A cast polyester bangle, cut from a white tube, turned and polished, dyed in boiling pigment, then carved in a brutalist, primitive manner. Made in Brazil in the 1980s.
I have taken these photos in order to use them for 3D modeling. I like mapping images onto surfaces, and putting decals onto them. These photos are raw JPEGs which haven't undergone any treatment at all - no reduction, no re-sizing, no auto contrast or auto levels or anything. Please feel free to grab anything you like and use it for your projects. Some may require cropping and sharpening, colour calibration, etc., but you surely know all that. Best of luck with your projects.

In het Huis van de Vlaamse Volksvertegenwoordigers vind je nog ouderwetse paternosterliften. Daarin hebben hele generaties postchequepersoneel zich vlot op en neer verplaatst doorheen tien boven- en ondergrondse verdiepingen, maar aan de huidige Europese veiligheidsnormen beantwoorden de liften niet. Anderzijds heeft de Brusselse overheid ze als waardevol industrieel patrimonium geklasseerd. Toen het Vlaams Parlement dit kantoorgebouw van de Post overnam, kon het bijgevolg de liften niet in gebruik nemen, maar evenmin uit het gebouw verwijderen. Gelukkig leenden ze zich uitstekend voor een kunstproject.
Nog altijd schrikken bezoekers als ze in de oude liften plots mensen opmerken. Kunstenaar Guillaume Bijl beheerst immers tot in de puntjes de kunst om de kijker te misleiden. Hij voorzag twintig van de veertig liftkooien van hyperrealistische personen. Dankzij hun passende kledij en natuurlijke houding zijn deze figuren gemakkelijk met echte mensen te verwarren. Speciaal voor het kunstwerk liet het parlement de stokoude liftmechaniek restaureren, zodat Bijls personages in een voortdurende ellips langs alle verdiepingen van het gebouw blijven circuleren.
In het werk van de Antwerpenaar Guillaume Bijl is de ironische knipoog nooit ver te zoeken. Zijn installaties zijn op zich perfect geloofwaardig, maar verplaatst naar een locatie waar je ze niet zou verwachten. Hij wil de decors van zijn tijd tonen. Zo richtte hij een galerij als viswinkel in en een andere als autorijschool. In 2008 organiseerde hij in het SMAK een jaarbeurs met een hele resem stands voor koopwaar en diensten, zoals badkamertoebehoren, bejaardenfauteuils en zelfs een huwelijksbureau. Zijn favoriete onderwerp zijn de pseudo-attracties: zo authentiek mogelijk in scène gezette culturele of toeristische trekpleisters. Bijvoorbeeld een stemhokjesmuseum of een oermensenmuseum. Een luchtige manier om kritisch stil te staan bij de manier waarop we alles en nog wat tot attractie verheffen.
Nog dunner wordt de scheiding tussen kunst en werkelijkheid als Bijl de werken niet in een galerij maar in een ‘reële’ omgeving presenteert. Naast de hoger vernoemde transformatie-installaties ontwerpt Bijl ook situatie-installaties: door in een realistische ruimte een fictieve ingreep uit te voeren ontstaat een vervreemdingseffect. Daarvan vormt het liftintegratieproject in het Vlaams Parlement een perfect voorbeeld.
De paternosterliften ademen een sfeer van monumentenzorg, die nog wordt geaccentueerd door de plakbordjes met het opschrift: ‘2 personen’. Zo wordt hun retrokarakter nauwgezet in ere hersteld. Qua sfeer sluiten ze aan bij de schilderijen van Edward Hopper. De figuren zelf vormen zowat een doorsnee van wat zich in het Huis van de Vlaamse Volksvertegenwoordigers zou kunnen bevinden: fictieve politici en ambtenaren, maar ook een werkman in overall en zelfs een kind met een voetbal. In Guillaume Bijls ironische universum gaat het om een kind dat zijn ouders van het werk komt afhalen.

All it took was some polyester, a gold chain, a fan, a 'me' attitude, and not manscaping for a month or so... 70s Disco Lounge Man was born.
Even with the polyester bricks that has not aged like CA, it near impossible to build something. And thats for an adult!

I bought this from Polyester Books in Melbourne, one of the coolest book stores ever and apparently the 'freakiest bookstore in the world'. They have a book on almost everything cool and underground, from retro vintage porn and erotica, the occult and paganism, to graffiti, stencilling and street art. If you're in Melbourne, don't miss it.
I wore this hand-made, polyester dress in August and nearly died when I went out of doors. Note to self: old-school polyester is best suited to temps under 75 degrees and low humidity. Today was ideal for vintage poly.
