Illia Lager, 10, in his home in the village of Druzhba, eastern Ukraine. The Lager family lives very close to the contact-line, which divides government- and non-government-controlled areas, and where the protracted conflict is most severe. For the Lager family, living close to the contact line comes with a constant fear of shelling, landmines, water shortages and financial hardship. In addition, the protracted conflict continues to take a substantial toll on their mental health. Illia’s mother Viktoria attended the positive parenting workshops supported by UNICEF and the European Union and learned how to support her children and manage their fears.

Enid A. Haupt Garden
A rooftop garden reflecting cultural influences celebrated in the adjacent architecture and museums below.
Free tours of the Enid A. Haupt Garden are offered every Wednesday and Friday at 10 a.m. through September 26, 2025, weather permitting. No tours on federal holidays (July 4). Check the Smithsonian Gardens calendar for the most up-to-date information.
During construction on the Smithsonian Castle, the Enid A. Haupt Garden will remain open. Pedestrian routes on both sides of the Castle will allow access from the National Mall to the National Museum of African Art, the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery and the garden.
Mary Livingston Ripley Garden
A quiet oasis with a distinctive sense of intimacy and informality.
The Mary Livingston Ripley Garden is a quiet oasis for countless visitors to the National Mall each year. Its unusual curvilinear design—the work of noted Washington, D.C., architect Hugh Newell Jacobsen—along with a profusion of flowers in raised beds, creates a distinctive sense of intimacy and informality. The garden’s ‘goal’ is to expose visitors to a wide variety of plants and inspire people to expand their plant palette. In the garden’s early years, Smithsonian staff transplanted euonymus from the family home of Smithsonian Secretary S. Dillon Ripley in Litchfield, Connecticut, to form the east wall’s espaliers. Today, Smithsonian greenhouse staff produce the garden’s unique hanging baskets and seasonal plants for the flowerbeds.
The Mary Livingston Ripley Garden was the inspiration of Mrs. S. Dillon Ripley, lifelong plant scholar-collector, gardener, and wife of the Smithsonian Institution’s eighth Secretary. Mrs. Ripley conceived the idea for a “fragrant garden” on the eastern border of the Arts and Industries Building—a location that was designated to become a parking lot. In 1978, Mrs. Ripley persuaded the Smithsonian Women’s Committee, which she had founded in 1966, to support the garden. In 1988, the Women’s Committee recognized their founder and friend by naming the garden after her.
In 1994, Mrs. John Clifford Folger of Washington, D.C., and Palm Beach, Florida, initiated an endowment fund for the support and care of the garden in order that it might be preserved as it was first conceived by Mrs. Ripley. This thoughtful gift was given with the hope that others might add to the fund so that visitors would be able to enjoy the garden into the 21st century.

Kathrine Dulin Folger Rose Garden
The Kathrine Dulin Folger Rose Garden has been a treasured component of the Smithsonian landscape since 1998. This four-season garden showcases roses as well as types of plantings that support healthy relationships between people, plants, and insects. This garden is made possible through a generous gift from the Lee and Juliet Folger Fund.
Originally designed to showcase modern roses, the garden was expanded and renovated in 2016 to feature all own-root roses selected for disease resistance as well as companion plantings chosen to attract and provide for beneficial insects.
