Portland Park is known locally as the Quarries, being the site of a former magnesian limestone quarry.

It was donated to the people of Kirkby by the 6th Duke of Portland in a series of gifts from 1910.

Tucked away on a quiet hill in Portland, the Portland Japanese Garden is incredibly well-crafted with trees, bushes, and water all carefully placed to create a peaceful park in which to walk through.

Roosevelt High School Clean Up

In the summer of 2008, Portland churches along with the Palau Association began to think about how they might multiply their impact in their city. The realization came quickly that more could be accomplished together than apart.

These leaders decided to try something new; bringing the church, civic and corporate communities together to serve the region as never before. Several Christian leaders visited with the Portland Mayor and simply asked, “What do you need,” and, “how can we help?” Out of that meeting, the Season of Service was born. By the end of the summer more than 27,000 volunteers from hundreds of churches served the city in different emphasis areas shaped by the initial meeting with civic leadership: Hunger/Poverty, Homelessness, Education/Schools, Neighborhood Revitalization, Health and Wellness, and Human Trafficking.

Portland Head Light is a historic lighthouse in Cape Elizabeth, Maine. The light station sits on a head of land at the entrance of the primary shipping channel into Portland Harbor, which is within Casco Bay in the Gulf of Maine. Completed in 1791, it is the oldest lighthouse in Maine. The light station is automated, and the tower, beacon, and foghorn are maintained by the United States Coast Guard, while the former lighthouse keepers' house is a maritime museum within Fort Williams Park.

Construction began in 1787 at the directive of George Washington, and was completed on January 10, 1791, using a fund of $1,500, established by him. Whale oil lamps were originally used for illumination. In 1855, following formation of the Lighthouse Board, a fourth-order Fresnel lens was installed; that lens was replaced by a second-order Fresnel lens, which was replaced later by an aerobeacon in 1958. That lens was updated with a DCB-224 aerobeacon in 1991. The DCB-224 aerobeacon was replaced in the spring of 2021 with a VRB-25 lens.
