On the way to a Cincinnati Reds baseball game in August 2013, we made several brief stops on the way into town at various parks. This was an orange flower that I spotted outside the Nature Center of California Woods Nature Preserve. Unfortunately the Nature Center was closed.

Here's what I copied and pasted from the Cincinnati Parks website about the location and also a link.

With its 113 acres of forest, California Woods Nature Preserve offers something for all nature lovers. The park features 53 species of trees, more than 200 species of herbaceous plants, and Lick Run Creek, home to kingfishers, snapping turtles, small fish, myriad invertebrates and the occasional visit from grebes, mallards, wood ducks and beavers.

California Woods Nature Center offers year-round educational programs, and California Woods also contains miles of hiking trails. It is adjacent to the Magrish Preserve, a designated Important Birding Area.

At least, that's what I think it is.

Yes, I know. These aren't the typical snow banks, but they are snow banks nonetheless.

Once I awoke to snow on Monday, I knew I had to take a walk somewhere to get some shots of the first real snowfall of the year. I didn't linger long because by the time I around to the creek, my face felt like it was frozen.

I hope there is more snow to be photographed this winter.

I didn't find this flower in my Ohio Wildflowers book by Stan Tekiela, but I did find it listed on the website below and believe I have the ID correct as Colt's foot.

Wanting to catch some of the early spring wildflowers, we made a trip over to Highlands Nature Sanctuary in April 2013 near Bainbridge, Ohio. This series of photos was taken along the Valley of the Ancients trail.

I had planned to take the majority of these photos with my Canon 10D and 100mm f 2.8 lens, but I failed to take an extra battery along. The battery was very low when I arrived and didn't last long. So, some of these were taken with my Fujifilm FinePix Z20fd pocket camera, which I try to take everywhere I go so I am never without a camera.

Descriptions and a link below if interested ...

The Highlands Nature Sanctuary is 2,200-acre hiking and nature preserve in southern Ohio, located in the heart of the scenic Rocky Fork Gorge.

Valley of the Ancients Trail - A rock-lined trail curves down to the Rocky Fork Creek, winding through the bottom of a 100 foot high vertical dolomite gorge. Walk beneath towering hemlocks and rare white cedar trees of great antiquity, viewing the art of breathtaking panoramas sculpted from the elements of rock and water. 1/4 mile loop.

We've been told by the sommelier at one of our favorite shops that this winery is now gone. Finito, Kaput, the End. So Sad.

I am so proud of her!

At my cousin's house for a late summer visit, I noticed this giant spider hanging out on one of the steps to her garden area. So, of course, I had to take advantage of the photographic opportunity.

The light was much better, and this spider was much more cooperative than the one I had to remove from my workplace with a margarine container (posted prior to this series in my photstream). Once again, I believe this was a wolf spider.

Bring Spring In!

Thank you to all of the very kind people here on flickr that have visited and left encouraging comments...You make my day!

I know they talked about Google Books and that he really likes cheesecurds.

Have you ever looked closely at the buds on a Maple tree?

If you haven't, here is your chance.

These are crazy looking. It is hard to believe that these become leaves.

This was taken in February 2012 on a cold winter walk.

This shot is from my archives from Blendon Woods Metropark in June of 2013, taken inside the "Monarch Mansion."

The Monarch butterflies were enjoying the sky view and soaking up some sunshine from a screened opening at the top of their summer home.

Here's a bit of text and link from Bob and Deb Platt from their TrekOhio website talking about Blendon Woods ...

It explains the following about the Monarch Mansion: "From June through September there is a screened in gazebo just outside the nature center that’s known as Monarch Mansion. The staff raises monarch caterpillars until they become butterflies. The butterflies live in this mansion until they are released on Monarch Day celebrated annually."

This may have been my first time to photograph a "Star Magnolia". It certainly attracted my attention on this spring day in 2013. It was spotted at Long's Retreat Resort outside the camp store during a drive through the southern Ohio countryside.

This is an archive shot that was recently processed.

I've included a Wikipedia link about the Star Magnolia if anyone is interested in reading further.

I've posted two different versions of the same sign at Myrtle Beach State Park - one from my Apple iPhone 4 and one from my Fujifilm XP200. I had walked one of the nature trails out toward the beach. I was in search of nature along the road when I spotted the sign.
