I actually ended up using this for my homework for tomorrow. It's not perfect, but I thought the letters looked kinda 3D. And they're about the same size, wich was pretty difficult! The "hearts" on the top there didn't turn out so good, but it's better than most of the other ones. :P

I've been inspired by these refraction pattens a few times before.
So I noticed this one made by a wine glass half full with madeira wine and while moving the paper under the glass noticed that if you use the paper as a back projected surface you got a totally different but still very cool effect - see the next few pics in the stream.
The legend of the Lost Dutchman's Gold Mine centers around the Superstition Mountains. According to the legend, a German immigrant named Jacob Waltz discovered a mother lode in the Superstition Wilderness and revealed its location on his deathbed in 1891 to Julia Thomas, a woman who had taken care of him for many years. Several mines have been claimed to be the actual mine that Waltz discovered, but none of those claims have been verified.
Some Apaches believe that the hole leading down into the lower world is located in the Superstition Mountains. Winds blowing from the hole are supposed to be the cause of severe dust storms.
The Peralta Stones were discovered near the Superstition Wilderness and appear to contain a cryptic treasure map, although their authenticity is doubted by many researchers.
Modern visitors are urged to remain on established trails when hiking the Superstitions. Since the mid-1800s, well over 100 people have died among the craggy peaks. Some of those deaths were murders associated with the fabled Lost Dutchman Mine, but others were due to falls from its breathtaking — and dangerously steep — precipices. The high death toll prompted Arizona state officials in 1983 to outlaw any serious mining efforts in the Superstition range.
The rugged terrain, considered by many to be the roughest on Earth, is so extreme that NASA used it to train astronauts in the early days of space travel.

Refraction pattern from wine glass. The macro setting on my camera (Canon A520) can't quite cope with focusing in the low light and manual focus doesn't seem to do much better. Needs some more experimenting...
I was out just before the end of mid summers day but didn't get this shot in till after midnight, anyway the ring spinner welcomes the start of summer!
I never saw it coming. When I used to go see a band I could count on several things. It would be loud, it would be hot, I would have to stand the entire show, I would have beer splattered all over me, and my ears would ring for several days afterwards.
Times have changed. Now I have a comfortable seat, I sip on a nice cabernet, my favorite artist performs with a full symphony, and I can hear after the show. I am willing to bet that Elvis Costello would not have forseen this either in 1977.

PLaying with the O-Flash (ring flash that attaches to your normal flash)... Can't say I really like it.. but the effect is pretty cool
