This is the largest, most widely distributed, and perhaps most colourful small pennant species in the region. Its common name is descriptive because of its distinctive orange and brown or black wings. Males have a red stigma on their wing tips.
Took a drive to Port Perry to pick up my Mom who will be up visiting for a few weeks from Newfoundland.
A secretive bird of freshwater marshes, the Virginia Rail most often remains hidden in dense vegetation. It possesses many adaptations for moving through its habitat, including a laterally compressed body, long toes, and flexible vertebrae. The Virginia Rail and other rail species have the highest ratio of leg muscles to flight muscles of any birds.
This bird was seen at Nonquon Lagoons in Port Perry, Ontario, Canada.
The Virginia rail probe with its bill in mud or shallow water, also picking up food by sight. It mainly eats insects and other aquatic invertebrates, like beetles, flies, dragonflies, crayfish, snails and earthworms. It can also eat aquatic animals like frogs, fish and some small snakes, as well as seeds. Animal prey constitutes the biggest part of this bird's diet, but vegetation contributes to its diet in the fall and winter.
In winter, a Spotted Sandpiper's breast is not spotted; it's plain white, while the back is greyish brown and the bill is pale yellow. In flight, Spotted Sandpipers have a thin white stripe along the wing.
The White Admiral (Limenitis arthemis arthemis) is also known as the Red-spotted Admiral. There are two forms which are considered the same species, but are very different visually.

During our Flickr meet up we a attempted to shoot a lightning storm, but it started to pour and so we ran off to another a location just to catch the sun setting. In my haste to get the shot off, I forgot to clean the lens from the remains of the rain. This really played havoc on the sunset.

Ontario Patio Season is open, only 4 months late, Port Perry is doing a good job of the social distancing.
I met up with flickr friend Roddy_Gilly in Whitby to explore Whitby, Oshawa and Ajax.
This is the second time Rod and I met. A huge thank-you to him for driving me and showing me around all afternoon!
Whitby is about 56 km or 35 miles east of Toronto. I took the commuter train to Whitby.
Now I cannot remember where this is... we stopped outside of someone's rural home as this is one of the highest point in the entire province and looks out to a very wide landscape (photo of which will be posted later).
Thanks to Rod, now I know this is about 1366 Coates Road West (west of Stevenson Road North), Port Perry, Ontario
