Not a particularly good shot, but one that shows the regular position of the Metropolitan Scanias in Bradford. Hardly a trip in to Bradford went by without seeing one of these at the side of the road.

Stern frame being manoeuvred into position on ‘Nicola’, the first SD14 to be built by Austin & Pickersgill, 13 November 1967 (TWAM ref. DT.TUR/2/51828A).
This set celebrates the ‘Nicola’, the first in a long line of standard ships designed by the Sunderland shipyard of Austin & Pickersgill Ltd. The images document her construction from October 1967 through to her completion in February 1968. The shipbuilders commissioned the Newcastle-based firm Turners (Photography) Ltd to take weekly progress shots of the ‘Nicola’ and these images have given us a unique view of her development.
She was the first SD14 to be completed (the name stands for ‘Shelter Deck 14,000 tons deadweight’) and was designed as a replacement for the surviving ‘Liberty ships’, built by American yards during the Second World War. Those Liberty ships had played a vital role in the Allied victory but by the 1960s they were fast approaching the end of their working lives.
The SD14 developed by Austin & Pickersgill met the demand for economic and reliable cargo ships. The simplicity of the design meant that it could be marketed by the shipbuilders at a very competitive price. It’s success is reflected by the fact that over the course of 20 years 211 ships were built to the SD14 design by Austin Pickersgill and its licensees. Sunderland can be very proud of its remarkable shipbuilding and engineering history and the SD14 is one the City’s finest achievements.

With their focus turning to a visit to Chicago after a 26-15 loss to the Carolina Panthers on Monday Night Football (MNF), the Washington Redskins know full well they need to get back on track and hope for the best. They need the Green Bay Packers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers to slip to have any chance of making the postseason.
"We put ourselves in this position, so we can't sit here and feel sorry for ourselves," left tackle Trent Williams said. "Obviously, we're not in the driver's seat anymore and we're going to need some help, but that all doesn't matter if we don't take care of our business."
A 2-of-12 showing on third down, two turnovers and a running game coach Jay Gruden deemed "atrocious" cost the Redskins control of their playoff destiny. Games remain at the Bears and home against the New York Giants.
"I hate being in this position where you got to wait for teams to win, this team needs to lose," defensive end Ricky Jean Francois said. "I hate being in that position because (Monday night) we could have controlled our own destiny now we need help from another team and I hate being in that position but we put ourselves in that hole and now we have to dig ourselves out."
Some other things we learned from the Panthers' victory over the Redskins:
Jonathan Stewart ripped through the Redskins for a career-high 132 yards rushing on 25 carries. It was a performance the Panthers had been waiting for all season, and it came with the veteran at less than 100 percent.
"Stew was just typical Stew," quarterback Cam Newton said. "He did an unbelievable job this week. He came in and wasn't in his best health. He had some kind of contusion in his leg. The trainers did an unbelievable job of getting him back on the field.
"For him to perform like that, that's the type of play we're going to need from him moving forward. He's a professional. That type of run game kind of sets the tone."
Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins had one of his worst games of the season, going 32 of 47 for 315 yards with an interception and a fumble.
"I thought he had good time to throw it for the most part," Gruden said. "I think he was having trouble seeing some of the coverage and when he did see them I don't know if he just didn't have clear throws at them."
The Panthers know their odds of making the postseason are, well, hardly ideal.
"Without a doubt, it's minuscule," coach Ron Rivera said, "but it can happen."
At this point, the best Carolina can do is finish at .500 and see if that's good enough.
"Our objective is to go undefeated all the way to the end of the season," defensive end Wes Horton said. "Playoffs aside, we are playing for pride."
While Carolina's defense looked almost vintage Super Bowl caliber, former Panthers cornerback Josh Norman wanted some more action. Mostly he didn't like Newton not throwing at him.
"He threw that long ball to Teddy (Ginn Jr. and) he came down with it," Norman said. "After that I didn't see any more of him all night. I think (offensive coordinator Mike) Shula got in his ear. I wish he didn't because I'm pretty sure he would have uncontained the beast."

Netball Round 7 2010
22/05/2010 Filed in: Netball | 2010
A Grade
First met last in round 7 of the 2010 CHNL. Hepburn sitting on top of the ladder faced a determined bottom of the ladder Gordon. With Kristina Closhey still out injured, the Burras felt prepared with their squad to take the court. Taking first centre pass, Hepburn took one single pass into goals from the Wing Attack where Gordon’s defenders turned the ball over and scored the first goal to take the lead. This seemed to stun the Burra’s for a few minutes as they quickly tried to settle into their game.
Hepburn’s experience in defence settled first and the game started to flow along at the pace the Burras were working too. Jane and Libby in goals shooting at 95% in the first quarter had Hepburn holding a 14 to 3 lead. A very determined Gordon started the second in fine form once again rattling Hepburn’s game plans at the start. Hannah Cameron-Taylor who was injured in warm up came on court at Goal Defence in the second half and helped drive the ball through the centre in attack. Jane Lienhop at Goal Shooter with the help of Libby Purtell at Goal Attack, managed to out move her defender and offer herself time and time again to miss only 2 of her 27 goals in the last half. Hepburn’s coach praised Gordon for their tenacious game.
Final Scores: HEPBURN 56 defeated GORDON 11
Goals: Jane – 85% 41/48, Libby – 78% 18/23
The Mo Shepherd award went to Captain Libby Purtell for outstanding work in attack.
B Grade
200th gamer Kristi Pedretti saw her undefeated team into round 7. Hepburn’s reserves were well prepared after a week of solid training. Focussing only on their game plan, the Burras shot to the lead in minutes. Hepburn’s strong mid court from Wing Defence to Wing Attack quickly dominated their opponents and took control of the ball. Outstanding attacking support in goals by Tania Grant at Goal Attack helped sharp shooter Mel Penny take them to a 17 to 4 lead at the first break.
Only one change bringing Courtney Wetzel on as Goal Keeper in the second and Hepburn continued to control the ball. Janee Brown’s speed in Centre backed up with Naomi Uwland at Wing Attack consistently rattled Gordon’s mid court defence. Supported by Mel Brown in Goal Defence and the quick hands of Caitlan Ryan at Wing Defence, Hepburn’s attacking line up became sharper and more direct.
Tania Grant stepped up again and offered herself more. With more options for the centre court feeding, the Burra’s goalers were relentless with their offers and attempts. The game continued at a fast pace with Hepburn refusing to slow down. Calm and controlled, the teams confidence grew through the match. An outstanding 2 quarters at Goal Keeper for Coutrney Wetzel kept her opponent scoreless.
Final scores HEPBURN 62 defeated GORDON 11
Goals: Mel Penny – 72% 44/61, Tania Grant – 57% 17/29, Courteny Wetzel – 25% 1/4
The Cutting Studio Award went to Janee Brown and Mo Shepherd award to Tania Grant for outstanding work in attack.
Tania and Janee would like to thank their supporters, Red Bull.
C Grade
Hepburn’s C grade had an outstanding win in round 7. Lead by Cam Nolan in Centre, the Burras managed to quickly settle into the game and take control. 16 year old Ange Giacometti at Goal Attack was brilliant again. Her height, attacking speed and accuracy in goals leaves her opponents behind. Shooting 22 to 0 in the 1st backed up by Lisa Elleton at Goal Shooter.
After a solid training this week, Hepburn were confident with their abilities. They rotated the bench and achieved results ever time. Alyson, Desi, Maddy & Tash also controlled the defence and prevented Gordon from scoring for most of the game. Hepburn had their best result for the season with a strong 67 to 6 victory.
Mo Shepherd award went to Cam Nolan for outstanding work in attack and defence.

7 January 2014. Lloyd from Shades Catering Services using a pole to show the location of a blocked drain gully in one of three large puddles in Morrison Yard, Tottenham.
To locate the other two gullies Alex Pang and I used a large twig. But this was the largest puddle and the water was too cloudy to see the gully. Sharon and Lloyd came out to help.

§ From time to time, elected councillors need to look round for a handy wooden stick or dead branch to use as a temporary marker for a blocked drain gully.
I try to exclusively use file folders that are right-justified tabbed only.
Inspired by a small comment discussion on a emdot blog post about my Getting Things Done fetish, er, I mean, focus. I was telling Bean and KB how I only use right-sided file folders and only one file folder per hanging file.
Sometimes I run out of right-hand tabs and have to use middle or left. Don't think that doesn't hurt me inside. :)
You can also see where a couple of tabs are hand labeled. Here's my trick. Well, first of all, I LOVE MY LABEL MAKER. And secondly, when I don't use a label maker, I use this trick: I label with a post-it note, sticky side at the top. That way, if it is just for something that needs to be temporarily kept, I can easily reuse the folder without having to rip off a label.
I'm a Virgo, by the way.
I know this makes me look like a nerd. Wait. Maybe a better way to word that would be, I know I'm a nerd. :) But this week I am embracing my nerdlieness. :)
Strobist Lighting 102 1.2: Position/Distance
Camera settings were kept constant: f5, 1/200 sec, ISO200.
Flash: LumoPro160 at camera right, approx 120 degrees.
Subject was 1.2m (4 feet) away from the background.
Top image: Flash at 1/2 power, approx 3m from subject.
Middle: Flash at 1/8 power, approx 1.5m away.
Bottom: Flash at 1/32 power, approx 0.5m away.
Was amazed at how the background got so dark with the bottom image. I'm getting more amazed at the creative control Strobist lighting gives you.
I've decided to better myself in the realm of off camera lighting by enrolling myself in the Strobist Lighting 102 course. (It's basically a set of instructions and assignments that have been created by David Hobby that help to teach the basics of off camera lighting). Find them at strobist.blogspot.com/2007/06/lighting-102-introduction.html
This is the first assignment: Position- Angle.
Strobist: Single SB-80DX on a stand, moved from camera left to camera right at about 30 degree angles. 1/8 power, bare.
Shelly on keyboards for Randy King and the New Positions. She wasn't in my last Positions shot.

Graves in the Blackall Cemetery date back to the late 1880 and included are the gravesites of legendary shearer Jack Howe and local heroes Roy Dunne and Annie (Granny) Harlow.
Jack Howe set two shearing records at Alice Downs, Blackall in 1892, his record for blade shears of 321 sheep shorn in 7 hours 40 minutes has never been broken. Roy Dunne set a world record when astride his goat Nugget when they leapt over a 3-foot 6-inch jump in 1905.
Whilst Annie (Granny) Harlow was Blackall’s midwife for many years and is a registered Unsung Hero at the Australian Stockman’s Hall of Fame and Outback Heritage Centre in Longreach.
Blackall, Queensland:
Blackall is in central-western Queensland, between Longreach and Charleville and 500km south-west of Rockhampton. It was named after Samuel Blackall, soldier and Governor of Queensland (1868 - 1871). Blackall was the administrative centre of the shire of the same name, and continues that function with the Blackall and Tambo Regional Council (2008).
Blackall is situated on the Barcoo River, in an area explored by Thomas Mitchell in 1846 and Augustus Gregory in 1858 and thus known by the 1860s to be both favourable to grazing and desolate in drought. Pastoral settlement was active in the 1860s, and a rudimentary village settlement evident by 1867. Local government was established in 1879 with the Kargoolnah division, headquartered in Blackall. By 1877 the town had upwards of seven hotels, seven stores, several tradespeople, and a school (opened that year). The town's newspaper, the Barcoo Independent, began publication in 1889. During the 1880s some of the large pastoral runs were subdivided for selection for grazing and dairying. There was a run of fairly good seasons, and the drilling of Queensland's first artesian bore at Blackall in 1885 brought relief to thirsty stock. At the end of the 1890s the 'federation drought' took hold, followed by flooding of the Barcoo in 1906. Nevertheless, provision against the vagaries of the surface water supply was made by the sinking of further bores and construction of tanks.
By 1903 the town's population had passed 750.
One of Blackall's most famous events is recorded as the mighty Jack Howe, who hand shore 321 sheep in seven hours and forty minutes on the 10th of October 1892 at the Alice Downs pastoral station, 19km north of Blackall. The world record stands, and was not broken by machine shearing for 58 years. A Howe sculpture was unveiled in Blackall's business centre in 1988. Howe's remains are buried and marked at the local Blackall Cemetery.
Within a year of the formation of the Kargoolnah division Blackall was established as a separate municipal borough. There were periods of uneasy stand-off and cooperation between the two authorities, mainly over shire contributions to town amenities in the event of amalgamation, which nevertheless occurred with the formation of Blackall Shire in 1945.
Postwar Years:
Blackall was bypassed by the Longreach railway (1886) until a branch from Jericho was opened in 1908. The branch line came just two years after Blackall opened a large wool scouring works, a sign of confidence in a stable wool producing region. Running from about 1900 until 1978, the scouring works are now a significant industrial heritage site, listed on the Queensland Heritage Register. Town amenities were gradually increased: sealed roads, reticulated electricity, and plans for a new town hall. Sewerage, a fire brigade, a public park, and a swimming pool came after World War II, as did the new town hall.
The postwar wool boom and a succession of good seasons positioned Blackall for strong growth. A State high school opened in 1957, a motel in 1962, the main street saw a building boom. Population peaked, but drought came in 1965, followed by the wool price collapse in 1967. The town's population dwindled by a third between 1961 and 2001, and the shire's nearly halved; the non-town population went from 1100 (1961) to 370 (2001).
Blackall has a showground, racecourse, golf course, bowling club, and aquatic centre. There are four churches, five hotels, and two motels, partly a testament to Blackall's position on the Landsborough Highway tourist route to Longreach. In times past, the road was 'beyond the black stump', a reference to the black stump survey marker in Blackall used for survey purposes in the 1880s. Blackall also has a hospital, a Catholic primary school (1917), the State primary and high schools, a cultural centre and an historical association. A two-storey, verandahed tin and timber Masonic temple (1908) is listed on the Queensland Heritage Register. The local Barcoo Independent is published fortnightly. To the town's east lies 'Black's Palace', a significant complex of Aboriginal drawings and artefacts. The Seymour Department Store closed in 2012 after trading in the town for more than fifty years.
In 1993 Blackall Shire had 67 000 beef cattle, 458 000 sheep and 159 000 lambs.
The town's history was celebrated in a number of ways in the twenty-first century. A bronze statue to Blackall's Edgar Towner who won the Victoria Cross in 1918 for bravery in a battle in France was unveiled in 2009. A community group, the Blackall Historical Society, completed the mapping and electronic register of over 2000 graves, some dating back to the 1880s, in the Blackall cemetery in 2011. A new racing pavillion (2013) at the Blackall Racecourse was named in honour of local jockey and trainer Charlie Prow. The Queensland Governor unveiled an Engineering Heritage National Marker at the Blackall Woolscour tourist facility in 2014.
Regularly subject to debilitating droughts, a handful of homes in the town were flooded in 2012 when the Barcoo River flooded.

An abandoned Hayes railroad bumping post (bumper) in the Third Ward neighborhood in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. At one time, the Chicago and North Western served this industrial spur. This is now a Glorioso's food warehouse at 521 East Corcoran Street, between Jefferson and Jackson. Up until about 10 or 15 years ago, Union Pacific still served a few last customers in the Third Ward, but the swing bridge to access the Third Ward is now locked in a permanent open position and the approach track has been torn up, so freight trains will likely never roll through the Third Ward again (though The Hop streetcar now serves the north end of the 3rd Ward).
