The Parish Church of Saint John the Baptist is a historical landmark of Cananéia, known for being one of the oldest churches in Brazil, built in 1570 and which once functioned as a defensive fort.
The church is an important cultural and historical heritage of the city. Visitors often notice the interesting details of the original construction, such as the windows designed for defense against invaders, which reveal its dual function as a place of worship and a military fort.
The construction of the Parish Church of Saint John the Baptist, in Cananéia, is fascinating for mixing faith and military defense.
Here are the most striking construction details:
"Armored" Walls: The walls are extremely thick, made of a mixture of stones, shell lime and whale oil. Whale oil was used to waterproof the structure against sea air and humidity.
Church-Fort: The building was designed to serve as a refuge against attacks by pirates and invaders. Therefore, it originally had no side windows, only small slits called arrow slits.
Combat Loopholes: These vertical slits in the walls allowed defenders to position muskets and firearms to fire at invaders without exposing themselves.
Massive Gates: The entrance has enormous and heavy gates, reinforced to withstand invasion attempts.
Colonial Simplicity: Unlike the baroque churches of Minas Gerais, the interior is known for its extreme simplicity and lack of ostentation, maintaining the Portuguese colonial style of the time.

Un grazie speciale alla mia modella preferita...
Times so bad that even angels would wish to crouch and hide, others would prefer death to endless suffering, others again might wish to have never been born in the first place. So many men with guns pulling the religious traditions through the dirt. So much hypocrisy in the 'defence' of democracy; such a corrupted language defining the 'other'; so much violence masquerading as justified reactions. So little preparedness to step into the other's shoes. I could go on. However, when angels are helpless, and when violence is going to create even more violence, the foetal position is the wrong choice. We got to stand up and walk. A macro view of the root of a white onion. The frame represents a span of 1¾ - inches across.
Strobist info:
The scene was illuminated by two Nikon SB900 speedlights positioned at 3- and 9-o'clock, one-foot above and two-feet away from the subject. They were fired in Manual mode @ ¼ power through Neewer 24" x 24" soft boxes.
The SB900s were triggered by three PocketWizard Plus X flash triggers.

This kestrel was perched on the corner of the gutter around our rental when we arrived. Not particularly interested in me fortunately so I was able to get a few shots in before it flew off.
Native to Australia and New Guinea, one of the smallest falcons. Like kestrels elsewhere it does not rely on speed to catch its prey. Instead, it simply perches in an exposed position, but it also has a distinctive technique of hovering over crops and grasslands.

A Flickr friend commented that Olivia has amazingly graceful hands. As an accomplished dancer her hands act to convey emotion. When interviewing her for the modeling position, we discussed how dancers and photographic models both attempt to do the same thing.
Seeing this large increase the impact. Thank you.

The village of Charlestown in the townland of DERRYINVER is named from Charles Brownlow, a landlord who built roughly twenty houses here c.1830. The alias name BANNFOOT refers to the position of the village at the point where the Upper Bann enters Lough Neagh and where a ferry used to cross the river

My positioning for this shot, as you may have guessed from the title, was somewhat precarious. My tripod and I were perched on top of this MASSIVE, slick boulder resting along Raven Fork in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. This amazing striated cascade was huge; each of the boulders you see in this shot are approximately car-sized or larger. The wide angle lens just doesn't always do justice towards capturing the immensity of objects when they are further out from the camera. Beneath me is the tumultuous water, and to my left (and down about 10 feet) is a very deep pool. I'm all for searching out the best position for the tripod and composition for the photo, but here the options were mostly limited by my location - thankfully my only option was a decent one, in my opinion! Recent rain made all these boulders very slick, also. Definitely an interesting position to be in!
Raven Fork is a large creek/stream/river that begins near Tricorner Knob on the AT and eventually flows down through the town of Cherokee, NC. Upstream from this location is backcountry site #47, while further downstream Enloe Creek enters Raven Fork and the two carve their way through a section known as 'The Gorges'. I'm trying to plan a trip exploring off-trail in this area for some not often seen shots. Backcountry site #47 is one of my favorites, if not my favorite, in the whole park. There are massive cascades/falls all through the river in the area. A brutal hike is required to get in. If you leave from Straight Fork Road, you have about 3 miles (not that long) but about 1800' up then another 1000' down. If you leave from Smokemont, it's about 8 or 9 miles including a steep climb up the Chasteen Creek Trail and down the Enloe Creek Trail. It's worth the effort though!

I'm just jealous really! If I'd got into that position, one of two things would happen.
a. I'd fall over and make a complete arse of myself!
b. I'd still be there, also making an arse of myself, and slightly damp!
This track is one of my favourites and from the album 'An Awesome Wave'.
Glancing through my gallery you might think that we have an abundance of insect life in our surroundings. Nothing could be further from the truth and I struggle to find much at all day to day, especially at the moment during our anticyclonic gloom. One species that does seem to have done OK is the mother of pearl moth - patania ruralis. As I go around the garden watering with the hose, I inevitably disturb one or two moths and this one flew out yesterday and secreted itself amongst the Japanese azalea leaves. Usually these moths in flight travel fast and disappear before I can pinpoint their position. But I managed to spot this one's hiding place and got a snap or two, even with our dark, grey skies overhead. These mother of pearl moths have emerged from a clump of nettles which we grew in a container pot. Quite often they have flapped back into the nettles which have kindly stung me as I strive for a snap or two. This time however, there were no such hazards.

Sailing across the deep blue sea,
feeling the breeze that blows so free,
the sun beaming down,
feels so calming enriching to me.
Sailing through life,
with gentlest of ease,
feeling happy and contented,
with a smile to please.
Sailing through our emotions,
through the ups and downs,
coping with the tragedy's,
that sometimes slows us down.
Sailing through relationships,
some good, some bad, some the worst you,ve ever had,
makes us stronger and wiser,
some regrets we may have had.
Sailing on the wings of an angel,
protected and so free,
knowing that someone up there is always watching over me.
Sailing, sailing, sailing,
has so many meanings to me,
other than sailing on the deep blue sea.

There wasn't much colour in this image to start with so it was crying out for a high key edit imo.
I think its turned out okay but let me know what you think in the comments! Btw that bloody swan took ages to get into the position i wanted.
