This 1966 Austin Healey Mark3 brought back memories of the 1960 Healey 3000 I owned in 1963, these where a really awesome handling sportscar with power. The rest of the pictures in the comment section are just random shots showing some of the accessories on the cars.

I saw him in the parking lot of the Tim Hortons coffee shop in Port Perry, Ontario. His bright scarf and beard called out to me. He was with another couple of motorcyclists and they were chatting next to their motorcycles. As I walked up to introduce myself I instantly experienced a friendly reception and he was glad to be part of my Human Family photo project. Meet Randy.

As willing as Randy was, the open setting of the parking lot proved a bit of a challenge photographically and I tried a couple of different angles in order to emphasize Randy and the motorcycle. His wife Chris stood by and seemed to be enjoying her husband being the center of attention. So did their friend Wayne. Randy was outgoing and quick to dispel any stereotypes that motorcyclists are anything but friendly. “Here’s a tip, Jeff – the bigger they are, usually they are more shy. Never hesitate to walk up to motorcyclists and introduce yourself. You’re pretty much guaranteed a warm reception.” I was pleased I had stopped to say hello and ask for a photo and we continued to chat in the parking lot.

Randy is 59 and retired. He has done truck driving and construction. He and his wife Chris live in Fenelon Falls and were out on a day ride with their friend Wayne with a goal of stopping in at the motorcycle cruise night at a local restaurant which hosts these events on Thursday evenings. This is a second marriage for Randy and Chis; they each had two daughters. There was pride in his face as he told me they have two additional adopted children and ten grandchildren.

Randy struck me as a very happy-go-lucky fellow with a good heart. I asked about challenges he has faced in life and his reply was “That hasn’t happened yet. There’s been nothing I couldn’t handle.” I asked about advice to his younger self and his reply was “I wouldn’t change a darned thing.” His message to the project: “Don’t worry so much and just enjoy all that you have. Life is to be enjoyed.”

Randy met Wayne (seen in the comment photo, walking away) while they were both in rehab following knee replacements. They have been riding friends ever since even though they live in different towns. We had a fun chat and Randy, a natural storyteller, explained that he carved himself a walking stick after his knee surgery. “I didn’t like the way it turned out so I gave it away and did another. It took more than a dozen before I got one I liked… and by then I didn’t need it anymore!” When I asked what happened to all the others, he said “Oh, I just gave them away to anyone that wanted one.”

When I asked what the best thing is about motorcycling, he didn’t hesitate before saying “The people. Motorcyclists are just great folks and it’s a great community. Hey, how often do you meet friendly people driving your car? Motorcyclists always stop to meet one another and talk.”

My wife and I saw the cruise gathering outside Haugen’s restaurant on the edge of town as we were heading home later in the afternoon. We stopped to admire the motorcycles and there was Randy with Chris and Wayne, chatting with some other motorcyclists. Randy gave a big friendly wave and gestured us to come over. “Are you stalking me?” he asked with a hearty laugh. He and Chris were happy to draw our attention to a couple of other remarkable motorcycles, notably a Polaris three-wheeled cycle which looked like a space ship. Randy’s Honda Goldwing is a 1995 20th anniversary edition and it’s his pride and joy. As we chatted in the parking lot we heard more of the Randy and Chris story. They have been together for 20 years but just tied the knot three years ago. He was waiting for a certain Friday the 13th in 2013 which is a fabled set of numbers in the motorcycle community.

More of Randy’s philosophy of life: “I got a lot of teasing as a kid and it bothered me. My father taught me to let it roll off my back. He said if kids are teasing you, at least they notice you and it makes you one of the crowd.” He said this advice served him well in life. I asked to photograph his sticker-decorated helmet and heard the story. “When I got this motorcycle, Chris said I shouldn’t put any stickers on it. So I put them all on my helmet.” We had a good laugh.

It was time for us to return to Toronto and Randy said they were going to be leaving soon themselves. “There’s a lot of wildlife between here and Fenelon Falls and I don’t like taking chances on encountering any of it on the highway after dark.” The warm handshakes all around were evidence that this spontaneous encounter was enjoyed by all. I thanked Wayne for “loaning” me his buddy for the photo shoot. He said “No problem. Anytime. Hey, we’re retired and available.” Randy couldn’t help chiming in and showing me his favorite retirement activity. It was a photo on his tablet of bare feet wiggling in front of a crackling fireplace. He laughed and said “This is what life is all about.”

Thank you Randy for taking the time for these friendly chats and for participating in my photo project. It was a real pleasure. Safe riding.
