Based upon the planner that I created for myself in 2010, the pages of this 2011 planner are bound to the spines of old books. The pages are the same design as our Droplet planner.
The head, with a speculation about what might be going on inside it.
Background; contemporary town planning in Stockport
Stockport Council is currently spending £900m on projects to improve the town . A substantial proportion of this funding is to support a series of highways engineering infrastructure projects, including the Town Centre Access Plan and the A6 to Manchester Airport Relief Road. Why is this?
The Council claims that these highway projects will “generate economic growth... promote job creation and the regeneration of local communities” . This was exactly the claim made by Stockport’s Director of Development and Town Planning in the early ‘80’s, looking forward to the new motorway through the town centre. “As the arrival of the M63 brought investment, so will this (M62). The town’s accessibility will be increased, and its catchment area widened. Stockport is indeed set to become one of the ‘boom towns’ of the 80’s and 90’s.” Well, figures for Percentage Breadline Poor or below in Stockport are as follows: 1980 = 27.0%, 1990 = 36.3%, 2000 = 37.8% .
The Council claims that these highway projects will “reduce traffic congestion” . Current evidence suggests road widening merely leads to increased traffic flow and further congestion . The access plan statements about “improving the flow of traffic around the town centre” etc, are wholly misleading, as the proposals will not improve flow but rather increase quantity.
The Council claims that these highway projects will “support lower carbon travel” , also that the current condition “contributes to air pollution” and by implication this will be remedied. This is a particularly misleading claim; the opposite is true – increasing capacity will increase car usage and therefore pollution.
The Council claims that “a full and inclusive consultation has been undertaken” . This consultation has been conducted on the basis of millimetre-designed final drawings; for the general public an arcane and barely readable technical document designed to outwit any proper response. Rather than consultation in the sense of an exchange or discussion, the document is a statement of intent.
Council policy is therefore either misguided or misleading, or both.
At the same time the same council expresses angst about how to make comparatively minor cuts to other budgets . Funds exist; perhaps they just need to be redirected. And what is the end game? 51% of the surface area within this ring road is now devoted to highways . This compares with 29% in York and 24.5% in Lincoln, places where we might feel more comfortable walking around . Our highway engineer’s next project is probably to connect the Airport Relief Road with the M60 at Brinnington, through the presently beautiful Goyt Valley, as marked on the borough plan . At what % coverage in tarmac will Stockport refocus its planning priorities from cars to people?
Painting
My painting is a commentary on this situation . It is made of “authentic” materials. The plain white canvas represents the tabula rasa created firstly by sweeping away the existing urban/landscape context. I had thought about a representation of landscape for this layer, but on reflection the very idea of a “blank canvas” is somehow more appropriate.
On this is drawn using a technical drafting pencil with engineering blue lead, firstly a Cartesian grid representing the carving-up or acquisition of landscape, and secondly the plan of Stockport’s road system.
To this latter is applied black bitumen tar, the blacktop area corresponding to land used for or sterilised by highways, a mapping process undertaken previously with technical rigour. The shape is that of the town centre plan within a central ring road defined by Tiviot Way, St Mary’s Way, Shaw Heath, King Street West, Wood Street, George’s Road and Belmont Way. Clearly visible are the M60, Merseyway and on a cross axis the A6. It is painted with an old brush; the broad brush of top-down desk-based planning.
The top layer is a series of directional arrows in white road paint, gooey and difficult to apply, but ethically correct. If the ring road appears one-way, this is because it is drawn to its centreline. The arrows are a nod to Louis Kahn’s drawings for Philadelphia , and perhaps direction and flow arrows are all the traffic planner sees?
I have resisted the temptation to cover the whole thing with a final coat of whitewash to represent the consultation process.
Anthropomorphism
Black and white; the end result is at first sight a curious perversion of a figure ground or Nolli plan, in which the highway takes the place of building form. It is also oddly anthropomorphic, and I like to call this character THE STOCKPORT PLANNER. This invites the picture to be considered simultaneously as landscape, abstract and portrait.

Pour Papa.
When my parents were here on vacation, my papa bought me a card (the one I'm reading in the shot). He didn't give it to me directly, but rather hid it under my day planner. It would have gone totally un-noticed by me would it not have been for Billy saying "uh. I think your dad hid something on your desk..."
I found it. and inside was a beautiful little booklet.
On the front, he wrote "P.S. In case I forgot!"
Did I tell you?
By Elizabeth Knapp
a message to a daughter
Now that you are almost grown I look back and ask myself:
Did I tell you?
Did I tell you all that I meant to tell you, all that I felt was important? Did I tell you or was it lost in the shuffle of our everyday lives, the busy full days when we taught and didn't know it. What did we teach? Was it STrong? Was it Good? Will it root you in something real that will allow you to grow with a frim and sound foundation?
Did I tell you...
Did I tell you to love? not with a fair-weather love, but with a love that accepts and cherishes unconditionally. Love not with a quick and passing love, but with a love that is a quiet peace within your heart.
Did I tell you to be thoughtful? Not to be a martyr or a doormat to be trod upon, but to be aware of other people and their needs. To meet others with awareness and within your own framework, be able to meet them halfway and, on occasion, go the other half joyfully.
Did I tell you to be courteous? Not to display empty manners with no meaning, but to live the courtesy born of caring. And to express this caring through the small formalities and customs born of the years.
Did I tell you to be bold? To be not afraid of the unknown, but to live life to the fullest and meet each new experience with joy and anticipation.
And did I tell you to be cautious? To temper your daring and sense of adventure with good judgment and consideration.
Did I tell you to serve other people if only in a small way? There is growth and satisfaction in being part of something larger than yourself and your life will be richer for knowing this.
Did I tell you to maintain a sense of the past? To recall and uphold all that is best and meaningful in our country and in our society. But never be afraid to speak out where you don’t believe or where there is room for improvement. Work for what you believe, but work in a positive way within a structure of order and reason.
Did I tell you to find a part of nature that speaks to you? Then know it intimately and well. For some it is a mountain peak, for some a windswept beach. Find your own and in it find your restoration.
Did I tell you to laugh, to dance, to sing? There is a lot in life that is hard, but take it as it comes and find the good... And make time to dance.
Did I tell you to be creative? To explore the seed within you. Find your creative spirit and let it grow.
And did I tell you the joy and challenge of being a woman. The joy of having a child, knowing and sharing a new life. The joy of making a home... the center, but not the limit for the lives of those you love. The joy of exploring a third dimension – a world of your own, discovering and fulfilling your own capabilities.
Did I tell you these things as we went along the way? If I did, I am humbly grateful. If I did not, then you must choose for yourself. If it has meaning, accept it and make it your own. If it does not, discard it. Your life is yours to build as you choose. And did I tell you…
I hope it will be a good life.
he signed it, Dady! XOX

i'm all teary eyed again reading it over.
Love you Papa!

Picked up a couple of portable "sketchbooks" on clearance at Borders: A Moleskine Daily planner (borrowing the idea from Manuela Hoffmann's photostream) and a German Paperchase multicolor blank journal. I'd recommend pairing them with a fine set of Faber Castell Pitt pigment liners that will not bleed through even with the thinner daily planner paper. Blog entry

It is attractive for different couples to marry away from home for different reasons. The phrase 'Destination Weddings' is a thrill for everyone. But planning and executing it is a very difficult task. The best thing about a destination wedding ceremony is that both families get more and more time to spend together. Also, only near and dear ones gather to enjoy the union. So, to manage it beautifully and well, we have an experienced team of wedding planners to manage everything and every facility starting from selecting the venue to curating the essentials for the wedding.
My entry to Moda Bake Shop Sliced Contest (Auditions).
This version of my week planner is designed for two family members (each member has its own row) - half of charm pack is needed to make it (for colorful parts) plus fabric for white sashing, fabrics for back and binding.
In version for four family members one charm pack is needed (for colorful parts) plus fabric for white sashing, fabrics for backing and binding.
It can be also used at the office.
Corners of each square are pockets to put there cards with plan for each day of the week or another information. These corners were made from 1/4 of charms and they are sewn between the rows.
Buckle is used to indicate day of the week. When the day changes, buckle is moved to another.
Depending on weight of the buckle (mine is quite heavy) buttons for secure the strip are needed.
Machine quilted (cotton batting was used) and machine bound.
