There is such breathtaking beauty in seeing a calving glacier. Had the opportunity to explore some glaciers at close quarters and experience the choppy waters first hand.
abandoned carbide factory and hydro power plant
Oerlikon 35 tons crane and shaft were built in 1911 and lead deep down to the Hydro Power Plant.
These Power Cars, along with several others already at the Carriage Sidings and Potters, Ely, will be moved to the docks for export, starting October 17th 2023. This move from Leeds Neville Hill will be their last move on British Metals.
Fiddlers Ferry Power Station is a decommissioned coal fired power station located in Warrington, Cheshire, North-West England. Opened in 1971, the station had a generating capacity of 1,989 megawatts and took water from the River Mersey. After privatisation in 1990 the station was operated by various companies, and from 2004 by SSE Thermal, a subsidiary of SSE plc. The power station closed on 31 March 2020.
With its eight 114-metre (374 ft) high cooling towers and 200-metre (660 ft) high chimney the station is a prominent local landmark and can be seen from as far away as the Peak District and the Pennines.
Good Afternoon Everyone!
Very much hope your weather and circumstances are better than ours. Don't be deceived by the blue sky. All is not calm!
All day and night yesterday we were battered by extreme weather - with 70mph gusts. At 9.00am this morning there was no let up and in fact the gusts seemed even stronger - so much so that a power line above our village was severed. Consequently no electricity. We weren't alone as it affected a wide area.
The squally rain did, however, produce this fine spectacle - viewed from my home in Betws yn Rhos, Conwy, North Wales. Thankfully, the power was later restored.
It's now 13.00pm and our extreme weather continues!
Very much hope you are all still safe and well too.
Marshall and Aveling & Porter engines
A traction engine is a steam-powered tractor used to move heavy loads on roads, plough ground or to provide power at a chosen location. The name derives from the Latin tractus, meaning 'drawn', since the prime function of any traction engine is to draw a load behind it. They are sometimes called road locomotives to distinguish them from railway locomotives – that is, steam engines that run on rails.
Traction engines tend to be large, robust and powerful, but also heavy, slow, and difficult to manoeuvre. Nevertheless, they revolutionized agriculture and road haulage at a time when the only alternative prime mover was the draught horse.
They became popular in industrialised countries from around 1850, when the first self-propelled portable steam engines for agricultural use were developed. Production continued well into the early part of the 20th century, when competition from internal combustion engine-powered tractors saw them fall out of favour, although some continued in commercial use in the United Kingdom well into the 1950s and later. All types of traction engines have now been superseded in commercial use. However, several thousand examples have been preserved worldwide, many in working order. Steam fairs are held throughout the year in the United Kingdom, and in other countries, where visitors can experience working traction engines at close hand.
Took this image of our pink plumeria plant, which flowers through the year.
I decided to post today for H.P.P.T.
