My Grandfather was a son of the city, born on the lower east side. His parents were Polish immigrants and he was raised amongst the working poor. His life was tough and it made him a tough man. He rode the rails during the Depression and taught himself how to be an electrician. Learning a trade allowed him to raise himself up and move beyond his poor working class roots. Over the years we would chat and he would share with me his world view, which mostly boiled down to the world being a rigged game and you needed connections to get ahead. Connections trumped skill and hard work. The funny thing is he was never bitter about it and he never seemed to mind that his own bootstrap story belied his world view.

He died almost 25 years ago and not a day goes by without me thinking about him for a few moments. Maybe it’s because the thought of him always makes me smile. He had opinions on almost every subject, some of them teetering on bizarre or flat out funny- though he didn’t see them that way. Quite often he’d come up with something truly and deeply insightful. We were sitting in his living room one night discussing the struggles of the city. This was early in the long decline of the city when concerns were just being raised about people and businesses leaving town. Most neighborhoods and commercial districts were still in good shape. He told me that the city will continue to decline until the price of property becomes so low that it becomes nearly a risk- free investment and then you’d see the rich guys coming back in with their checkbooks. At the time I thought he was crazy. The city would never become that abandoned. Little did I know.

Omikuji is a prediction written on strip of paper at Shinto and buddhist shrines. It is randomly chosen in a box. You have several kind of predictions from the best one Dai kichi or great blessing, Kichi, blessing to Dai Kyo or great curse. When the prediction is bad, it's a tradition to fold up the strip of paper and attach it to a pine tree or where it is usual in the temple so the bad prediction is attached to the tree and not the bearer. If it's a good prediction, the bearer can attach it as well (to have a greater result) or keep it for luck.

The rectangular nozzle is shown in gray with an isosurface of temperature (gold) cut along the center plane of the nozzle showing temperature contours (red/yellow). The acoustic field is visualized by (blue/cyan) contours of the pressure field taken along the same plane. The chevrons enhance turbulent mixing just downstream of the nozzle exit shaping how the jet spreads downstream. This significantly reduces the noise produced by the supersonic jet compared to a rectangular nozzle without chevrons (not shown).

2019 Atlantic tropical cyclone names.

NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center is predicting that a near-normal Atlantic hurricane season is most likely for 2019. This outlook forecasts a 40% chance of a near-normal season, a 30% chance of an above-normal season and a 30% chance of a below-normal season. The hurricane season officially extends from June 1 to November 30.

For 2019, NOAA predicts a likely range of 9 to 15 named storms (winds of 39 mph or higher), of which 4 to 8 could become hurricanes (winds of 74 mph or higher), including 2 to 4 major hurricanes (category 3, 4 or 5; with winds of 111 mph or higher). NOAA provides these ranges with a 70% confidence. An average hurricane season produces 12 named storms, of which 6 become hurricanes, including 3 major hurricanes.

This outlook reflects competing climate factors. The ongoing El Nino is expected to persist and suppress the intensity of the hurricane season. Countering El Nino is the expected combination of warmer-than-average sea-surface temperatures in the tropical Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea, and an enhanced west African monsoon, both of which favor increased hurricane activity.

Remember: It only takes one storm to devastate a community. Last year hurricanes Florence and Michael resulted in more than 100 lives lost and caused more than $50 billion in damage.

Some communities are starting the 2019 hurricane season while still working to recover from last year.

Molecular simulations are a powerful tool and they have provided predictions in a wide variety of physical and chemical systems that have later been verified by experiments. They can even be used to study how experimental probes disturb physical systems and in some cases they can be used to design molecules with desired physical properties.

The correctness of simulation protocol is crucial for obtaining physically correct and predictive results. If not chosen carefully, one can obtain quite spectacular but physically incorrect results. In the reference below [1], we demonstrate that there are critical several issues that need special attention especially in carbon nanotube systems. In particular, the treatment of charges is of extreme importance. In addition, thermostatting in Molecular Dynamics simulations may create additional problems. In addition to carbon nanotubes, our results also apply to biological systems such as aquaporin and other passive channels.

This movies shows water molecules entering a carbon nanotube. Hydrogen bonds are shown in yellow (notice how they form and break). See also the movie of a carbon nanotube connecting water reservoirs: nanotube model for aquaporin

Simulations were done with Gromacs.

Either my data parsing is incorrect or my computer is trying to tell me something. I am getting phantom quakes which only appear when I add the gravitational flowfield and place gravity nodes at every 4.0+M earthquake. There are about five of these, the largest of which is in Eastern Turkey. You heard it here, folks.

We couldn’t be more

excited for our 2022 Michigan Municipal League Convention happening this year in beautiful Muskegon.

This year’s Convention marks a reset for our local leaders. Positive change is

happening across the state. Thanks to the hard work of our members, now is the moment

to shape a future that turns this potential into prosperity. Attendees will spend Oct. 19-21 meeting with

transformational thinkers and fellow local leaders to fill up on inspiration, energy,

insight, and new tools at this year’s Convention!

While in this shoreline community, you won’t want to miss this opportunity to

explore. You can catch a stunning sunset over the water, stroll along the beach

and pier at Pere Marquette Park, and discover the downtown revitalization that’s

underway, including the city’s expansive social district.

Of course, the main show is the Convention itself, and we have put together

a fantastic agenda of inspiring speakers and education sessions on multiple

topics. On the main stage, we’re particularly excited to have keynote speaker

Symone D. Sanders-Townsend, host of the MSNBC news show “Symone” and former chief

spokesperson and senior advisor for Vice President Kamala Harris. Plus, there are

sessions on space-hacking, using social media effectively at the local level, the

intersection of law enforcement and mental health services, creating a municipal

climate action plan, and data-driven-decision making. We also will cover ways to

use your state and federal assistance funding to improve community prosperity

and quality of life and get a legislative update from our Lansing advocacy team.

Even with that list, we’ve barely scratched the surface of all the sessions,

workshops, activities, and tours planned. Our general sessions and speakers are:

HOUSING: A LOCAL PERSPECTIVE FOR MICHIGANDERS BY MICHIGANDERS

Speakers: Brenda Harris, Realtor, Fivestar* Real Estate

Moderator: Selma Tucker, Director, Strategic Communications,

Michigan Municipal League

Everyone is talking about the housing market. Let’s go behind the scenes with a

real estate agent to get their take. Chat with Brenda Harris, a well-known realtor

and short-term rental business owner in Muskegon and the region. Brenda will

join the MML’s Selma Tucker for the inside scoop on the issues real people and

their communities care about—attainable and affordable housing, new supply,

funding, and—yes—short-term rentals. You might be surprised by what she has

to say.

PUBLIC SERVICE FROM OMAHA TO THE WHITE HOUSE

Speakers: Symone D. Sanders-Townsend, author, seasoned democratic strategist and host of “SYMONE” on MSNBC and MSNBC on Peacock

Why are you a public servant? It probably has something to do with where you’re from and how that community shaped your future. Symone Sanders-Townsend is creating a legacy of public service at the national level rooted in the values of her hometown of North Omaha, Nebraska. Those values have catapulted Symone to rarified air on that national stage having held senior positions in presidential campaigns, the White House, and now her own show, “Symone” on MSNBC. At 32, Symone speaks from a generation of public servants investing heavily in a future that has more opportunity, equity, and joy.

STRENGTHENING COMMUNITY THROUGH MUSIC

Speakers: John Sinkevics, Editor and Publisher, Local Spins Online Magazine

Michigan has a special relationship with music. Motown was created in Detroit. Bob Seger, Eminem, Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, The White Stripes, Madonna, Diana Ross, Kid Rock, Smokey Robinson and many other marquee names were born and, in many cases, raised in one of our communities. Add the rich history of concert venues from Idlewild to Houghton and it becomes clear that music is a Michigan asset. How can communities support their local musicians? How can music help bring us together when we feel so far apart? Answers and more at this lively and interactive session.

POLITICAL PUNDITS PONTIFICATE: DISCUSSING THE 2022 ELECTIONS & WHAT IT MEANS FOR YOU

Speakers: Rick Pluta, Senior Capitol Correspondent, Michigan Public Radio John Sellek, Founder and CEO, Harbor Strategic Public Affairs Karmilia K. Landrum, Executive Director of the Detroit Branch of the NAACP Moderator: Zoe Clark, Political Director, Michigan Radio

With the November general election right around the corner, we’re gathering a panel of political experts to talk about the election, give some of their predictions, discuss key races and ballot issues our members care the most about, and debate other hot political topics, including short-term rentals, revenue sharing, pension reform, and more. This is your chance to ask the media and political expert

So, get ready to learn, enjoy, network, and have fun discovering Muskegon and

the ways to make your own communities even better.

Stay connected with all that is going on at Convention and with the League year

round by following the League on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. For the latest

Convention updates, be sure to follow #mmlconv.

One of the key parts of Convention is our Community Excellence Award competition. We’re now down to the final four competing for the top prize and the winner will be selected and announced at the conclusion of our Convention.

This year’s winner will be decided by the entire Convention delegation. Our

four nominees will make presentations on Wednesday, October 19, immediately

following the opening general session.

Voting will take place at the Community Excellence Award voting booth in the

Delta Hotel pre-function space from Wednesday, October 19, from 11:30 am to

5:45 pm and again on Thursday, October 20, from 8:00 am to 3:45 pm. Voting

will also be available via the Convention mobile app on-demand.

Our official auditors, Plante Moran PLLC, will oversee the voting booth and

count the ballots. The Community Excellence Award Cup will be presented on

Friday, October 21, at the closing General Session.

The 2022 finalists are:

Cassopolis – Imagine Cass Project Village of Cassopolis:

Small, Rural, and Exceptional

Farmington Hills – City of Farmington Hills Community Center –

The Hawk

Royal Oak – Centennial Commons: Reimagining a Parking Lot

into a Green Gathering Space

The little Eagle Hunters

This gallery depicts a series of futuristic pictures by the French painter Jean-Marc Côté and other artists issued in 1899, 1900, 1901 and 1910. Originally in the form of paper cards enclosed in cigarette/cigar boxes and, later, as postcards, the images described the world as it was imagined to be like in the then distant year of 2000.

At least 87 were produced, and I have managed to capture 73 of them 😊. While a few were on point (A version of Skype or Facetime), many were wildly off-tangent (underwater croquet, anyone?). And all are definitely worth a look!

Sources: All images are in the public domain; Most were obtained from gallica.bnf.fr/

, although I had to edit a few to render them in higher resolution.

MANDATORY BYLINE PIC FROM MARY EVANS PICTURE LIBRARY/ CATERS NEWS - (PICTURED: Correspondance Cinema-Phono-Telegraphique - A futuristic cine-phono-telegraph, which allows people to speak over the telephone and see each other on a screen at the same time.) - These old postcards created by artists more than a century ago reveal the scarily accurate predictions made of life in the 21st century. The intriguing colour sketches, called En LAn 2000 (In the Year 2000), look strangely familiar despite being created between 1899 and 1910. The quirky cards show a host of recognisable scenes including one picture, called Correspondance Cinema-Phono-Telegraphique, which depicts a man relaxing in a chair while he makes a video phone call - just like the Skype or Facetime of today. Another image, entitled A bord dun Paquebot sous-marin, shows a couple observing marine life through a giant window which bears more than a slight resemblance to the aquariums we have today.
