This is a photograph from the 3rd running of the Irish 3/4 Marathon (formerly the Athlone 3/4) which was held in Longwood, Enfield, Co. Meath, Ireland on Sunday 7th of October 2018 at 10:00. The event is positioned perfectly in the calendar as a key training race before the Dublin City Marathon at the end of the month. Participants are advised to use this long distance race as a preparation for the Dublin City Marathon and to pace themselves accordingly. This year was the third year that the event was held in Longwood, Co. Meath which is now well known for its hosting of the Longwood 10KM/5KM annual races and a host venue for East of Ireland Marathon series marathons several times per year. The race started and finished at Longwood GAA club just outside the village of Longwood. It followed an anti-clockwise course around the beautiful picturesque countryside of south Meath. The course went through the townlands of Longwood, Castlerickard, Killyon, Hill-of-Down, Anneville and Ashfield Clonard, Blackshade, Stoneyford and back to Longwood. The locally famous Blackshade bridge at 17 miles provided the largest climb of the day. The river Boyne and Blackwater were crossed as was the Royal Canal and the Dublin-Sligo Railway line at Hill-of-Down. The overall elevation of the course works out at 3/4 of the total elevation of the Dublin Marathon course. The south Meath countryside around the course looked on a beautiful with some lovely quiet traditional 'Irish'-type roads to run on. There was a large local effort with stewarding and many local people watched from their gardens as the race passed by. The organisation of the race (by Paul Mahon and Outfront Events) was first class with every detail taken care of from the start until the finish. As usual the weather is the only variable that cannot be controlled. Subsequently, the only negative from a runners' view was the very very strong headwind from the turn at 6 miles right through Killyon and Hill-of-Down. However, other parts of the course offered a strong tailwind and flat terrain.

Positioned above the beach approach at Weybourne Hope and built into the cliff this Shellproof Vickers Machine Gun Emplacement is semi-sunken with added roof camouflage, all openings have been bricked up. There is a west facing Large Embrasure which has a chamfered roof line above, the Embrasure opening would have been reduced in size with added Sandbags for protection. There is probably steps leading down to a Full Height Entrance, but has been backfilled over the years, and an external Blast Wall gives protection. The rear of the Gun Emplacement as been exposed by coastal erosion, and it's probably just a matter of time before she topples over the cliff !
The Vickers Machine Gun Emplacement is constructed with brick-built shuttering and poured concrete, and is built to a Shellproof specification with 51in walls, it's a rectangular square plan of approximately 14ft x 14ft with chamfered corners on the front face and roof line. There is a forward facing Large Stepped Embrasure to house a single Machine Gun, the Entrance is to the left of the Embrasure within the line of fire, this is protected by a large and thick Blast Wall. Inside the Gun Emplacement behind the Large Embrasure is a Large Concrete Table which was used to mount the Vickers Machine Gun on its Tripod. There is also up to three Embrasures/Loopholes for either Rifle or Bren Light Machine Gun use. In the rear wall is an Air Vent. Normally positioned in pairs as a 'Two Gun Section' and often on steep forward facing slopes, usually semi-sunken with Earthen Camouflage covering their Position.
This is an image of me in a leadership position. I was a cheerleader all 4 years of high school and was also a captain.
These two Ten-Tec Orions make up the 10 meter position. Each rig has an Alpha amplifier. During our CW contest, John, K4BAI, was the predominant operator in this position. It was a terrific, high pleasure and honor for me to get to meet John, finally, after having worked him in contests over many years.
A simple exercise on distance to control the light ,
all the pictures are with the same distance from the background wall about 2 meeters and the flash from 160 cm to 25 cm.
Light is a bare SB600 on a stand 15° higher than the face
Thanks David strobist.blogspot.com ,
I've never tought to be able to control the light this way!!!

With so many Spanish groups scattered and several Spanish leaders hit, and a big unit of redcoats coming up, the table is ceded to the Crown forces.
An enjoyable game that shows the limits of regulars in a messy and jumbled environment The Spanish needed to form up quickly while they outnumbered the Crown and the initial ambush needed to hurt the Spanish a bit more.
The Spanish losses were: 5 in the Florida Militia and their leader KIA 3 in the barely engaged Black Militia The Grenadiers had 8 dead and the Lights lost 5. Oklane was wounded and his Yamasee lost 6. 28 dead altogether.
The Crown forces had 5 Darien Scots killed and Mckay wounded. The Georgia Rangers lost 7 -all near the end of the battle. The Indian allies had 7 killed along with their leader wounded. The 42nd only had 1 man killed-obviously most of the action was on the other side of the trail. Total of 20 casualties plus 2 Big Men wounded.
I really enjoy these sort of under-represented theatres.

Start with first position. First position is arguably the easiest basic ballet position. Stand with your feet together, ensuring your heels touch. Then, turn each leg outward so your feet are perpendicular to your torso. Keep your heels together, but allow your feet, calves, and thighs pivot until your feet form a straight line parallel with your shoulders. The end stance is first position.
- Your whole leg from your thigh to your feet be turned outward. The end result will turn your feet in a straight line on the floor, with your heels in the middle.
- First position for the arms looks like you’re holding a beach ball in the middle of your stomach. Keep your fingers about 4 inches (10 cm) apart, and tilt your hands just slightly toward your face.
Jim again, shown here in one of his funny positions. Before he came to live with us, he'd been injured in an RTA, and had undergone a femoral head ostectomy (basically, surgical excision of the traumatically broken-off ball at the top of the back leg). A cat's pelvis is too delicate to allow pinning of the joint, and the top of the leg forms a 'phantom joint' in the scar tissue. In Jim's case, this doesn't appear to have compromised his mobility at all, but he has the advantage of being young, fit, and relatively lightly built. But he does end up sitting in some pretty odd positions as a result. That's Ginger on the right of the picture, having a snooze after supper.

A trip to Independence Lake Rd. it's an annual place to visit in mid-October. We usually find new ways to look at the same old trees. One of the attractions is a group of aspens that turn orange whereas most are yellow.
