Puccini's Tosca, 1900

Color lithographs on card stock and envelope

Selling the Opera: When Tosca, Giacomo Puccini's tragic tale of art, love, and murder in Rome during the Napoleonic wars, hit the stage in 1900, it was an international sensation. G. Ricordi and Company, who published the opera, made sure of that, organizing productions in Milan, London, and New York in quick succession. Ricordi controlled all marketing for the opera, employing Leopoldo Metlicovitz to create a consistent "look" for the opera. He designed the cover for the musical score, the poster for the first production, and even this set of postcards, with the poster design doubling as a protective envelope.
