"The Castle sits on a commanding position on the summit of a small hill just east of the busy A172 close to the lovley village of Swainby. Whorlton Castle is a late 11th century earthwork motte and bailey fortress, founded by the de Meynell family. The low motte is encased by a wide, deep ditch and a counterscarp bank, with the ditched kidney-shaped bailey and an attached burgus to the east. Standing at the west end of a spur, with steep slopes to the north and west, the castle was described as ruinous in 1343. In the mid to late 14th century, Sir John or Sir Philip Darcy founded the stone castle when adding a tower house and gatehouse to the motte. The rectangular three storey gatehouse stands partially within the ditch and its entrance passage was protected by inner and outer portcullises. Projecting from the north west angle, is a spiral stair which is only accessible from the inner ward and the roof line on this side, is from a late 16th century, a two storey house. Standing on the north-west angle of the motte platform, are the remains of vaulted cellars from the demolished tower house"

With 2 Races for both Miglia class and Dunlop Mini Sevens as well as Formula 3 The Days events were already shaping up to be One for The History Books with Multiple Fierce and Competitive Drivers from Saturday Looking to Improve and Win their Respective Classes.

Dunlop Mini Challenges Supported by Mini Spares - Miglia (Race 9 Results)
First up onto the Track was The Dunlop Mini Miglia Challenge and after a Very Intense Qualifying Battle Yesterday (Aron Smith) Took the Pole with (Andrew Jordan) Second and (James Cuthbertson) in Third Place. Will all Three Men be able to Keep their Positions come the Race or will they start to fall down the order once Racing Gets Underway. Lets find out.
In First Place was (Endaf Owens) in his Miglia with a Best Lap Time of 54.221 and a Top Speed of 78.76mph. Fantastic Drive there Endaf who was Definitely not Afraid to get that Miglia Sideways as he Raced his Way through the Field to take a Dominant Victory.
In Second Place was (Andrew Jordan) In His Miglia with a Best Lap Time of 54.498 and a Top Speed of 78.64mph. Amazing Driving from Andrew Showing what a Fantastic Mini Racer he is as well as a Superb BTCC Driver as well using his Skills Learned from his BTCC Racing to Hold on for Second Place.

Previously Yesterday During Qualifying it was (Jeff Smith) who took the Pole with (Nick Fowler) in Second Place and (Spencer Wanstall) in Third Place with all Three Drivers being Separated by Less than Half a Second as they Crossed the Line to Finish Qualifying.
With Three Very Experienced Drivers at the Front and a Whole Grid of other Great Drivers Ready Lets see what Results this Race will bring.

Formula 3 up Next and with the Track being Mostly Dry before the Start of This Race Each Drivers was Ready to Push Hard and try to take the Victory from the other. Qualifying Yesterday Proved that even a Smaller Grid can still Make for some Intense Racing with Drivers such as (George Line) (Robbie Watts) and (Shane Kelly) showing some Incredible Speed and Capable Car Control thought the Entire Qualifying Session.

Pre 66 Mini's were up Next and a whole Host of Classic Minis had taken to the track during their Formation Lap with Mini's from a By Gone Era that Showed Beauty and a Really Fierce Competitive Nature during the Pre 66 Category of Mini Racing.
During Qualifying the Previous Day (Ian Curley) Narrowly Beat Endaf Owens to Pole by just 0.254 with a Very Fast and Committed Lap Endaf Had to settle for Second Place while (Phil Brown)would take Third.
But today out of all three drivers who would be Brave Enough to challenge Ian and Endaf both Drivers who are very Competitive in their Racing and who both want to Win This One Race.
In First Place was (Endaf Owens) in his Mini Cooper S with a Best Lap Time of 58.026 and a Top Speed of 73.85mph. A Very Fast and Fearless Drive from Endaf who looked like he was Really Enjoying throwing that Mini Around in his Very Aggressive Driving Style. Congratulations Endaf

The Teekay Couplings and Production GTI Championship was up next and with a whole Range of VF Golf GTI'S in one Race it was Going to be a Very Quick and Action Packed Race to Watch.
During Qualifying (Martyn Walsh) took the Pole with (Adam Hance) and (John Beale) in Second and Third Place Respectively.
With So Many Evenly Matched Cars Taking Part in the Race This was Really going to be About Driver Ability and Car Control to see who could extract that little bit more performance out of their Machine for a Victory.
In First Place was (Simon Hill) in his VW Golf GTI with a Best Lap Time of 56.824 and a Top Speed of 71.05mph. Amazing Driving Simon Pushing that VW to its Limits and Really showing off the Complete Understanding of Driver and their Car around the Race Track.
In Second Place was (Adam Hanke) in his VW Golf GTI MK5 with a Best Lap Time of 56.682 and a Top Speed of 71.02mph. Very Well Done Adam and a Really Spirited Drive from a Fantastic Driver to gain Second Place.

Enrico Caruso’s ascendancy coincided with the dawn of the twentieth century, when the world of opera was moving away from the contrived bel canto (“beautiful singing”) style, with its emphasis on artifice and vibrato, to a verismo (“realism”) approach. The warmth and sincerity of his voice—and personality— shone in this more natural style and set the standard for contemporary greats like Luciano Pavarotti, Placido Domingo, and José Carreras. Through his exploitation of the nascent phonograph industry, Caruso is also largely responsible for the sweeping interest in opera of the 1910s and ’20s. And for this, Stanley Jackson wrote in his book Caruso, he may never be rivaled, for later tenors could not hope to find themselves in a similarly fortuitous position and thus would most certainly “find it more difficult to win such universal affection as the bubbly, warm-hearted little Neapolitan whose voice soared and sobbed from the first wheezy phonographs to bring a new magic into countless lives.”
Born in Naples, Italy, in 1873, the third of seven children (early sources erroneously state that he was the 18th of 21), Caruso was raised in squalor. His birthplace, according to Jackson, was a “two-storeyed house, flaky with peeling stucco, [accommodating] several families, who shared a solitary cold-water tap on the landing, and like every other dwelling in that locality it lacked indoor sanitation.” As a boy, Caruso received very little formal education; his only training in a social setting came from his church choir, where he displayed a pure voice and a keen memory for songs. More often than not, however, he skipped choir practice to sing with street minstrels for café patrons.
At the age of ten Caruso began working a variety of menial jobs—mechanic, jute weaver—but his passion for singing often led him back to the streets. Eight years later, an aspiring baritone named Eduardo Missiano heard Caruso singing by a local swimming pool. Impressed, Missiano took Caruso to his voice teacher, Guglielmo Vergine. Vergine on hearing Caruso, compared the tenor’s voice to “the wind whistling through the chimney,” Michael Scott recounted in The Great Caruso. Although he disliked Caruso’s Neapolitan café style, flashy gestures, and unrefined and unrestrained vocalizing, Vergine finally agreed to accept Caruso as his student. But “the lessons ended after three years,” John Kobler wrote in American Heritage, “and Caruso’s formal musical training thereafter remained almost as meager as his scholastic education. He could read a score only with difficulty. He played no musical instrument. He sang largely by ear.”
On March 15, 1895, Caruso made his professional debut in L’Amico Francesco, a now-forgotten opera by an amateur composer. He was not an immediate sensation.

His vocal range was limited; he often had to transpose the musical score down a halftone since he had trouble in the upper register, especially hitting high C. But impresarios who heard Caruso recognized his innate gift and cast him in significant productions such as Faust, Rigoletto, and La Traviata. With stage experience and brief training with another vocal teacher, Vincenzo Lombardo, the singer made steady progress, refining the natural beauty of his voice.
“Who Has Sent You to Me? God?”
In 1897, studying for the part of Rodolpho in Giacomo Puccini’s La Bohème, Caruso went to the composer’s villa to secure Puccini’s consent of his interpretation. As told by author Jackson, after Caruso sang a few measures of the first-act aria, “Che gelida manima,” Puccini “swivelled in his chair and murmured in amazement, ’Who has sent you to me? God?’”
Caruso’s instrument was “a voice of the South, full of warmth, charm, and lusciousness,” described a commentator of the era who was quoted in Howard Greenfeld’s book Caruso. But what truly set Caruso apart—from his predecessors, contemporaries, and successors—was his ability to eliminate the space between singer and listener, to intensify “the emotional effects upon his audience,” testified American Heritage contributor Kobler. “His vocalized feelings, variously spiritual, earthy, carnal, seemed to resonate within the hearer’s body. Rosa Ponselle, the American soprano who made her debut opposite Caruso, called it “a voice that loves you.’”
And his timbre was matched by sheer power; at the height of his career, Caruso gave concerts in venues as large as New York City’s Yankee Stadium without microphones and was clearly heard by all. Still, he reached his greatest audience, across both distance and time, through the small, recorded medium of the phonograph. “Few performers deserve . . . recognition more than Caruso,” David Hamilton proclaimed in the New York Times. “[His] records made him the universal model for later generations of tenors, while his reputation played a major role in establishing the phonograph socially and economically.”
Recording Pioneer
Caruso made his first recording on April 11, 1902, in a hotel suite in Milan, Italy. Over the remaining 19 years of his life he made an additional 488 recordings, almost all for the Victor label. He earned more than two million dollars from recording alone, the company almost twice that. But, most important, his recordings brought grand opera to the uninitiated. Millions cried along with his version of Canio’s sobbing “Vesti la giubba,” from/Pagliacci. The development of the American opera audience from a rarefied community at the turn of the century to a diverse populace in modern times can be directly attributed to Caruso’s recordings.
But Caruso’s allure was not solely the result of his singing. “Quick to laughter and to tears, amorous, buffoonish,... speaking a comically fractured English, round and paunchy, Caruso presented an image that appealed enormously to multitudes of ordinary Americans,” Kobler pointed out. Indeed, his offstage behavior was as interesting to the public as that of his onstage personas. He had numerous affairs with women, which often ended in court. He had an 11-year relationship, beginning in 1897, with soprano Ada Giachetti, who had left her husband and son for the much younger tenor. She bore Caruso two sons, then ran off with the family chauffeur. Three years later, Giachetti sued Caruso for attempting to damage her career and for theft of her jewelry. The suit was eventually dismissed.
Offstage Shenanigans
Caruso was not exonerated, however, in what became known as the “Monkey House Case.” On November 16, 1906, Caruso went to the Monkey House in the Central Park Zoo, one of his favorite retreats in his adopted hometown of New York City. There a young woman accused him of pinching her bottom. A policeman on the scene immediately took Caruso—confused and sobbing—to jail. The woman failed to appear at the consequent trial, and police were unable to produce any witnesses other than the arresting officer, who turned out to have been best man at the accuser’s wedding. The judge found Caruso guilty of disorderly conduct and fined him ten dollars. The public, for its part, though initially unsure of Caruso’s innocence, soon returned to its thunderous approval of his performances.
Despite these episodes, Caruso’s life outside the theater was not entirely tumultuous. His marriage to Dorothy Park Benjamin in 1918 was happy and secure. His celebrated earnings allowed him to collect art, stamps, and coins. His clothing and furnishings were luxurious. He ate with gusto. And he was extremely generous. A gifted caricaturist, Caruso often gave drawings away. He would fill his pockets with gold coins and shower stagehands with them at the end of Christmastime productions. He also supported many family members, gave numerous charity concerts, and helped raise millions of dollars for the Allied cause during World War I. This remarkable man even paid his taxes early. “If I wait, something might happen to me, then it would be hard to collect,” Caruso reasoned, as recounted by Kobler. “Now I pay, then if something happen to me the money belongs to the United States, and that is good.”
Caruso’s expansive approach to life, however, rendered his own short. Constant recording and performance demands and the singer’s unchecked appetites took their toll on his health; he died in Naples, in 1921, from pneumonia and peritonitis. He was 48 years old. “Caruso may have been a greater master of comedy than tragedy,” Great Caruso author Scott wrote, “yet there was no levity in his approach to his art, for as each year passed and he became an ever more celebrated singer, his fame—ably demonstrated by frequent new issues of ever improving records—made increasing demands of him. In those last years he rode a tiger.”

The Church may have lost its dominant position in Irish society but there is plenty of hope for Christians today. That was the resounding message from Ecumenical Bible Week’s 2019 symposium which took place in the Holy Cross Diocesan Centre, Dublin, last Thursday (June 13).
Three speakers – the Revd Dr Patrick McGlinchey of the Church of Ireland Theological Institute, the Rt Hon Sir Jeffrey Donaldson, MP for Lagan Valley, and Patricia Devlin who is an environmentalist and part of the Orlagh in the City Eucharistic community – tackled the subject: ‘How can we be Christian in Ireland Today? Voices of Hope in a Secularised Ireland’. The thought-provoking discussion, covering the spheres of theology, politics and ecology, was chaired by Archbishop Michael Jackson.
Church and Theology
Proceedings were opened by Dr McGlinchey who outlined the changes which ushered in the secular age. Increased media influences challenged the monolithic religious culture; Vatican II brought about changes in understanding among the faithful which had a knock on effect on the younger generation; there was a distancing among the church–going population; and clerical sexual abuse and institutional cover up alienated people.
However, he said he was convinced that this was not the end of the story and gave three reasons to be encouraged in the face of discouragement. Firstly, the end of Christendom is not evidence that the Christian faith is untrue. He said that we don’t have to mourn the time when the church ruled the roost: “Christianity is a movement, not an institution”. Secondly, the secular narrative that we no longer need God is not true to human nature. Dr McGlinchey said that we live in an age of distraction and the reality of God is not immediately obvious. Thirdly, the secular withdrawal from God will not be maintained because life will become unsatisfying.
He suggested that there were three imperatives for the Church. We must communicate Christ by living out the faith; individual Christians must allow themselves to be transformed by Christ thus making the invisible God visible; and the Church must become a community that serves.
Dr McGlinchey concluded by delivering three unshakeable grounds for hope: Christ has been raised bodily from the grave; the gates of hell shall not prevail against his Church and while it may be challenged it will not be overcome; and we have a hope which is not just for this life, Christians can die well.
Church and Politics
Sir Jeffrey Donaldson said that while the standing of the Church had diminished, it was not the end of the story and that maybe it had to happen. “I’ve seen society changing,” he said. “It is now difficult for me as a Christian to speak publically of my Christian faith … Where tolerance is the mark of this more liberal secular society, I wonder how much tolerance there is for freedom of religious belief. I’ve seen it more so in Great Britain but it is increasing in Northern Ireland.”
Living in the public square, Sir Jeffrey said he had seen the media influence on secularising our culture. “It’s very subtle. They’ve stolen our language. They’ve learned that softening their language can win votes. But by their fruits ye shall know them. It’s what the Church does rather than what the Church knows that will help it regain influence, and by having influence I don’t mean having power,” he stated.
As an MP, he deals with people who are broken and said he could see that there was a hole in their lives. Increasingly people are experiencing mental health problems. Living in the fast lane creates pressure, he said. “When I deal with people who are broken I try to show them that there is something different in how I do business. I don’t put the Bible in front of them … but I do try to show them the love of Jesus. Jesus said that we are to be the salt and the light. I say that the salt is not the main thing but it improves the meal. The Church isn’t the main thing in our society and we have to accept that but what we have to offer can change the main thing and make it better,” he explained.
Turning to the issue of human rights, Sir Jeffrey said that social issues were now presented as human rights. He said in Northern Ireland, recognising that the narrative about abortion is changing, they have sought to push back in the debate with a new approach proclaiming that both lives matter. “We have to look at the narrative and we have to show respect. But we're also entitled to receive respect. The media narrative tends to lean against that. People who come from a Christian perspective can be torn apart in the media. We need to stand up and say that if you believe in human rights, then freedom of expression is part of that,” he stated. He reported that the Council of Europe was exploring the concept of reasonable accommodation in seeking ways of accommodating people who have a conscientious difficulty with the laws that have been put in place.
“As a politician and primarily a Christian, I am not despondent or without hope. The relevance of the Church is still there. The message of Jesus is still there. We should be putting Jesus front and centre at the heart of what we do. We shouldn’t be afraid to say it and it concerns me that on the big debates either the media leave the voice of the Church out or that Church leaders don’t want to enter that very difficult arena,” he said. He argued that he did not feel that Christianity could not be progressive but he said he was not sure that taking the life of a baby was progressive. He added that after 30 years of Troubles in Northern Ireland, there was a lot of healing and reconciliation to be done across the island and the Church had a role to play in this.
Church and Ecology
“The house is on fire,” said Patricia Devlin. In searching for all the possible ways of being Christian in Ireland today she said this was the message that spoke loudest to her. “The message of being a Christian in Ireland today has to include ecological conversion,” she stated.
Focusing on Pope Francis’s Laudato Si encyclical, she said that climate change called Christians to seek a more equitable distribution of materials and a more equitable version of consumerism. “We who live this style of life must be aware that we can and must learn from those who have less than we have at the very point where we want more and more,” she said.
Human choice can change the tide of global warming, she stated. She added that for the first time in history we are recognising that our choices affect the environment and that we can do something about it. “Life on earth as we know it is changing. We have 12 years to get control of carbon emissions before irreparable damage is done and I pray that the ecumenical movement can grasp this,” she said. The greatest contribution Christians can make is to understand the challenge and contribute to the transformation of consciousness.
Personal, community and global economic relationships need to change and this cannot happen without a change in morality, she contended. This will affect what we eat, what we wear, what we buy, our assets, where we shop, where we go on holidays, where we educate our children … in short it will change everything. It also means changing our perception of our relationship with God, she said. The good news is that more people are now taking notice and taking action, she said.
Pope Francis’s vision for the environment is tripartite, she stated, involving God, Nature and human ecologies. She explained that the human root causes of the environment crisis stemmed from misuse of creativity and the power of technology, our anthropocentric perspective, practical relativism and our reductionist perceptions of human beings. She said the Church could contribute to change by educating for the covenant between humanity and the environment and facilitating ecological conversion. “Christians are being challenged to speak for the climate in the public square, in their churches, in their places of work and in their lifestyles,” Mrs Devlin concluded.

The rest of the battle is visible in the background and the whole scene has a sense of immediacy to it.

It implies that the artillery is kept mighty busy, bombarding the enemy - a sign of an aggressive and virile offensive against the enemy, but without the implication of defeat or loss of life.
