in the form of paper cards enclosed in cigarette/cigar boxes and, later, as postcards, the images described the world as it was imagined to be like in the then distant year of 2000.
At least 87 were produced, and I have managed to capture 73 of them 😊. While a few were on point (A version of Skype or Facetime), many were wildly off-tangent (underwater croquet, anyone?). And all are definitely worth a look!
Sources: All images are in the public domain; Most were obtained from gallica.bnf.fr/
, although I had to edit a few to render them in higher resolution.
In December 1900, the Ladies’ Home Journal publishes 28 predictions for the year 2000!
This article was written by civil engineer John Elfreth Watkins, Jr. who claimed to have surveyed “the most learned and conservative minds in America… the wisest and most careful men in our greatest institutions of science and learning.”
The 28 predictions cover various topics including travel, the transmission of information over great distances, and biological and genetic mutations.
Please judge for yourself how close to reality these were 😊.
The actual article can be found here:

A transcript which I used is here:
I won the Superbowl halftime prediction contest. My guess was 7-10, Patriots. The real score was 9-10, Patriots. The prize was that package of Andes mints.
I didn't bring my camera, so this picture was taken with my husband's phone.

NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center is predicting that a near-normal Atlantic hurricane season is most likely for 2019. This outlook forecasts a 40% chance of a near-normal season, a 30% chance of an above-normal season and a 30% chance of a below-normal season. The hurricane season officially extends from June 1 to November 30.
For 2019, NOAA predicts a likely range of 9 to 15 named storms (winds of 39 mph or higher), of which 4 to 8 could become hurricanes (winds of 74 mph or higher), including 2 to 4 major hurricanes (category 3, 4 or 5; with winds of 111 mph or higher). NOAA provides these ranges with a 70% confidence. An average hurricane season produces 12 named storms, of which 6 become hurricanes, including 3 major hurricanes.
This outlook reflects competing climate factors. The ongoing El Nino is expected to persist and suppress the intensity of the hurricane season. Countering El Nino is the expected combination of warmer-than-average sea-surface temperatures in the tropical Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea, and an enhanced west African monsoon, both of which favor increased hurricane activity.
Remember: It only takes one storm to devastate a community. Last year hurricanes Florence and Michael resulted in more than 100 lives lost and caused more than $50 billion in damage.
Some communities are starting the 2019 hurricane season while still working to recover from last year.

"When the teeth of children will not be allowed to 'go to destruction,' because they have the choice of whether attention shall be given or not; When we shall not, through over sympathy for the child's feelings, be directed to 'do nothing if it is going to hurt;' When such a remark as 'I would rather have her lose her teeth than be late at school,' will be impossible, by reasons of an intelligent understanding of the importance of the teeth; When efforts to instruct parents as to the means of preventing premature loss of the deciduous teeth, and the preservation of the permanent ones, shall be rightly esteemed and cooperated with. My Grandfather was a son of the city, born on the lower east side. His parents were Polish immigrants and he was raised amongst the working poor. His life was tough and it made him a tough man. He rode the rails during the Depression and taught himself how to be an electrician. Learning a trade allowed him to raise himself up and move beyond his poor working class roots. Over the years we would chat and he would share with me his world view, which mostly boiled down to the world being a rigged game and you needed connections to get ahead. Connections trumped skill and hard work. The funny thing is he was never bitter about it and he never seemed to mind that his own bootstrap story belied his world view.
He died almost 25 years ago and not a day goes by without me thinking about him for a few moments. Maybe it’s because the thought of him always makes me smile. He had opinions on almost every subject, some of them teetering on bizarre or flat out funny- though he didn’t see them that way. Quite often he’d come up with something truly and deeply insightful. We were sitting in his living room one night discussing the struggles of the city. This was early in the long decline of the city when concerns were just being raised about people and businesses leaving town. Most neighborhoods and commercial districts were still in good shape. He told me that the city will continue to decline until the price of property becomes so low that it becomes nearly a risk- free investment and then you’d see the rich guys coming back in with their checkbooks. At the time I thought he was crazy. The city would never become that abandoned. Little did I know.

Omikuji is a prediction written on strip of paper at Shinto and buddhist shrines. It is randomly chosen in a box. You have several kind of predictions from the best one Dai kichi or great blessing, Kichi, blessing to Dai Kyo or great curse. When the prediction is bad, it's a tradition to fold up the strip of paper and attach it to a pine tree or where it is usual in the temple so the bad prediction is attached to the tree and not the bearer. If it's a good prediction, the bearer can attach it as well (to have a greater result) or keep it for luck.
