Since the natural phenomenon of volcanic plugs (as in the photos), was first explained to me, I have been fascinated by the process, & with the elapsed time / causation of erosion, over millennia.
Plugs are formed when molten magma solidifies in the neck of an active volcano. Over time, the agents of erosion; wind, rain and scouring, wears the softer surrounding sediments of the volcanic cone away, leaving the hard plug.
Frequently, the spoils of the erosion can be seen cascading downwards, like buttresses on a church.
The time it takes to erode say, a centimetre, from the top of hardened rock? Fascinating.
Then there is the unanswerable question: How tall was it in the first place? Ditto 'normal' mountains.
