Conventional hang gliders and paragliders can be foot launched from hills or towed into the air. But as they are gliders, once airborne (or when the tow line has been released if a tow launch) the pilot must immediately seek out rising air to stay airborne...By adding a small engine and propellor a hang glider can be turned into a powered hang glider (PHG) and a paraglider turned into a paramotor (Powered Paraglider or PPG).
Power units can be either two or four stroke, and for greater flexibility are usually attached to the hang gliding or paragliding harness. So if conditions are favourable and you don't want to fly under power you can simply use a conventional harness with your wing, giving you the best of both worlds.
What a majestic creature. The RTH is the perfect blend of power, speed and durability. I guess that's why they are the most common and widespread hawk in North America. I just love the full extension take-off action of this species. One has to freeze the action to fully appreciate its beauty.

While Lender Texas seldom gets extreme weather, this concrete power line support system sets a good example for areas that have frequent storms that knock down wooden power poles.
The 1916 Type B Erie Shovel made by Ball Engine Company of Erie, Pa. is my favorite piece of steam equipment at Denton Farm Park. (See the rest of these pix in the album www.flickr.com/photos/lionel682/albums/72157628909883323/). This steam powered fan always fascinates me. The shovel was found in Harrisonburg Va. Derelict and used as a sign for a stone quarry. Weight is 41000 lbs, dipper hold 3/4 of a cubic yard, boom is 17 1/2 ft and height is 18 ft, cab is 8'2" wide and 12' 10" long, the boiler is 45 inches in diameter and 88 inches high with a heating surface of 364 square inches and holding 275 gal of water. Ordinary working pressure is 125 lbs designs for 143 and tested to 213. Used double reversing boilers for hoisting, digging, swinging. It can be self propelled on steel wheels.
Contre-jour, and probably at F 11. There is a certain drama not just in the sky, but between the two types of energy here - natural and man-made (the sun and electricity produced by power plants). Both we are exposed to and benefitting from. Our mish-mash world.
I posted another, maybe a few other shots of hay bales, this is a different one. Each photo had a slightly different perspective. The lighting was changing fast!

My plan this morning was to drive out to Maumee Bay State Park and take some pictures. Driving South on 280, I made a detour hoping to find my way back to a railyard I'd spotted. After toodling around for a bit with no results, I was ready to get back on the highway and proceed with plan A.
Fortunately, instinct led me to keep following a road to its dead-end conclusion, stopping at train tracks with a line of brilliant yellow daisies adjacent to them.
I shot the daisies and power towers for about an hour, just enjoying the brisk September morning, with trains coming through about every 15 minutes.
Eventually, a train slowed and finally stopped. So I made some shots of it, and finally stumbled across this composition -- immediately knowing this was the shot I came for.
