A Car-Sledding Party at the South Pole
This gallery depicts a series of futuristic pictures by the French painter Jean-Marc Côté and other artists issued in 1899, 1900, 1901 and 1910. Originally in the form of paper cards enclosed in cigarette/cigar boxes and, later, as postcards, the images described the world as it was imagined to be like in the then distant year of 2000.
At least 87 were produced, and I have managed to capture 73 of them 😊. While a few were on point (A version of Skype or Facetime), many were wildly off-tangent (underwater croquet, anyone?). And all are definitely worth a look!

Folk 009.
.
Name: Cricket, the Sun Cured
Species: Paiva, the Sun Folk
.
About the Paiva: The Paiva are one of the oldest and most looked-to Folk. The counterpart to the Alawi, the Moon Folk, who are divinely in touch with the spirit world, the Paivo are deeply connected with physical matters, to a divine level. Able to feel how plants and animals grow, they are looked to for everything from crop and weather predictions, to finding and curing illnesses.
.
Some Paiva even excel in the physical fortune telling, being able to read bones and predict fortunes from tea leaves.
.
Despite being depended on, the Paiva are an elusive race who do not love the presence of communities around them. Often living in the woods, they usually make routine trips to communities to aide those who need it. If assistance is needed from a Paiva before their visits, those in need must send messenger, or seek out the Paiva in their woodland dwellings themselves.
.
About Cricket: Cricket the Sun Cured is the resident Shaman for several villages nearby her dwelling in the Allita woods. Even for a Sun Folk, she has remarkable abilities, seeming to be able to infuse energy into almost anything physical. Drawing upon her own vast stores of spiritual energy, she can make natural cures more potent, give a sickly being more energy, read bones and tea leaves, and strengthen the growth of plants, to only list a few.
.
She has a small group of dedicated Folk who are her assistants, helping her perform rituals needed to keep energy balanced, create healing salves and teas, and helping her keep track of what day she visits what community (Calendar planning has never been a passion of hers), and sustain the life of the forest around her. Any Folk working under Cricket is gifted with an Orange Pearl necklace, and is treated with the utmost respect by the Shaman.
.
Cricket dislikes things that waste her time. She very much enjoys her Shamanic duties, but find it important to meditate and to simply sit and be present when not busy (Also, she has been known to enjoy cartoons when she has had the opportunity to watch them). She can be fiery and dryly sarcastic from time to time, but in spite of this has great affection for those who seek her out (Mostly.). Although not one to express affection for strangers, she greatly values and Folk or human she considers ‘Family’.
.
Cricket is almost constantly drinking tea (Occasionally coffee), while sitting cross legged. She very much likes how this adds to her Shaman-ish air.

Collection of eight images; Labelled 54-61 earlier
This gallery depicts a series of futuristic pictures by the French painter Jean-Marc Côté and other artists issued in 1899, 1900, 1901 and 1910. Originally in the form of paper cards enclosed in cigarette/cigar boxes and, later, as postcards, the images described the world as it was imagined to be like in the then distant year of 2000.
At least 87 were produced, and I have managed to capture 73 of them 😊. While a few were on point (A version of Skype or Facetime), many were wildly off-tangent (underwater croquet, anyone?). And all are definitely worth a look!
Sources: All images are in the public domain; Most were obtained from gallica.bnf.fr/
, although I had to edit a few to render them in higher resolution.
